Perturbative generation of photon Lorentz violating terms from a pseudo-tensor Lorentz-breaking extension of QED

We consider an extended QED with the addition of a dimension-five Lorentz-breaking coupling between spinor and gauge fields, involving a pseudo-tensor $κ^{μνλρ}$. The specific form of the Lorentz violating coupling considered by us have been suggested in other works, and some of its consequences at the classical level were already studied. Here, we investigate the consequences of this specific form of Lorentz violation at the quantum level, evaluating the one loop corrections to the gauge field two-point function, both at zero and at finite temperature. We relate the terms that are generated by quantum corrections with the photon sector of the Standard Model Extension, discussing the possibility of establishing experimental bounds on $k^{μνρσ}$. From the dispersion relations in the resulting theory, we discuss its consistency from the causality viewpoint.

Lorentz symmetry breaking -- classical and quantum aspects

In this book, we review various aspects of the Lorentz symmetry breaking, both classical and quantum ones, with the special interest to perturbative generation of Lorentz-breaking terms. We present impacts of Lorentz symmetry breaking in noncommutative and supersymmetric theories. Also, we discuss the problem of Lorentz symmetry breaking in a curved space-time. The book is closed with a review of experimental studies of Lorentz symmetry breaking.

Lorentz symmetry breaking and supersymmetry

We discuss three manners to implement Lorentz symmetry breaking in a superfield theory formulated within the superfield formalism, that is, deformation of the supersymmetry algebra, introducing of an extra superfield whose components can depend on Lorentz-violating (LV) vectors (tensors), and adding of new terms proportional to LV vectors (tensors) to the superfield action. We illustrate these methodologies with examples of quantum calculations.

Spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking and one-loop effective action in the metric-affine bumblebee gravity

The metric-affine bumblebee model in the presence of fermionic matter minimally coupled to the connection is studied. We show that the model admits an Einstein frame representation in which the matter sector is described by a non-minimal Dirac action without any analogy in the literature. Such non-minimal terms involve unconventional couplings between the bumblebee and the fermion field. We then rewrite the quadratic fermion action in the Einstein frame in the basis of 16 Dirac matrices in order to identify the coefficients for Lorentz/CPT violation in all orders of the non-minimal coupling $ξ$. The exact result for the fermionic determinant in the Einstein frame, including all orders in $ξ$, is also provided. We demonstrate that the axial contributions are at least of second order in the perturbative expansion of $ξ$. Furthermore, we compute the one-loop effective potential within the weak field approximation.

Induced gravitational topological term and the Einstein-Cartan modified theory

It is well known that only the axial piece of the torsion couples minimally to fermions in a Riemann-Cartan geometry, while the other ones decouple. In this paper, we consider the Dirac field minimally coupled to a dynamical background with torsion and compute its contribution to the fermionic one-loop effective action. Such a contribution owns topological nature since it can be linked with topological invariants from Riemann-Cartan spaces, like Nieh-Yan and Chern-Simons terms. Furthermore, we propose a novel modified theory of gravity constructed by adding the aforementioned one-loop contribution to the Einstein-Cartan action. The modified field equations reduce to those ones of GR under certain circumstances, providing therefore trivial solutions. However, in particular, we find a non-trivial solution where the modified field equations do not reduce to the GR ones.

Radiative corrections in metric-affine bumblebee model

We consider the metric-affine formulation of bumblebee gravity, derive the field equations, and show that the connection can be written as Levi-Civita of a disformally related metric in which the bumblebee field determines the disformal part. As a consequence, the bumblebee field gets coupled to all the other matter fields present in the theory, potentially leading to nontrivial phenomenological effects. To explore this issue we compute the weak-field limit and study the resulting effective theory. In this scenario, we couple scalar and spinorial matter to the effective metric which, besides the zeroth-order Minkowskian contribution, also has the vector field contributions of the bumblebee, and show that it is renormalizable at one-loop level. From our analysis it also follows that the non-metricity of this theory is determined by the gradient of the bumblebee field, and that it can acquire a vacuum expectation value due to the contribution of the bumblebee field.

