Ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an Archimedean 4-6-12 lattice

An investigation of the Néel Long Range Order (NLRO) in the ground state of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin system on the two-dimensional, uniform, bipartite lattice consisting of squares, hexagons and dodecagons is presented. Basing on the analysis of the order parameter and the long-distance correlation function the NLRO is shown to occur in this system. Exact diagonalization and variational (Resonating Valence Bond) methods are applied.

Collective excitations in ferrimagnetic Heisenberg ladders

We study ground-state properties and the low-lying excitations of Heisenberg spin ladders composed of two ferrimagnetic chains with alternating site spins $(S_1>S_2)$ by using the bosonic Dyson-Maleev formalism and Lanczos numerical techniques. The emphasis is on properties of the ferrimagnetic phase which is stable for antiferromagnetic interchain couplings $J_{\perp}\geq 0$. There are two basic implications of the underlying lattice structure: (i) the spin-wave excitations form folded acoustic and optical branches in the extended Brillouin zone and (ii) the ground state parameters (such as the on-site magnetizations and spin-stiffness constant) show a crossover behavior in the weak-coupling region $0<J_{\perp}<1$. The above peculiarities of the ladder ferrimagnetic state are studied up to second order in the quasiparticle interaction and by a numerical diagonalization of ladders containing up to N=12 rungs. The presented results for the ground-state parameters and the excitation spectrum can be used in studies on the low-temperature thermodynamics of ferrimagnetic ladders.

High-Order Coupled Cluster Method Calculations for the Ground- and Excited-State Properties of the Spin-Half XXZ Model

In this article, we present new results of high-order coupled cluster method (CCM) calculations, based on a Néel model state with spins aligned in the $z$-direction, for both the ground- and excited-state properties of the spin-half {\it XXZ} model on the linear chain, the square lattice, and the simple cubic lattice. In particular, the high-order CCM formalism is extended to treat the excited states of lattice quantum spin systems for the first time. Completely new results for the excitation energy gap of the spin-half {\it XXZ} model for these lattices are thus determined. These high-order calculations are based on a localised approximation scheme called the LSUB$m$ scheme in which we retain all $k$-body correlations defined on all possible locales of $m$ adjacent lattice sites ($k \le m$). The ``raw'' CCM LSUB$m$ results are seen to provide very good results for the ground-state energy, sublattice magnetisation, and the value of the lowest-lying excitation energy for each of these systems. However, in order to obtain even better results, two types of extrapolation scheme of the LSUB$m$ results to the limit $m \to \infty$ (i.e., the exact solution in the thermodynamic limit) are presented. The extrapolated results provide extremely accurate results for the ground- and excited-state properties of these systems across a wide range of values of the anisotropy parameter.

Spin-Peierls instability in a quantum spin chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We analysed the ground state energy of some dimerized spin-1/2 transverse XX and Heisenberg chains with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction to study the influence of the latter interaction on the spin-Peierls instability. We found that DM interaction may act either in favour of the dimerization or against it. The actual result depends on the dependence of DM interaction on the distortion amplitude in comparison with such dependence for the isotropic exchange interaction.

The dynamics of a hole in a CuO_4 plaquette: electron energy-loss spectroscopy of Li_2CuO_2

We have measured the energy and momentum dependent loss function of Li_2CuO_2 single crystals by means of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission. Using the same values for the model parameters, the low-energy features of the spectrum as well as published Cu 2p_(3/2) x-ray photoemission data of Li_2CuO_2 are well described by a cluster model that consists of a single CuO_4 plaquette only. This demonstrates that charge excitations in Li_2CuO_2 are strongly localized.

Cu-O network dependent core-hole screening in low-dimensional cuprates: A theoretical analysis

We analyze the influence of the dimensionality on the Cu 2p_3/2 core level X-ray photoemission spectra of undoped cuprates. Both exchange splitting and delocalization properties are described within one framework using a multi-band Hubbard model. The spectral intensity is calculated by means of the Mori-Zwanzig projection technique for a CuO_4 plaquette ('zero'-dimensional), an infinite CuO_3 chain (one-dimensional), and an infinite CuO_2 plane (two-dimensional). The results are compared to the spectra of Bi_2CuO_4, Sr_2CuO_3, and Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2. Our analysis allows to distinguish between effects of the Cu-O geometry and effects from material-specific properties.

The role of Zhang-Rice singlet-like excitations in one-dimensional cuprates

We present the first calculation of the electron-energy loss spectrum of infinite one-dimensional undoped CuO_3 chains within a multi-band Hubbard model. The results show good agreement with experimental spectra of Sr_2CuO_3. The main feature in the spectra is found to be due to the formation of Zhang-Rice singlet-like excitations. The q-dependence of these excitations is a consequence of the inner structure of the Zhang-Rice singlet. This makes the inclusion of the oxygen degrees of freedom essential for the description of the relevant excitations. We observe that no enhanced intersite Coulomb repulsion is necessary to explain the experimental data.

