Correlations in Electrically Coupled Chaotic Lasers

We show how two electrically coupled semiconductor lasers having optical feedback can present simultaneous anti-phase correlated fast power fluctuations, and strong in-phase synchronized spikes of chaotic power drops. This quite counter intuitive phenomenon is demonstrated experimentally and confirmed by numerical solutions of a deterministic dynamical system of rate equations. The occurrence of negative and positive cross correlation between parts of a complex system according to time scales, as proved in our simple arrangement, is relevant for the understanding and characterization of collective properties in complex networks.

Time Delays in the Synchronization of Chaotic Coupled Systems with Feedback

The synchronized excitable behavior of two coupled chaotic diode lasers with feedback was experimental and numerically studied. We determine the relation between the observed delay times in synchronized Low Frequency Fluctuation spikes and the coupling and the feedback times in the lasers.

Detecting of photons in optical fields of complicated spatial structure

We show that a photon detector, sensitive to the gradients of electromagnetic fields, or to magnetic fields, should be a useful tool to characterize the quantum properties of spatially-dependent optical fields. We discuss the excitation of an atom on a magnetic dipole or electric quadrupole transitions with the spiral photons of a Laguerre-Gauss (LG) or Bessel beams. We show that these beams are not true hollow beams, due to the presence of magnetic fields and gradients of electric fields on beam axis. This approach paves the way to an analysis at the quantum level of the spatial structure and angular momentum properties of singular light beams.

Detection of Spiral photons in Quantum Optics

We show that a new type of photon detector, sensitive to the gradients of electromagnetic fields, should be a useful tool to characterize the quantum properties of spatially-dependent optical fields. As a simple detector of such a kind, we propose using magnetic dipole or electric quadrupole transitions in atoms or molecules and apply it to the detection of spiral photons in Laguerre-Gauss (LG) beams. We show that LG beams are not true hollow beams, due to the presence of magnetic fields and gradients of electric fields on beam axis. This approach paves the way to an analysis at the quantum level of the spatial structure and angular momentum properties of singular light beams.

Exponential Recovery of Low Frequency Fluctuations in a Diode Laser with Optical Feedback

We show that the recovery after each power drop on the chaotic Low Frequency Fluctuations in a semiconductor laser with optical feedback follows an exponential envelope. The time constant for such exponential behavior was experimentally measured. This recovery time constant and the average time interval between consecutive drops are shown to have different dependences when measured as function of the pump current.

Logarithmic periodicities in the bifurcations of type-I intermittent chaos

The critical relations for statistical properties on saddle-node bifurcations are shown to display undulating fine structure, in addition to their known smooth dependence on the control parameter. A piecewise linear map with the type-I intermittency is studied and a log-periodic dependence is numerically obtained for the average time between laminar events, the Lyapunov exponent and attractor moments. The origin of the oscillations is built in the natural probabilistic measure of the map and can be traced back to the existence of logarithmically distributed discrete values of the control parameter giving Markov partition. Reinjection and noise effect dependences are discussed and indications are given on how the oscillations are potentially applicable to complement predictions made with the usual critical exponents, taken from data in critical phenomena.

Averages and Critical Exponents in Type-III Intermittent Chaos

The natural measure in a map with type-III intermittent chaos is used to define critical exponents for the average of a variable from a dynamical system near bifurcation. Numerical experiments were done with maps and verify the analytical predictions. Physical experiments to test the usefulness of such exponents to characterize the nonlinearity at bifurcations were done in a driven electronic circuit with diode as nonlinear element. Two critical exponents were measured: $ν= 0.55$ for the critical exponent of the average of the voltage across the diode and $β= 0.62$ for the exponent of the average length of the laminar phases. Both values are consistent with the predictions of a type-III intermittency of cubic nonlinearity. The averages of variables in intermittent chaotic systems is a technique complementary to the measurements of laminar phase histograms, to identify the nonlinear mechanisms. The averages exponents may have a broad application in ultrafast chaotic phenomena.

Bifurcations and Averages in the Homoclinic Chaos of a Laser with a Saturable Absorber

The dynamical bifurcations of a laser with a saturable absorber were calculated, with the 3-2 level model, as function of the gain parameter. The average power of the laser is shown to have specific behavior at bifurcations. The succession of periodic-chaotic windows, known to occur in the homoclinic chaos, was studied numerically. A critical exponent of 1/2 is found on the tangent bifurcations from chaotic into periodic pulsations.
