Non-Standard Models, Solar Neutrinos, and Large θ_{13}

Solar neutrino experiments have yet to see directly the transition region between matter-enhanced and vacuum oscillations. The transition region is particularly sensitive to models of non-standard neutrino interactions and propagation. We examine several such non-standard models, which predict a lower-energy transition region and a flatter survival probability for the ^{8}B solar neutrinos than the standard large-mixing angle (LMA) model. We find that while some of the non-standard models provide a better fit to the solar neutrino data set, the large measured value of θ_{13} and the size of the experimental uncertainties lead to a low statistical significance for these fits. We have also examined whether simple changes to the solar density profile can lead to a flatter ^{8}B survival probability than the LMA prediction, but find that this is not the case for reasonable changes. We conclude that the data in this critical region is still too poor to determine whether any of these models, or LMA, is the best description of the data.

Characterization of the Hamamatsu R11780 12 inch Photomultiplier Tube

Future large water Cherenkov and scintillator detectors have been proposed for measurements of long baseline neutrino oscillations, proton decay, supernova and solar neutrinos. To ensure cost-effectiveness and optimize scientific reach, one of the critical requirements for such detectors are large-area, high performance photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). One candidate for such a device is the Hamamatsu R11780, a 12" PMT that is available in both standard and high quantum efficiency versions. Measurements of the single photoelectron response characteristics, relative efficiencies of the standard and high quantum efficiency versions, a preliminary measurement of the absolute quantum efficiency of the standard quantum efficiency version, and a two-dimensional scan of the relative efficiency across the photocathode surface are presented in this paper. All single photoelectron investigations were made using a Cherenkov light source at room temperature at a gain of 1*10^7. These results show that the R11780 PMT is a excellent candidate for such large optical detectors, including the peak-to-valley ratios greater than 2, transit time spreads around 1.3 ns, and late-pulsing probabilities less than 5%.

Combined Analysis of all Three Phases of Solar Neutrino Data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

We report results from a combined analysis of solar neutrino data from all phases of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. By exploiting particle identification information obtained from the proportional counters installed during the third phase, this analysis improved background rejection in that phase of the experiment. The combined analysis resulted in a total flux of active neutrino flavors from 8B decays in the Sun of (5.25 \pm 0.16(stat.)+0.11-0.13(syst.))\times10^6 cm^{-2}s^{-1}. A two-flavor neutrino oscillation analysis yielded \Deltam^2_{21} = (5.6^{+1.9}_{-1.4})\times10^{-5} eV^2 and tan^2θ_{12}= 0.427^{+0.033}_{-0.029}. A three-flavor neutrino oscillation analysis combining this result with results of all other solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment yielded \Deltam^2_{21} = (7.41^{+0.21}_{-0.19})\times10^{-5} eV^2, tan^2θ_{12} = 0.446^{+0.030}_{-0.029}, and sin^2θ_{13} = (2.5^{+1.8}_{-1.5})\times10^{-2}. This implied an upper bound of sin^2θ_{13} < 0.053 at the 95% confidence level (C.L.).

Measurement of the $ν_e$ and Total $^{8}$B Solar Neutrino Fluxes with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Phase-III Data Set

This paper details the solar neutrino analysis of the 385.17-day Phase-III data set acquired by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). An array of $^3$He proportional counters was installed in the heavy-water target to measure precisely the rate of neutrino-deuteron neutral-current interactions. This technique to determine the total active $^8$B solar neutrino flux was largely independent of the methods employed in previous phases. The total flux of active neutrinos was measured to be $5.54^{+0.33}_{-0.31}(stat.)^{+0.36}_{-0.34}(syst.)\times 10^{6}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, consistent with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino mixing parameters yielded the best-fit values of $Δm^2 = 7.59^{+0.19}_{-0.21}\times 10^{-5}{eV}^2$ and $θ= 34.4^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ degrees.

Using Cold Atoms to Measure Neutrino Mass

We propose a beta decay experiment based on a sample of ultracold atomic tritium. These initial conditions enable detection of the helium ion in coincidence with the beta. We construct a two-dimensional fit incorporating both the shape of the beta-spectrum and the direct reconstruction of the neutrino mass peak. We present simulation results of the feasible limits on the neutrino mass achievable in this new type of tritium beta-decay experiment.

The calibration of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory using uniformly distributed radioactive sources

The production and analysis of distributed sources of 24Na and 222Rn in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) are described. These unique sources provided accurate calibrations of the response to neutrons, produced through photodisintegration of the deuterons in the heavy water target, and to low energy betas and gammas. The application of these sources in determining the neutron detection efficiency and response of the 3He proportional counter array, and the characteristics of background Cherenkov light from trace amounts of natural radioactivity is described.

Megaton Modular Multi-Purpose Neutrino Detector for a Program of Physics in the Homestake DUSEL

This is a preliminary version of a formal proposal by the 3M collaboration to construct a megaton, modular, multipurpose (3M) neutrino detector for a program of experiments in neutrino physics. The detector components will be located in chambers approximately 7000 ft below the Earth's surface in the Homestake Mine at Lead, South Dakota, to carry out experiments on neutrino oscillations directed toward the principal experimental goal of the program, viz., the issue of CP-invariance violation in the lepton sector of elementary particles, an issue that has been the subject of study in the quark sector for several decades. The principal physics goal of this program also requires a moderately intense neutrino beam from an accelerator located a long distance from the detector array, such as the 2540 km distance of BNL from Homestake. The construction plan for that neutrino beam is at http://nwg.phy.bnl.gov/. Other experimental searches that do not require the accelerator-generated beam can be carried out with the 3M detector independently of and at the same time as the neutrino oscillation and CP-invariance violation measurements are in progress. They are searches for Proton Decay, UHE Neutrinos, and Supernovae Neutrinos.

Very Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment for Precise Measurements of Mixing Parameters and CP Violating Effects

We analyze the prospects of a feasible, Brookhaven National Laboratory based, very long baseline (BVLB) neutrino oscillation experiment consisting of a conventional horn produced low energy wide band beam and a detector of 500 kT fiducial mass with modest requirements on event recognition and resolution. Such an experiment is intended primarily to determine CP violating effects in the neutrino sector for 3-generation mixing. We analyze the sensitivity of such an experiment. We conclude that this experiment will allow determination of the CP phase $δ_{CP}$ and the currently unknown mixing parameter $θ_{13}$, if $\sin ^2 2 θ_{13} \geq 0.01$, a value $\sim 15$ times lower than the present experimental upper limit. In addition to $θ_{13}$ and $δ_{CP}$, the experiment has great potential for precise measurements of most other parameters in the neutrino mixing matrix including $Δm^2_{32}$, $\sin^2 2θ_{23}$, $Δm^2_{21}\times \sin 2 θ_{12}$, and the mass ordering of neutrinos through the observation of the matter effect in the $ν_μ\to ν_e$ appearance channel.
