Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to pp --> b b_bar b b_bar + X at the LHC: the quark induced case

The production of two b-quark pairs is a prominent background for Higgs and New Physics searches in various extensions of the Standard Model. We present here the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the quark induced subprocess using the GOLEM approach for the virtual corrections. We show that our result considerably improves the prediction and conclude that the inclusion of next-to-leading order effects is indispensable for reliable studies of four b-quark observables in hadronic collisions.

Pinning down the Invisible Sneutrino

For points in SUSY parameter space where the sneutrino is lighter than the lightest chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino, its direct mass determination from sneutrino pair production process at e+e- collider is impossible since it decays invisibly. In such a scenario the sneutrino can be discovered and its mass determined from measurements of two-body decays of charginos produced in pairs at the ILC. Using the event generator WHIZARD we study the prospects of measuring sneutrino properties in a realistic ILC environment. In our analysis we include beamstrahlung, initial state radiation, a complete account of reducible backgrounds from SM and SUSY processes, and a complete matrix-element calculation of the SUSY signal which encompasses all irreducible background and interference contributions. We also simulate photon induced background processes using exact matrix elements. Radiation effects and the cuts to reduce background strongly modify the edges of the lepton energy spectra from which the sneutrino and chargino mass are determined. We discuss possible approaches to measure the sneutrino mass with optimal precision.

Precise predictions for LHC using a GOLEM

In this talk we present recent next-to-leading order results relevant for LHC phenomenology obtained with the GOLEM method. After reviewing the status of this Feynman diagrammatic approach for multi-leg one-loop calculations we discuss three applications: the loop-induced process gg -> Z^*Z^* and the virtual corrections to the five and six point processes qq -> ZZg and u ubar -> s sbar c cbar. We demonstrate that our method leads to representations of such amplitudes which allow for efficient phase space integration. In this context we propose a reweighting technique of the leading order unweighted events by local K-factors.

Pseudo-axions in Little Higgs models

Little Higgs models have an enlarged global symmetry which makes the Higgs boson a pseudo-Goldstone boson. This symmetry typically contains spontaneously broken U(1) subgroups which provide light electroweak-singlet pseudoscalars. Unless such particles are absorbed as the longitudinal component of $Z'$ states, they appear as pseudoscalars in the physical spectrum at the electroweak scale. We outline their significant impact on Little Higgs phenomenology and analyze a few possible signatures at the LHC and other future colliders in detail. In particular, their presence significantly affects the physics of the new heavy quark states predicted in Little Higgs models, and inclusive production at LHC may yield impressive diphoton resonances.

(N)LO Simulation of Chargino Production and Decay

We consider NLO chargino production and decays at the ILC. For this, we present an NLO extension of the Monte Carlo Event Generator Whizard including the NLO production. For photonic corrections, we use both a fixed order and a resummation approach. The latter method evades the problem of negative event weights and automatically includes leading higher order corrections. We present results for cross sections and event generation for both methods. As a first step towards a full NLO Monte Carlo, we consider a LO implementation of the chargino production and subsequent leptonic decay and investigate the precision of the sneutrino mass determination by means of lepton energy distributions in chargino decays. The SM and SUSY backgrounds are included in our study using full matrix elements as well as smearing effects from ISR and beamstrahlung. Without using energy distribution fits, the sneutrino mass can be determined with an error in the percent regime.

NLO Event Generation for Chargino Production at the ILC

We present a Monte-Carlo event generator for simulating chargino pair-production at the International Linear Collider (ILC) at next-to-leading order in the electroweak couplings. By properly resumming photons in the soft and collinear regions, we avoid negative event weights, so the program can simulate physical (unweighted) event samples. Photons are explicitly generated throughout the range where they can be experimentally resolved. Inspecting the dependence on the cutoffs separating the soft and collinear regions, we evaluate the systematic errors due to soft and collinear approximations. In the resummation approach, the residual uncertainty can be brought down to the per-mil level, coinciding with the expected statistical uncertainty at the ILC.

Distinguishing Little-Higgs Product and Simple Group models at the LHC and ILC

We propose a means to discriminate between the two basic variants of Little Higgs models, the Product Group and Simple Group models, at the next generation of colliders. It relies on a special coupling of light pseudoscalar particles present in Little Higgs models, the pseudo-axions, to the Z and the Higgs boson, which is present only in Simple Group models. We discuss the collider phenomenology of the pseudo-axion in the presence of such a coupling at the LHC, where resonant production and decay of either the Higgs or the pseudo-axion induced by that coupling can be observed for much of parameter space. The full allowed range of parameters, including regions where the observability is limited at the LHC, is covered by a future ILC, where double scalar production would be a golden channel to look for.

Unification Without Doublet-Triplet Splitting

Matter-Higgs unification in string-inspired supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories predicts the existence of colored states in the Higgs multiplets and calls for two extra generations of Higgs-like fields ('unhiggses'). If these states are present near the TeV scale, gauge-coupling unification points to the existence of two distinct scales, 10^15 GeV where right-handed neutrinos and a Pati-Salam symmetry appear, and 10^18 GeV where complete unification is achieved. Baryon-number conservation, while not guaranteed, can naturally emerge from an underlying flavor symmetry. Collider signatures and dark-matter physics may be drastically different from the conventional MSSM.