First-order perturbations of Gödel-type metrics in non-dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity

Gödel-type metrics that are homogeneous in both space and time remain, like the Schwarzschild metric, consistent within Chern-Simons modified gravity; this is true in both the non-dynamical and dynamical frameworks, each of which involves an additional pseudoscalar field coupled to the Pontryagin density. In this paper, we consider stationary first-order perturbations to these metrics in the non-dynamical framework. Under certain assumptions we find analytical solutions to the perturbed field equations. The solutions of the first-order field equations break the translational and cylindrical symmetries of the unperturbed metrics. The effective potential controlling planar geodesic orbits is also affected by the perturbation parameter, which changes the equilibrium radii for the orbits of both massive particles and massless photons.

On perturbative aspects of a nonminimal Lorentz-violating QED with CPT-odd dimension-5 terms

We consider the Lorentz-violating extended QED involving all nonminimal dimension-5 additive CPT-odd terms. For this theory, we investigate the possibility of generating the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term of the first order in any of these nonminimal couplings. This term is demonstrated to vanish in certain regularization schemes. We also study the question of higher-derivative divergent contributions and demonstrate that they can be eliminated by considering a given proportionality between the coefficients.

On the causality properties in non-local gravity theories

It is well known that non-local theories of gravity have been a flourish arena of studies for many reasons, for instance, the UV incompleteness of General Relativity (GR). In this paper we check the consistency of ST-homogeneous Gödel-type metrics within the non-local gravity framework. The non-local models considered here are ghost-free but not necessarily renormalizable since we focus on the classical solutions of the field equations. Furthermore, the non-locality is displayed in the action through transcendental entire functions of the d'Alembert operator $\Box$ that are mathematically represented by a power series of the $\Box$-operator. We find two exactly solutions for the field equations correspondent to the degenerate ($ω=0$) and hyperbolic ($m^{2}=4ω^2$) classes of ST-homogeneous Gödel-type metrics.

On plane wave solutions in Lorentz-violating extensions of gravity

In this paper, we obtain dispersion relations corresponding to plane wave solutions in various Lorentz-breaking extensions of gravity with dimensions 3, 4, 5 and 6. We demonstrate that these dispersion relations display an usual Lorentz-invariant mode when the corresponding additive term involves higher derivatives.

Strong gravitational lensing in a spacetime with topological charge within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity

In this work we calculate the angular deflection of light in the strong field limit in two spacetimes which were previously studied within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI), namely, a black hole and a wormhole, both with topological charge. We show that the presence of the parameters characterizing EiBI and the topological charge promote significant changes in the angular deflection of light with respect to that one obtained in Schwarzschild spacetime. Using the expression for angular deflection in the strong field limit, we calculate the position and magnification of the respective relativistic images.

Gödel-type Solutions in Cubic Galileon Gravity

We address the homogeneous in space and time (ST-homogeneous) Gödel-type metrics within the cubic galileon theory, a particular class of generalized galileon theories. We check the consistency of such spacetimes for a physically well-motivated matter content, namely, a perfect fluid and an electromagnetic field. In this scenario, we find that the admissible solutions impose constraints on the constant couplings ($c_{i}$'s) of the cubic galileon theory to ensure the consistency. Also, we show the existence of a vacuum completely causal solution.

Gravitational lensing in a black-bounce traversable wormhole spacetime

In this work, we calculate the deflection angle of light in a spacetime that interpolates between regular black holes and traversable wormholes, depending on the free parameter of the metric. Afterwards, this angular deflection is substituted into the lens equations which allows to obtain physically measurable results, such as the position of the relativistic images and the magnifications.

Higher-order one-loop renormalization in the spinor sector of minimal LV extended QED

We calculate contributions to the one-loop renormalization in the spinor sector of the minimal Lorentz-violating extended QED in the second order in Lorentz-breaking parameters. From the renormalizability viewpoint, we show that the inclusion of some of the Lorentz-breaking terms in the model is linked to the presence of others. We also demonstrate that the Ward identities are satisfied up to this order.
