The Local Group Census: searching for PNe in IC 1613, WLM and GR8

In the framework of the Local Group Census (LGC), a survey of the Local Group (LG) galaxies above Dec=$-30^\circ$, which is aimed at surveying their populations with strong emission lines, we have searched for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the low-metallicity dwarf irregular galaxies IC1613, WLM, GR8. Two new candidate PNe have been found in IC1613, one in WLM and none in GR8. The observations presented in this paper, together with the previous results from the LGC, represent the first step in the study of the PN population in low-metallicity, dwarf irregular galaxies of the Local Group. They will be followed by deep spectroscopy to confirm their nature and to study their physical-chemical properties. We used the observed number of PNe in each LG galaxy to estimate a lower limit to the mass of the intermediate-age population which was compared to the Star Formation Rate (SFR) of LG dwarf galaxies. These results are in agreement with those from accurate star formation history (SFH) analysis for these small galaxy systems.

Stars in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

We identified 46 unresolved source candidates in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, down to i775 = 29.5. Unresolved objects were identified using a parameter S, which measures the deviation from the curve-of-growth of a point source. Extensive testing of this parameter was carried out, including the effects of decreasing signal-to-noise and of the apparent motions of stars, which demonstrated that stars brighter than i775 = 27.0 could be robustly identified. Low resolution grism spectra of the 28 objects brighter than i775 = 27.0 identify 18 M and later stellar type dwarfs, 2 candidate L-dwarfs, 2 QSOs, and 4 white dwarfs. Using the observed population of dwarfs with spectral type M4 or later, we derive a Galactic disk scale height of 400 \pm 100 pc for M and L stars. The local white dwarf density is computed to be as high as (1.1 \pm 0.3) x10^(-2) stars/pc^3. Based on observations taken 73 days apart, we determined that no object in the field has a proper motion larger than 0.027"/year (3 sigma detection limit). No high velocity white dwarfs were identified in the HUDF, and all four candidates appear more likely to be part of the Galactic thick disk. The lack of detected halo white dwarfs implies that, if the dark matter halo is 12 Gyr old, white dwarfs account for less than 10% of the dark matter halo mass.

Extracting clean supernova spectra

We use a new technique to extract the spectrum of a supernova from that of the contaminating background of its host galaxy, and apply it to the specific case of high-redshift Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) spectroscopy. The algorithm is based on a two-channel iterative technique employing the Richardson-Lucy restoration method and is implemented in the IRAF code 'specinholucy'. We run the code both on simulated (SN Ia at z=0.5 embedded in a bright host galaxy) and observed (SNe Ia at various phases up to z=0.236) data taken with VLT+FORS1 and show the advantages of using such a deconvolution technique in comparison with less elaborate methods. This paper is motivated by the need for optimal supernova spectroscopic data reduction in order to make meaningful comparisons between the low and high-redshift SN Ia samples. This may reveal subtle evolutionary and systematic effects that could depend on redshift and bias the cosmological results derived from comparisons of local and high-z SNe Ia in recent years. We describe the various aspects of the extraction in some detail as guidelines for the first-time user and present an optimal observing strategy for successful implementation of this method in future high-z SN Ia spectroscopic follow-up programmes.

Discovery of a Solitaire Dwarf Galaxy in the APPLES Survey

During the APPLES parallel campaign, the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys has resolved a distant stellar system, which appears to be an isolated dwarf galaxy. It is characterized by a circularly symmetric distribution of stars with an integrated magnitude m(F775W) = 20.13 +- 0.02, a central surface brightness of ~ 21.33 +- 0.18 mag/arcsec^2 and a half-light radius of ~ 1.8 arcsec. The ACS and VLT spectra show no evidence of ionized gas and appear dominated by a 3 Gyr old stellar population. The OB spectral type derived for two resolved stars in the grism data and the systemic radial velocity of ~ 670 km/s measured from the VLT data give a fiducial distance of ~ 9 +- 2 Mpc. These findings, with the support of the spatial morphology, would classify the system among the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. Following the IAU rules, we have named this newly discovered galaxy APPLES 1. An intriguing peculiarity of APPLES 1 is that the properties (age and metallicity) of the stellar content so far detected are similar to those of dSph galaxies in the Local Group, where star formation is thought to be driven by galaxy interactions and mergers. Yet, APPLES 1 seems not to be associated with a major group or cluster of galaxies. Therefore, APPLES 1 could be the first example of a field dSph galaxy with self-sustained and regulated star formation and, therefore, would make an interesting test case for studies of the formation and evolution of unperturbed dSph galaxies.

