The color dipole picture of the Drell-Yan process

At high energies, Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production viewed in the target rest frame should be interpreted as bremsstrahlung and can be expressed in terms of the same color dipole cross section as DIS. We compute DY cross sections on a nucleon target with the realistic parameterization for the dipole cross section saturated at large separations. The results are compared to experimental data and predictions for RHIC are presented. The transverse momentum distribution of the DY process is calculated and energy growth is expected to be steeper at large than at small transverse momenta. We also calculate the DY angular distribution and investigate deviations from the 1+cos^2(θ) shape.

QCD coherence effects in high energy reactions with nuclei

In this work, coherence effects in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and in the Drell-Yan (DY) process off nuclei are investigated, in particular nuclear shadowing. The target rest frame and the color dipole formulation are employed. Multiple scatterings are treated in Glauber-Gribov theory, which is modified to include the nuclear form factor to all orders. Based on the mean coherence length, which is defined in this work, it is estimated that gluon shadowing is negligible at x_{Bj}>0.01. Parameter free calculations are compared to NMC and E665 data for DIS and to E772 data for DY. In both cases, good agreement is found. It is however not possible to reproduce the effect observed by HERMES. For dileptons in proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies, considerable shadowing for the whole x_F range is predicted. The influence of the nucleus on the DY transverse momentum distribution is also studied. Furthermore, a new parametrization of the dipole cross section is presented.

Nuclear Shadowing and Coherence Length for Longitudinal and Transverse Photons

Motivated by the recent results for DIS off nuclei from the HERMES experiment we have performed a systematic study of shadowing for transverse and longitudinal photons. We found that the coherence length which controls the onset of nuclear shadowing at small x_{Bj} is much longer for longitudinal than transverse photons, and is much shorter for shadowing of gluons. The light-cone Green function approach we apply properly treats shadowing in the transition region x_{Bj}>0.01. It also incorporates the nonperturbative effects and is legitimate at small Q^2. We calculate nuclear shadowing and compare with data from the HERMES and NMC experiments. Although we expect different nuclear shadowing for longitudinal and transverse photons, numerically it cannot explain the strong effect observed by the HERMES collaboration.

Prompt Contributions to the Dilepton Yield in Heavy Ion Collisions

The mass spectrum is calculated for those dileptons which are produced in the early phase of a heavy ion collisions via the direct production NN -> (l^+)(l^-)X and via the Compton process GN -> (l^+)(l^-)X with prompt gluons radiated in preceding NN interactions. Both mechanisms produce a mass spectrum which decreases steeply with invariant mass of the l^+l^- pair and which is below the CERES data for Pb-Au collisions by about one order of magnitude.

Nuclear Shadowing in DIS at Moderately Small $x_B$

In the rest frame of the nucleus, shadowing is due to hadronic fluctuations of the incoming virtual photon, which interact with the nucleons. We expand these fluctuations in a basis of eigenstates of interaction and take only the $q\bar q$ component of the hadronic structure of the photon into account. We use a representation in which the $q\bar q$-pair has a definite transverse size. Starting from the Dirac equation, we develop a path integral approach that allows to sum all multiple scattering terms and accounts for fluctuations of the transverse size of the pair, as well as for the finite lifetime of the hadronic state. First numerical results hep-ph/9807211 have shown that higher order scattering terms have a strong influence on the total cross section $σ^{γ^*A}_{tot}$. The aim of this paper is to give a detailed derivation of the formula for the total cross section.

Challenges of Nuclear Shadowing in DIS

Nuclear shadowing in DIS at moderately small $x$ is suppressed by the nuclear formfactor and depends on the effective mass of a hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon. We propose a solution to the problems (i) of how to combine a definite transverse size of the fluctuation with a definite effective mass, and (ii) of how to include the nuclear formfactor in the higher multiple scattering terms. Comparison of the numerical results with known approximations shows a substantial difference.