Determination of New Electroweak Parameters at the ILC - Sensitivity to New Physics

We present a study of the sensitivity of an International Linear Collider (ILC) to electroweak parameters in the absence of a light Higgs boson. In particular, we consider those parameters that have been inaccessible at previous colliders, quartic gauge couplings. Within a generic effective-field theory context we analyze all processes that contain quasi-elastic weak-boson scattering, using complete six-fermion matrix elements in unweighted event samples, fast simulation of the ILC detector, and a multidimensional parameter fit of the set of anomalous couplings. The analysis does not rely on simplifying assumptions such as custodial symmetry or approximations such as the equivalence theorem. We supplement this by a similar new study of triple weak-boson production, which is sensitive to the same set of anomalous couplings. Including the known results on triple gauge couplings and oblique corrections, we thus quantitatively determine the indirect sensitivity of the ILC to new physics in the electroweak symmetry-breaking sector, conveniently parameterized by real or fictitious resonances in each accessible spin/isospin channel.

Toward High Precision Higgs-Boson Measurements at the International Linear e+e- Collider

This report reviews the properties of Higgs bosons in the Standard Model (SM) and its various extensions. We give an extensive overview about the potential of the ILC operated at centre-of-mass energies up to 1 TeV (including the gamma gamma option) for the determination of the Higgs boson properties. This comprises the measurement of the Higgs boson mass, its couplings to SM fermions and gauge bosons, and the determination of the spin and the CP quantum numbers of the Higgs. The extensions of the SM that are analyzed in more detail are heavy SM-like Higgs bosons, heavy Higgs bosons in the framework of Supersymmetry (SUSY) and further exotic scenarios. We review recent theoretical developments in the field of Higgs boson physics. The important question what the ILC can contribute to Higgs boson physics after the LHC, the LHC/ILC interplay and synergy is discussed. The impact of Higgs boson physics on cosmology in several SUSY frameworks is analyzed. The impact of the accelerator and dector performance on the precision of measurements are discussed in detail. We propose a strategy to optimize future analyses. Open questions arising for the various topics are listed, further topics of study and corresponding roadmaps are suggested.

Supersymmetry Simulations with Off-Shell Effects for LHC and ILC

At the LHC and at an ILC, serious studies of new physics benefit from a proper simulation of signals and backgrounds. Using supersymmetric sbottom pair production as an example, we show how multi-particle final states are necessary to properly describe off-shell effects induced by QCD, photon radiation, or by intermediate on-shell states. To ensure the correctness of our findings we compare in detail the implementation of the supersymmetric Lagrangian in MadGraph, Sherpa and Whizard. As a future reference we give the numerical results for several hundred cross sections for the production of supersymmetric particles, checked with all three codes.

Next Generation Multi-particle event generators for the MSSM

We present a next generation of multi-particle Monte Carlo (MC) Event generators for LHC and ILC for the MSSM, namely the three program packages Madgraph/MadEvent, WHiZard/O'Mega and Sherpa/Amegic++. The interesting but difficult phenomenology of supersymmetric models at the upcoming colliders demands a corresponding complexity and maturity from simulation tools. This includes multi-particle final states, reducible and irreducible backgrounds, spin correlations, real emission of photons and gluons, etc., which are incorporated in the programs presented here. The framework of a model with such a huge particle content and as complicated as the MSSM makes strenuous tests and comparison of codes inevitable. Various tests show agreement among the three different programs; the tables of cross sections produced in these tests may serve as a future reference for other codes. Furthermore, first MSSM physics analyses performed with these programs are presented here.

Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis: SPA Convention and Project

High-precision analyses of supersymmetry parameters aim at reconstructing the fundamental supersymmetric theory and its breaking mechanism. A well defined theoretical framework is needed when higher-order corrections are included. We propose such a scheme, Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis SPA, based on a consistent set of conventions and input parameters. A repository for computer programs is provided which connect parameters in different schemes and relate the Lagrangian parameters to physical observables at LHC and high energy e+e- linear collider experiments, i.e., masses, mixings, decay widths and production cross sections for supersymmetric particles. In addition, programs for calculating high-precision low energy observables, the density of cold dark matter (CDM) in the universe as well as the cross sections for CDM search experiments are included. The SPA scheme still requires extended efforts on both the theoretical and experimental side before data can be evaluated in the future at the level of the desired precision. We take here an initial step of testing the SPA scheme by applying the techniques involved to a specific supersymmetry reference point.

Resonances and Electroweak Observables at the ILC

Precise measurements of the interactions of electroweak vector bosons at the ILC yield information about the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking. In order to combine this with the possible observation of new resonances or the effects of new strong interactions at the LHC, we need to relate resonance parameters with low-energy observables. We derive these relations for a generic setup and draw conclusions about the new-physics reach of the ILC in the electroweak sector.

The Low-Energy Structure of Little Higgs Models

The mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking in Little Higgs Models is analyzed in an effective field theory approach. This enables us to identify observable effects irrespective of the specific structure and content of the heavy degrees of freedom. We parameterize these effects in a common operator basis and present the complete set of anomalous contributions to gauge-boson, Higgs, and fermion couplings. If the hypercharge assignments of the model retain their standard form, electroweak precision data are affected only via the S and T parameters and by contact interactions. As a proof of principle, we apply this formalism to the minimal model and consider the current constraints on the parameter space. Finally, we show how the interplay of measurements at LHC and a Linear Collider could reveal the structure of these models.