Angular diameters, fluxes and extinction of compact planetary nebulae: further evidence for steeper extinction towards the Bulge

We present values for angular diameter, flux and extinction for 70 Galactic planetary nebulae observed using narrow band filters. Angular diameters are derived using constant emissivity shell and photoionization line emission models. The mean of the results from these two models are presented as our best estimate. Contour plots of 36 fully resolved objects are included and the low intensity contours often reveal an elliptical structure that is not always apparent from FWHM measurements. Flux densities are determined, and for both H-alpha and O[III] there is little evidence of any systematic differences between observed and catalogued values. Observed H-alpha extinction values are determined using observed H-alpha and catalogued radio fluxes. H-alpha extinction values are also derived from catalogued H-alpha and H-beta flux values by means of an Rv dependent extinction law. Rv is then calculated in terms of observed extinction values and catalogued H-alpha and H-beta flux values. Comparing observed and catalogue extinction values for a subset of Bulge objects, observed values tend to be lower than catalogue values calculated with Rv = 3.1. For the same subset we calculate = 2.0, confirming that toward the Bulge interstellar extinction is steeper than Rv = 3.1. For the inner Galaxy a relation with the higher supernova rate is suggested, and that the low-density warm ionized medium is the site of the anomalous extinction. Lowvalues of extinction are also derived using dust models with a turnover radius of 0.08 microns.

GRAPES, Grism Spectroscopy of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field: Description and Data Reduction

We present deep unbiased spectroscopy of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) carried out using the slitless grism spectroscopy mode of the Advance Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The GRIsm ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) achieves continuum detection as faint as $z_{AB}=27.2$ using 40 orbits ($9.2 \times 10^4$ seconds) on HST. The data were taken at four orientation angles to correct for the overlap of spectra. GRAPES data provide a unique, uninterrupted, low resolution (R=100) spectral coverage for $5500Å< λ< 10500Å$, and allow us to detect high redshift galaxies at $4 < z < 7$ whether they have $\lya$ lines or just show the Lyman Break, as well as find low luminosity AGNs in an unbiased fashion. This paper describes in detail the observations and the data reduction, and examines the quality of the extracted spectra. Subsequent papers will deal with the analysis of the data. The extracted and calibrated GRAPES spectra will be available from MAST at STScI.

The Local Group Census: planetary nebulae in IC 10, Leo A and Sextans A

In the framework of our narrow-band survey of the Local Group galaxies, we present the results of the search for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf irregular galaxies IC10, LeoA and SextansA. Using the standard on-band/off-band technique, sixteen new candidate PNe have been discovered in the closest starburst galaxy, IC10. The optical size of this galaxy is estimated to be much larger than previously thought, considering the location of the new PNe in an area of 3.6 kpc X 2.7 kpc. We also confirm the results of previous studies for the other two dwarf irregular galaxies, with the detection of one candidate PN in LeoA and another one in SextansA. We review the number of planetary nebulae discovered in the Local Group to date and their behaviour with metallicity. We suggest a possible fall in the observed number of PNe when [Fe/H]$<<$-1.0, which might indicate that below this point the formation rate of PNe is much lower than for stellar populations of near Solar abundances. We also find non-negligible metallicity effects on the [OIII] luminosity of the brightest PN of a galaxy.

Iterative techniques for the decomposition of long-slit spectra

Two iterative techniques are described for decomposing a long-slit spectrum into the individual spectra of the point sources along the slit and the spectrum of the underlying background. One technique imposes the strong constraint that the spectrum of the background is spatially-invariant; the other relaxes this constraint. Both techniques are applicable even when there are numerous overlapping point sources superposed on a structurally-complex background. The techniques are tested on simulated as well as real long-slit data from the ground and from space.