Spin-Peierls instability in the spin-1/2 transverse XX chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We calculate exactly the density of magnon states of the regularly alternating spin-1/2 XX chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The obtained results permit us to examine the stability of the chain with respect to spin-Peierls dimerization. We found that depending on the dependences of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on distortion amplitude it may act either in favour of the dimerization or against the dimerization.

Analytical ground state for the three-band Hubbard model

For the calculation of charge excitations as those observed in, e.g., photo-emission spectroscopy or in electron-energy loss spectroscopy, a correct description of ground-state charge properties is essential. In strongly correlated systems like the undoped cuprates this is a highly non-trivial problem. In this paper we derive a non-perturbative analytical approximation for the ground state of the three-band Hubbard model on an infinite, half filled CuO_2 plane. By comparison with Projector Quantum Monte Carlo calculations it is shown that the resulting expressions correctly describe the charge properties of the ground state. Relations to other approaches are discussed. The analytical ground state preserves size consistency and can be generalized for other geometries, while still being both easy to interpret and to evaluate.

Exact diagonalization of the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on finite bcc lattices to estimate properties on the infinite lattice

Here we generate finite bipartite body-centred cubic lattices up to 32 vertices. We have studied the spin one half Heisenberg antiferromagnet by diagonalizing its Hamiltonian on each of the finite lattices and hence computing its ground state properties. By extrapolation of these data we obtain estimates of the T = 0 properties on the infinite bcc lattice. Our estimate of the T = 0 energy agrees to five parts in ten thousand with third order spin wave and series expansion method estimates, while our estimate of the staggered magnetization agrees with the spin wave estimate to within a quarter of one percent.

Ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional square-hexagonal-dodecagonal lattice

Up to now, the existence of the the magnetic Neel Long Range Order (NLRO) in nearest neighbor, spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic (AF) lattice systems has been examined for seven, from the eleven existing, two-dimensional, uniform lattices. Plaquettes forming these uniform (Archimedean) lattices (e.g. square, triangular, kagome) are different regular polygons. An investigation of the NLRO in the ground state of AF spin systems on the seventh uniform (bipartite) lattice consisting of squares, hexagons and dodecagons is presented. The NLRO is shown to occur in this system. A simple conjecture concerning the existence of the NLRO in the ground state of antiferromagnetic, spin-1/2 systems on two dimensional, Archimedean lattices, is formulated.

Frustrated quantum Heisenberg ferrimagnetic chains

We study the ground-state properties of weakly frustrated Heisenberg ferrimagnetic chains with nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and two types of alternating sublattice spins S_1 > S_2, using 1/S spin-wave expansions, density-matrix renormalization group, and exact- diagonalization techniques. It is argued that the zero-point spin fluctuations completely destroy the classical commensurate- incommensurate continuous transition. Instead, the long-range ferrimagnetic state disappears through a discontinuous transition to a singlet state at a larger value of the frustration parameter. In the ferrimagnetic phase we find a disorder point marking the onset of incommensurate real-space short-range spin-spin correlations.

The antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain with competing dimers and plaquettes: Numerical versus exact results

We examine the ground state and the excitations of an one-dimensional Heisenberg spin 1/2 antiferromagnet with alternating dimers and four-spin plaquettes (dimer-plaquette chain). The properties of the system depend on the competing dimer and plaquette bonds. Several exact, exact-numerical and perturbational results are presented. We find that the system is gapped for all parameter values. For the latter one we find an effective S=1 Haldane like behaviour in the limit of dominating dimer bonds. The model considered is related to the recently found 1/5-depleted square-lattice Heisenberg system $CaV_4O_9$.

Magnetic model for Ba_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2

Ba_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2 consists of two types of copper atoms, Cu(A) and Cu(B). We study the corresponding Heisenberg model with three antiferromagnetic couplings, J_AA, J_BB and J_AB. We find interesting frustration effects due to the coupling J_AB.

Low-lying excitations and thermodynamics of an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg fractal system of a dimension between one and two

We investigate a frustrated Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on a fractal lattice of dimension d=ln3/ln2 (Sierpinski gasket). Calculations were performed using (a) exact diagonalization of all eigenstates and eigenvectors for systems up to N=15 and (b) the Decoupled-Cell Quantum-Monte-Carlo method for systems up to N=366. We present the low-lying spectrum and the specific heat. The specific heat shows a second maximum in the low-temperature region. This behavior is similar to the behavior of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a kagome lattice and suggests a disordered ground state and a spin gap in the considered system.

Marshall-Peierls sign rule for excited states of the frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We present analytical and numerical calculations for some exited states of the frustrated J1-J2 spin-1/2 Heisenberg model for linear chains and square lattices. We consider the lowest eigenstates in the subspaces determined by the eigenvalue M of the spin operator S_total^z. Because of the reduced number of Ising basis states in the subspaces with higher M we are able to diagonalize systems with up to N=144 spins. We find evidence that the Marshall-Peierls sign rule survives for a relatively large frustration parameter J2.
