Magnetic phase diagram of a frustrated ferrimagnetic ladder: Relation to the one-dimensional boson Hubbard model

We study the magnetic phase diagram of two coupled mixed-spin $(1,{1/2})$ Heisenberg chains as a function of the frustration parameter related to diagonal exchange couplings. The analysis is performed by using spin-wave series and exact numerical diagonalization techniques. The obtained phase diagram--containing the Luttinger liquid phase, the plateau phase with a magnetization per rung $M=1/2$, and the fully polarized phase--is closely related to the generic $(J/U,μ/U)$ phase diagram of the one-dimensional boson Hubbard model.

Direct calculation of the spin stiffness on square, triangular and cubic lattices using the coupled cluster method

We present a method for the direct calculation of the spin stiffness by means of the coupled cluster method. For the spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square, the triangular and the cubic lattices we calculate the stiffness in high orders of approximation. For the square and the cubic lattices our results are in very good agreement with the best results available in the literature. For the triangular lattice our result is more precise than any other result obtained so far by other approximate method.

Thermodynamics of S>=1 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with uniaxial single-ion anisotropy

The thermodynamic properties of S>=1 ferromagnetic chains with an easy-axis single-ion anisotropy are investigated at arbitrary temperatures by both a Green-function approach, based on a decoupling of three-spin operator products, and by exact diagonalizations of chains with up to N=12 sites using periodic boundary conditions. A good agreement between the results of both approaches is found. For the S=1 chain, the temperature dependence of the specific heat reveals two maxima, if the ratio of the anisotropy energy D and the exchange energy J exceeds a characteristic value, D/J >7.4, and only one maximum for D/J <7.4. This is in contrast to previous exact diagonalization data for comparably small chains (N <= 7) using open boundary conditions. Comparing the theory with experiments on di-bromo Ni complexes the fit to the specific heat yields concrete values for D and J which are used to make predictions for the temperature dependences of the spin-wave spectrum, the correlation length, and the transverse magnetic susceptibility.

System Tests of the ATLAS Pixel Detector

The innermost part of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will be a pixel detector, which is presently under construction. Once installed into the experimental area, access will be extremely limited. To ensure that the integrated detector assembly operates as expected, a fraction of the detector which includes the power supplies and monitoring system, the optical readout, and the pixel modules themselves, has been assembled and operated in a laboratory setting for what we refer to as system tests. Results from these tests are presented.

High-Order Coupled Cluster Calculations Via Parallel Processing: An Illustration For CaV$_4$O$_9$

The coupled cluster method (CCM) is a method of quantum many-body theory that may provide accurate results for the ground-state properties of lattice quantum spin systems even in the presence of strong frustration and for lattices of arbitrary spatial dimensionality. Here we present a significant extension of the method by introducing a new approach that allows an efficient parallelization of computer codes that carry out ``high-order'' CCM calculations. We find that we are able to extend such CCM calculations by an order of magnitude higher than ever before utilized in a high-order CCM calculation for an antiferromagnet. Furthermore, we use only a relatively modest number of processors, namely, eight. Such very high-order CCM calculations are possible {\it only} by using such a parallelized approach. An illustration of the new approach is presented for the ground-state properties of a highly frustrated two-dimensional magnetic material, CaV$_4$O$_9$. Our best results for the ground-state energy and sublattice magnetization for the pure nearest-neighbor model are given by $E_g/N=-0.5534$ and $M=0.19$, respectively, and we predict that there is no Néel ordering in the region $0.2 \le J_2/J_1 \le 0.7$. These results are shown to be in excellent agreement with the best results of other approximate methods.