The Wavelength Calibration of the WFC grism

We present the wavelength solution derived for the G800L grism with the Wide Field Channel from the spectra of two Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, WR 45 and WR 96. The data were acquired in-orbit during the SMOV tests and the early INTERIM calibration program. We have obtained an average dispersion of 39.2 A/pix in the first order, 20.5 A/pix in the second and -42.5 A/pix in the negative first order. We show that the wavelength solution is strongly field-dependent, with an amplitude of the variation of about 11% from the center of the WFC aperture to the corners. The direction of the field-dependence is the diagonal from the image left top corner (amplifier A) to the bottom right corner (amplifier D). These trends are observed for all grism orders. We also describe the calibration files derived from the SMOV and INTERIM data which are used by the ST-ECF slitless extraction code aXe.

High Resolution CO and H2 Molecular Line Imaging of a Cometary Globule in the Helix Nebula

We report high resolution imaging of a prominent cometary globule in the Helix nebula in the CO J=1-0 (2.6 mm) and H2 v=1-0 S(1) (2.12 micron) lines. The observations confirm that globules consist of dense condensations of molecular gas embedded in the ionized nebula. The head of the globule is seen as a peak in the CO emission with an extremely narrow line width (0.5 km/s) and is outlined by a limb-brightened surface of H2 emission facing the central star and lying within the photo-ionized halo. The emission from both molecular species extends into the tail region. The presence of this extended molecular emission provides new constraints on the structure of the tails, and on the origin and evolution of the globules.

The Local Group Census: planetary nebulae in Sextans B

Five planetary nebulae (PNe) have been discovered in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy. Emission line images were obtained using the Wide Field Camera of the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at La Palma (Spain). The candidate PNe were identified by their point-like appearance and relatively strong [OIII] emission-line fluxes. They are located within a galactocentric distance of 2.8 arcmin, corresponding to 1.1 kpc at the distance of Sextans B. Luminosities are in the range 1800--5600Lsolar. Sextans B is one of the smallest dwarf irregular galaxies with a PN population. The number of PNe detected suggest an enhanced star formation rate between 1 and 5 Gyr ago.

A radio-continuum and photoionization-model study of the two planetary nebulae in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy

Radio continuum observations at 1.4, 4.8 and 8.6 GHz of the two Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy reveal the elongated shape of Wray 16-423 and the extreme compactness of He 2-436. He 2-436 is confirmed as subject to local dust extinction. Photoionization models for both PNe are obtained from two different codes, allowing theoretical uncertainties to be assessed. Wray 16-423, excited by a star of Teff 1.07x10^5K, is an ellipsoidal, matter-bounded nebula, except for a denser sector. He 2-436, excited by a 7x10^4K star, includes two radiation-bounded shells, with the inner one possibly corresponding to a transitory event. Both stars are on the same (H-burning) evolutionary track of initial mass (1.2+/-0.1) Msun and may be twins, with the PN ejection of Wray 16-423 having occured ~1500 years before He 2-436. The PN abundances re-inforce the common origin of the parent stars, indicating almost identical depletions with respect to solar for O, Ne, Mg, S, Cl, Ar, and K (-0.55+/-0.07 dex), large identical overabundances for He and strong overabundances for carbon, particularly in He2-436. Excess nitrogen makes Wray 16-423 nearly a Type I PN. These PNe provide a means to calibrate both metallicity and age of the Sagittarius stellar population, and they confirm that the youngest, most metal-rich population has an age of 5Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.55, in agreement with the slope of the red giant branch. Third-dredge-up oxygen in planetary nebulae

The planetary nebulae He 2-436 and Wray 16-423 in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy appear to result from nearly twin stars, except that third-dredge-up carbon is more abundant in He 2-436. A thorough photoionization-model analysis implies that ratios Ne/O, S/O and Ar/O are significantly smaller in He 2-436, indicative of third-dredge-up oxygen enrichment. The enrichment of oxygen with respect to carbon is (7 +/- 4)%. Excess nitrogen in Wray 16-423 suggests third dredge-up of late CN-cycle products even in these low-mass, intermediate-metallicity stars.

Revealing deuterium Balmer lines in HII regions with VLT-UVES

The search for deuterium Balmer lines with VLT-UVES is reported in HII regions of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. The DI lines appear as faint, narrow emission features in the blue wings of the HI Balmer lines and can be distinguished from high-velocity HI emission. The previous identification to deuterium is re-inforced beyond doubt. The detection of D-alpha and D-beta in Orion (Hebrard et al. 2000) is confirmed and deuterium lines are now detected up to at least D-eta. The UVES observations provide the first detection of Balmer DI lines in four new HII regions (M 8, M 16, M 20, and DEM S 103 in SMC), demonstrating that these lines are of common occurence.

