A detailed study is presented of the relativistic Wigner function for a quantum spinless particle evolving in time according to the Salpeter equation.
The three approaches to relativistic generalization of coherent states are discussed in the simplest case of a spinless particle: the standard, canonical coherent states, the Lorentzian states and the coherent states introduced by Kaiser and independently by Twareque Ali, Antoine and Gazeau. All treatments utilize the Newton-Wigner localization and dynamics described by the Salpeter equation. The behavior of expectation values of relativistic observables in the coherent states is analyzed in detail and the Heisenberg uncertainty relations are investigated.
The probablity current for a quantum spinless relativistic particle is introduced based on the Hamiltonian dynamics approach utilizing the Salpeter equation as an alternative of the Klein-Gordon equation. The correctness of the presented formalism is illustrated by examples of exact solutions to the Salpeter equation including the new ones introduced in this work.
The pseudospherical functions on one-sheet, two-dimensional hyperboloid are discussed. The simplest method of construction of these functions is introduced using the Fock space structure of the representation space of the su(1,1) algebra. The pseudospherical functions with half-integer order are investigated. The counterparts of the Legendre functions for the hyperboloid are introduced and a new class of pseudospherical functions is found.
A detailed study of the relativistic classical and quantum mechanics of the massless harmonic oscillator is presented.
The idea of the preferred frame as a remedy for difficulties of the relativistic quantum mechanics in description of the non-local quantum phenomena was undertaken by such physicists as J. S. Bell and D. Bohm. The possibility of the existence of preferred frame was also seriously treated by P. A. M. Dirac. In this paper, we propose an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type experiment for testing the possible existence of a quantum preferred frame. Our analysis suggests that to verify whether a preferred frame of reference in the quantum world exists it is enough to perform an EPR type experiment with pair of observers staying in the same inertial frame and with use of the massive EPR pair of spin one-half or spin one particles.
The Lorentz covariant classical and quantum statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of an ideal relativistic gas of bradyons (particles slower than light), luxons (particles moving with the speed of light) and tachyons (hypothetical particles faster than light) is discussed. The Lorentz covariant formulation is based on the preferred frame approach which among others enables consistent, free of paradoxes description of tachyons. The thermodynamic functions within the covariant approach are obtained both in classical and quantum case.
We discuss the limit T->0 of the relativistic ideal Fermi gas of luxons (particles moving with the speed of light) and tachyons (hypothetical particles faster than light) based on observations of our recent paper: K. Kowalski, J. Rembielinski and K.A. Smolinski, Phys. Rev. D, 76, 045018 (2007). For bradyons this limit is in fact the nonrelativistic one and therefore it is not studied herein.
The coherent states for the quantum mechanics on a torus and their basic properties are discussed.
We find the time evolution of the system of two non-interacting unstable particles, distinguishable as well as identical ones, in arbitrary reference frame having only the Kraus operators governing the evolution of its components in the rest frame. We than calculate in the rigorous way Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen quantum correlation functions for K0-K0 system in the singlet state taking into account CP-violation and decoherence and show that the results are exactly the same despite the fact we treat kaons as distinguishable or identical particles which means that the statistics of the particles plays no role, at least in considered cases.
We present the probability preserving description of the decaying particle within the framework of quantum mechanics of open systems taking into account the superselection rule prohibiting the superposition of the particle and vacuum. In our approach the evolution of the system is given by a family of completely positive trace preserving maps forming one-parameter dynamical semigroup. We give the Kraus representation for the general evolution of such systems which allows one to write the evolution for systems with two or more particles. Moreover, we show that the decay of the particle can be regarded as a Markov process by finding explicitly the master equation in the Lindblad form. We also show that there are remarkable restrictions on the possible strength of decoherence.
The coherent states are constructed for a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field based on coherent states for the circular motion which have recently been introduced by the authors.
We show that it is possible to define a Lorentz-covariant reduced spin density matrix for massive particles. Such a matrix allows one to calculate the mean values of observables connected with spin measurements (average polarizations). Moreover, it contains not only information about polarization of the particle but also information about its average kinematical state. We also use our formalism to calculate the correlation function in the Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen--Bohm type experiment with massive relativistic particles.
The q-deformed coherent states for a quantum particle on a circle are introduced and their properties investigated.
A classification of idempotents in Clifford algebras C(p,q) is presented. It is shown that using isomorphisms between Clifford algebras C(p,q) and appropriate matrix rings, it is possible to classify idempotents in any Clifford algebra into continuous families. These families include primitive idempotents used to generate minimal one sided ideals in Clifford algebras. Some low dimensional examples are discussed.
In the preceding Comment (quant-ph/0209032) Trifonov disputes our recently proposed uncertainty relations for a quantum particle on a circle. He states that (i) the quantity $Δ^2(\hatϕ)$ introduced by us representing the uncertainty of the angle is not a proper measure of the position uncertainty and therefore the proposed inequalities can hardly be qualified as a relevant uncertainty relations on a circle; and that (ii) the most suitable uncertainty relations on a circle are those based on the Gram-Robertson matrix. It is shown by examples that both points are erroneous.
It is shown that the hypothesis of tachyonic neutrinos leads to the same oscillations effect as if they were usual massive particles. Therefore, the experimental evidence of neutrino oscillations does not distinguish between massive and tachyonic neutrinos.
In this paper we calculate with full details Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen spin correlations in the framework of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. We consider the following situation: two-particle state is prepared (we consider separately distinguishable and identical particles and take into account the space part of the wave function) and two observers in relative motion measure the spin component of the particle along given directions. The measurements are performed in bounded regions of space (detectors), not necessarily simultaneously. The resulting correlation function depends not only on the directions of spin measurements but also on the relative velocity of the observers.