Entropy of fermionic models on highly frustrated lattices

Spinless fermions on highly frustrated lattices are characterized by a lowest single-particle band which is completely flat. Concrete realizations are provided by the sawtooth chain and the kagome lattice. For these models a real-space picture is given in terms of localized states. Furthermore, we find a finite zero-temperature entropy for a suitable choice of the chemical potential. The entropy is computed numerically at finite temperature and one observes a strong cooling effect during adiabatic changes of the chemical potential. We argue that the localized states, the associated zero-temperature entropy and thus also the large temperature variations carry over to the repulsive Hubbard model. The relation to flat-band ferromagnetism is also discussed briefly.

Coupled Cluster Treatment of the Shastry-Sutherland Antiferromagnet

We consider the zero-temperature properties of the spin-half two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland antiferromagnet by using a high-order coupled cluster method (CCM) treatment. We find that this model demonstrates various groundstate phases (Néel, magnetically disordered, orthogonal dimer), and we make predictions for the positions of the phase transition points. In particular, we find that orthogonal-dimer state becomes the groundstate at ${J}^{d}_2/J_1 \sim 1.477$. For the critical point $J_2^{c}/J_1$ where the semi-classical Néel order disappears we obtain a significantly lower value than $J_2^{d}/J_1$, namely, ${J}^{c}_2/J_1$ in the range $[1.14, 1.39]$. We therefore conclude that an intermediate phase exists between the \Neel and the dimer phases. An analysis of the energy of a competing spiral phase yields clear evidence that the spiral phase does not become the groundstate for any value of $J_2$. The intermediate phase is therefore magnetically disordered but may exhibit plaquette or columnar dimer ordering.

Localized-magnon states in strongly frustrated quantum spin lattices

Recent developments concerning localized-magnon eigenstates in strongly frustrated spin lattices and their effect on the low-temperature physics of these systems in high magnetic fields are reviewed. After illustrating the construction and the properties of localized-magnon states we describe the plateau and the jump in the magnetization process caused by these states. Considering appropriate lattice deformations fitting to the localized magnons we discuss a spin-Peierls instability in high magnetic fields related to these states. Last but not least we consider the degeneracy of the localized-magnon eigenstates and the related thermodynamics in high magnetic fields. In particular, we discuss the low-temperature maximum in the isothermal entropy versus field curve and the resulting enhanced magnetocaloric effect, which allows efficient magnetic cooling from quite large temperatures down to very low ones.

Quantum kagome antiferromagnet in a magnetic field: Low-lying non-magnetic excitations versus valence-bond crystal order

We study the ground state properties of a quantum antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice in the presence of a magnetic field, paying particular attention to the stability of the plateau at magnetization 1/3 of saturation and the nature of its ground state. We discuss fluctuations around classical ground states and argue that quantum and classical calculations at the harmonic level do not lead to the same result in contrast to the zero-field case. For spin S=1/2 we find a magnetic gap below which an exponential number of non-magnetic excitations are present. Moreover, such non-magnetic excitations also have a (much smaller) gap above the three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide evidence that the ground state has long-range order of valence-bond crystal type with nine spins in the unit cell.

Absence of long-range order in a spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the stacked kagome lattice

We study the ground state of a spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the stacked kagome lattice by using a spin-rotation-invariant Green's-function method. Since the pure two-dimensional kagome antiferromagnet is most likely a magnetically disordered quantum spin liquid, we investigate the question whether the coupling of kagome layers in a stacked three-dimensional system may lead to a magnetically ordered ground state. We present spin-spin correlation functions and correlation lengths. For comparison we apply also linear spin wave theory. Our results provide strong evidence that the system remains short-range ordered independent of the sign and the strength of the interlayer coupling.

Frustration effects in magnetic molecules

By means of exact diagonalization we study the ground-state and the low-temperature physics of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the cuboctahedron and the icosidodecahedron. Both are frustrated magnetic polytopes and correspond to the arrangement of magnetic atoms in the magnetic molecules Cu12La8 and Mo72Fe30. The interplay of strong quantum fluctuations and frustration influences the ground state spin correlations drastically and leads to an interesting magnetization process at low temperatures. Furthermore the frustration yields low-lying non-magnetic excitations resulting in an extra low-temperature peak in the specific heat.

