Phoretic Motion of Spheroidal Particles Due To Self-Generated Solute Gradients

We study theoretically the phoretic motion of a spheroidal particle, which generates solute gradients in the surrounding unbounded solvent via chemical reactions active on its surface in a cap-like region centered at one of the poles of the particle. We derive, within the constraints of the mapping to classical diffusio-phoresis, an analytical expression for the phoretic velocity of such an object. This allows us to analyze in detail the dependence of the velocity on the aspect ratio of the polar and the equatorial diameters of the particle and on the fraction of the particle surface contributing to the chemical reaction. The particular cases of a sphere and of an approximation for a needle-like particle, which are the most common shapes employed in experimental realizations of such self-propelled objects, are obtained from the general solution in the limits that the aspect ratio approaches one or becomes very large, respectively.

On Effective Hamiltonians for Adiabatic Perturbations of Magnetic Schrodinger Operators

We construct almost invariant subspaces and the corresponding effective Hamiltonian for magnetic Bloch bands. We also discuss the question of the dynamics related to the effective Hamiltonian. We assume that the magnetic and electric potentials are slowly varying perturbations of the potential of a constant magnetic field and a periodic lattice potential, respectively.

Addendum to "Coherent radio pulses from GEANT generated electromagnetic showers in ice"

We reevaluate our published calculations of electromagnetic showers generated by GEANT 3.21 and the radio frequency pulses they produce in ice. We are prompted by a recent report showing that GEANT 3.21-modeled showers are sensitive to internal settings in the electron tracking subroutine. We report the shower and pulse characteristics obtained with different settings of GEANT 3.21 and with GEANT 4. The default setting of electron tracking in GEANT 3.21 we used in previous work speeds up the shower simulation at the cost of information near the end of the tracks. We find that settings tracking electron and positron to lower energy yield a more accurate calculation, a more intense shower, and proportionately stronger radio pulses at low frequencies. At high frequencies the relation between shower tracking algorithm and pulse spectrum is more complex. We obtain radial distributions of shower particles and phase distributions of pulses from 100 GeV showers that are consistent with our published results.

A proof of the Gutzwiller Semiclassical Trace Formula using Coherent States Decomposition

The Gutzwiller semiclassical trace formula links the eigenvalues of the Scrodinger operator ^H with the closed orbits of the corresponding classical mechanical system, associated with the Hamiltonian H, when the Planck constant is small ("semiclassical regime"). Gutzwiller gave a heuristic proof, using the Feynman integral representation for the propagator of ^H. Later on mathematicians gave rigorous proofs of this trace formula, under different settings, using the theory of Fourier Integral Operators and Lagrangian manifolds. Here we want to show how the use of coherent states (or gaussian beams) allows us to give a simple and direct proof.

Status of Radio Ice Cherenkov Experiment (RICE)

RICE is designed to detect ultrahigh energy (>100 TeV) neutrinos from astrophysical sources. It will consist of an array of compact radio (100 to 1000 MHz) receivers buried in ice at the South Pole. During the 1995-96 and 1996-97 austral summers, several receivers transmitters were deployed in bore holes drilled for the AMANDA project, at depths of 141 to 260 m. This was the first in situ test of radio receivers in deep ice for neutrino astronomy.
