Dynamics of K$_2$Ni$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ governed by proximity to a 3D spin liquid model

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) have become a key area of research in magnetism due to their remarkable properties, such as long-range entanglement, fractional excitations, pinch-point singularities, and topologically protected phenomena. In recent years, the search for QSLs has expanded into the three-dimensional world, where promising features have been found in materials that form pyrochlore and hyper-kagome lattices, despite the suppression of quantum fluctuations due to high dimensionality. One such material is the $S = 1$ K$_2$Ni$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ compound, which belongs to the langbeinite family consisting of two interconnected trillium lattices. Although magnetically ordered, K$_2$Ni$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ has been found to exhibit a highly dynamical and correlated state which can be driven into a pure quantum spin liquid under magnetic fields of only $B \simeq 4$~T. In this article, we combine inelastic neutron scattering measurements with pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) and classical Monte Carlo (cMC) calculations to study the magnetic properties of K$_2$Ni$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$, revealing a high level of agreement between the experiment and theory. We further reveal the origin of the dynamical state in K$_2$Ni$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ by studying a larger set of exchange parameters, uncovering an `island of liquidity' around a focal point given by a magnetic network composed of tetrahedra on a trillium lattice.

Signatures for Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical behaviour in the planar antiferromagnet BaNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$

We investigate the critical properties of the spin-$1$ honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, both below and above the ordering temperature $T_N$ using neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation measurements. Our results characterize BaNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnet across the entire temperature range, displaying a series of crossovers from 2D Ising-like to 2D XY and then to 2D Heisenberg behavior with increasing temperature. In particular, the extracted critical exponent of the order parameter reveals a narrow temperature regime close to $T_N$, in which the system behaves as a 2D XY antiferromagnet. Above $T_N$, evidence for Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior driven by vortex excitations is obtained from the scaling of the correlation length. Our experimental results are in accord with classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations performed for microscopic magnetic model Hamiltonians for BaNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$.

Evidence for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid in PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a highly entangled magnetic state characterized by the absence of static magnetism in its ground state. Instead, the spins fluctuate in a highly correlated way down to the lowest temperatures. The QSL is very rare and is confined to a few specific cases where the interactions between the magnetic ions cannot be simultaneously satisfied (known as frustration). Lattices with magnetic ions in triangular or tetrahedral arrangements which interact via isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions can generate such a frustration. Three-dimensional isotropic spin liquids have mostly been sought in materials where the magnetic ions form pyrochlore or hyperkagome lattices. Here we present a three-dimensional lattice called the hyper-hyperkagome that enables spin liquid behaviour and manifests in the compound PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that this system exhibits signs of being a quantum spin liquid with no detectable static magnetism together with the presence of diffuse continua in the magnetic spectrum suggestive of fractional spinon excitations.

Anisotropic susceptibilities in the honeycomb Kitaev system $α$-RuCl$_{3}$

The magnetic insulator $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate to realize Kitaev interactions on a quasi-2D honeycomb lattice. We perform extensive susceptibility measurements on single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, including angle-dependence of the in-plane longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities, which reveal a unidirectional anisotropy within the honeycomb plane. By comparing the experimental results to a high-temperature expansion of a Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ spin Hamiltonian with bond anisotropy, we find excellent agreement with the observed phase shift and periodicity of the angle-resolved susceptibilities. Within this model, we show that the pronounced difference between in-plane and out-of-plane susceptibilities as well as the finite transverse susceptibility are rooted in strong symmetric off-diagonal $Γ$ spin exchange. The $Γ$ couplings and relationships between other terms in the model Hamiltonian are quantified by extracting relevant Curie-Weiss intercepts from the experimental data.

Numerical treatment of spin systems with unrestricted spin length $S$: A functional renormalization group study

We develop a generalized pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) approach that can be applied to arbitrary Heisenberg models with spins ranging from the quantum case $S=1/2$ to the classical limit $S\rightarrow\infty$. Within this framework, spins of magnitude $S$ are realized by implementing $M=2S$ copies of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom on each lattice site. We confirm that even without explicitly projecting onto the highest spin sector of the Hilbert space, ground states tend to select the largest possible local spin magnitude. This justifies the average treatment of the pseudo fermion constraint in previous spin-1/2 PFFRG studies. We apply this method to the antiferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ honeycomb Heisenberg model with nearest neighbor $J_1>0$ and second neighbor $J_2>0$ interactions. Mapping out the phase diagram in the $J_2/J_1$-$S$ plane we find that upon increasing $S$ quantum fluctuations are rapidly decreasing. In particular, already at $S=1$ we find no indication for a magnetically disordered phase. In the limit $S\rightarrow\infty$, the known phase diagram of the classical system is exactly reproduced. More generally, we prove that for $S\rightarrow\infty$ the PFFRG approach is identical to the Luttinger-Tisza method.

Relevance of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model for the honeycomb lattice iridates A_2IrO_3

Combining thermodynamic measurements with theoretical density functional and thermodynamic calculations we demonstrate that the honeycomb lattice iridates A2IrO3 (A = Na, Li) are magnetically ordered Mott insulators where the magnetism of the effective spin-orbital S = 1/2 moments can be captured by a Heisenberg-Kitaev (HK) model with Heisenberg interactions beyond nearest-neighbor exchange. Experimentally, we observe an increase of the Curie-Weiss temperature from θ= -125 K for Na2IrO3 to θ= -33 K for Li2IrO3, while the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature remains roughly the same T_N = 15 K for both materials. Using finite-temperature functional renormalization group calculations we show that this evolution of θ, T_N, the frustration parameter f = θ/T_N, and the zig-zag magnetic ordering structure suggested for both materials by density functional theory can be captured within this extended HK model. Combining our experimental and theoretical results, we estimate that Na2IrO3 is deep in the magnetically ordered regime of the HK model (α\approx 0.25), while Li2IrO3 appears to be close to a spin-liquid regime (0.6 < α< 0.7).