Ground state and low-lying excitations of the spin-1/2 XXZ model on the kagome lattice at magnetization 1/3

We study the ground state and low-lying excitations of the S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at magnetization one third of the saturation. An exponential number of non-magnetic states is found below a magnetic gap. The non-magnetic excitations also have a gap above the ground state, but it is much smaller than the magnetic gap. This ground state corresponds to an ordered pattern with resonances in one third of the hexagons. The spin-spin correlation function is short ranged, but there is long-range order of valence-bond crystal type.

Absence of magnetic order for the spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the star lattice

We study the ground-state properties of the spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional star lattice by spin-wave theory, exact diagonalization and a variational mean-field approach. We find evidence that the star lattice is (besides the \kagome lattice) a second candidate among the 11 uniform Archimedean lattices where quantum fluctuations in combination with frustration lead to a quantum paramagnetic ground state. Although the classical ground state of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the star exhibits a huge non-trivial degeneracy like on the \kagome lattice, its quantum ground state is most likely dimerized with a gap to all excitations. Finally, we find several candidates for plateaux in the magnetization curve as well as a macroscopic magnetization jump to saturation due to independent localized magnon states.

The spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square-kagomé lattice: Ground state and low-lying excitations

We discuss the ground state and the low-lying excitations of the spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice. This magnetic system belongs to the class of highly frustrated spin systems with an infinite non-trivial degeneracy of the classical ground state as it is known also for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome and on the star lattice. The quantum ground state of the spin-half system is a quantum paramagnet likely with a finite spin gap and with a large number of non-magnetic excitations within this gap. The magnetization versus field curve shows plateaux as well as a macroscopic magnetization jump to saturation due to independent localized magnon states.

Comment on "Competition between helimagnetism and commensurate quantum spin correlations in LiCu2O2"

The microscopic origin of the recently observed helical structure in LiCu2O2 [1] is considered. It is shown that the frustrated antiferromagnetic double chain scenario adopted in Ref.1 is unrealistic. It should be replaced by a frustrated single-chain (CuO2) scenario proposed in Ref. 2 with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor exchange integrals \. [1] T. Influence of Ising-anisotropy on the zero-temperature phase transition in the square lattice spin-1/2 J-J' model

We use a variational mean-field like approach, the coupled cluster method (CCM) and exact diagonalization to investigate the ground-state order-disorder transition for the square lattice spin-half XXZ model with two different nearest-neighbor couplings $J$ and $J'$. Increasing $J' > J$ the model shows in the isotropic Heisenberg limit a second-order transition from semi-classical Néel order to a quantum paramagnetic phase with enhanced local dimer correlations on the $J'$ bonds at about $J'_{c} \sim 2.5 ... 3 J$. This transition is driven by the quantum competition between $J'$ and $J$. Increasing the anisotropy parameter $Δ> 1$ we diminish the quantum fluctuations and thus the degree of competition. As a result the transition point $J'_{c}$ is shifted to larger values. We find indications for a linear increase of $J'_{c}$ with $Δ$, i.e. the transition disappears in the Ising limit $Δ\to \infty$.

Influence of the spin quantum number $s$ on the zero-temperature phase transition in the square lattice $J$-$J'$ model

We investigate the phase diagram of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with two different nearest-neighbor bonds $J$ and $J'$ ($J$-$J'$ model) at zero temperature. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition at a critical value $J'_c > J$ between a semi-classically ordered Néel and a magnetically disordered quantum paramagnetic phase of valence-bond type, which is driven by local singlet formation on $J'$ bonds. We study the influence of spin quantum number $s$ on this phase transition by means of a variational mean-field approach, the coupled cluster method, and the Lanczos exact-diagonalization technique. We present evidence that the critical value $J'_c$ increases with growing $s$ according to $J'_c \propto s(s+1)$.