High resolution Ks polarization mapping of OH 231.8+4.2 (OH 0739-14) with SOFI

The bipolar reflection nebula OH 231.8+4.2 (OH 0739-14), centred on the Mira variable star QX Pup, has been mapped at Ks in linear polarization using the ESO SOFI near-infrared multi-mode instrument. The large scale linear polarization features agree with previous studies, validating the polarimetric mode of the instrument. However the high spatial resolution of the polarization map reveals considerable structure, some of which finds correspondence in the surface brightness images. The core is crossed by low polarization filaments; the northern lobe reveals an axial finger and a rim of very high linear polarization (upto 80%) whilst the southern lobe shows less polarization contrast. There is a trend in polarization perpendicular to the bipolar axis in both lobes. The individual linear polarization features most probably arise from localised dust structures with distinct orientations leading to differing polarization through single scattering. A single scattering geometric model, consisting of two lobes of ellipsoidal section and a central dense disk, is considered which can explain the general features of the intensity and polarization images.

High resolution near-infrared polarimetry of Eta Carinae and the Homunculus Nebula

High resolution near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and polarimetry have been obtained of the Homunculus Nebula and its central star Eta Carinae (HD 93308). Maps of the linear polarization at a resolution of <0.2'' have been made in the J, H and K bands and in a narrow 2.15micron continuum band (K_c). The overall appearance of the nebula in the near-IR is similar in all bands and to that at V, with specific features less sharp to longer wavelengths. The large-scale pattern of polarization vectors is centro-symmetric demonstrating that single scattering dominates everywhere except perhaps in the central bright core. Polarization maps at K_c in the near vicinity of Eta Carinae were restored using a PSF derived from blind deconvolution. An extension of the flux in the direction of the optically visible speckle knots was detected, with 18% polarization determined for one knot. The most remarkable result of the linear polarization mapping is the level of similarity in the spatial structure, and the degree of polarization, between the near-IR and optical data. Such a polarization pattern cannot arise in Mie scattering from a single power law distribution of grain sizes unless the particles are very small compared with the wavelength, in disagreement with mid-IR observations. The colour dependence of the extinction was found to be shallower than the typical ISM, indicating the presence of large grains. Optical depth effects and a broad distribution in grain sizes are suggested to explain these contradictory results, perhaps with a dependence of the grain size with depth into the small obscuring clouds in the Homunculus lobes. However the presence of aligned grains, previously inferred from mid-IR polarization, may also affect the dust-scattered radiation. (Abridged abstract)

Detection of deuterium Balmer lines in the Orion Nebula

The detection and first identification of the deuterium Balmer emission lines, D-alpha and D-beta, in the core of the Orion Nebula is reported. Observations were conducted at the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, using the Echelle spectrograph Gecko. These lines are very narrow and have identical 11 km/s velocity shifts with respect to H-alpha and H-beta. They are probably excited by UV continuum fluorescence from the Lyman (DI) lines and arise from the interface between the HII region and the molecular cloud.

A continuous low star formation rate in IZw 18 ?

Deep long-slit spectroscopic observations of the blue compact galaxy IZw 18 obtained with the CFH 3.6 m Telescope are presented. The very low value of oxygen abundance previously reported is confirmed and a very homogeneous abundance distribution is found (no variation larger than 0.05 dex) over the whole ionized region. We concur with Tenorio-Tagle (1996) and Devost et al. (1997) that the observed abundance level cannot result from the material ejected by the stars formed in the current burst, and propose that the observed metals were formed in a previous star formation episode. Metals ejected in the current burst of star formation remain most probably hidden in a hot phase and are undetectable using optical spectroscopy. We discuss different scenarios of star formation in IZw 18. Combining various observational facts, for instance the faint star formation rate observed in low surface brightness galaxies van Zee et al. (1997), it is proposed that a low and continuous rate of star formation occurring during quiescent phases between bursts could be a significant source of metal enrichment of the interstellar medium.
