Precise measurement of the absolute fluorescence yield of the 337 nm band in atmospheric gases

A measurement of the absolute fluorescence yield of the 337 nm nitrogen band, relevant to ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) detectors, is reported. Two independent calibrations of the fluorescence emission induced by a 120 GeV proton beam were employed: Cherenkov light from the beam particle and calibrated light from a nitrogen laser. The fluorescence yield in air at a pressure of 1013 hPa and temperature of 293 K was found to be $Y_{337} = 5.61\pm 0.06_{stat} \pm 0.21_{syst}$ photons/MeV. When compared to the fluorescence yield currently used by UHECR experiments, this measurement improves the uncertainty by a factor of three, and has a significant impact on the determination of the energy scale of the cosmic ray spectrum.

Precise Measurement of the Absolute Yield of Fluorescence Photons in Atmospheric Gases

We have performed a measurement of the absolute yield of fluorescence photons at the Fermilab Test Beam. A systematic uncertainty at 5% level was achieved by the use of Cherenkov radiation as a reference calibration light source. A cross-check was performed by an independent calibration using a laser light source. A significant improvement on the energy scale uncertainty of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays is expected.

On Stimulated Radiation of Black Holes

The Unruh's thermal state in the vicinity of the event horizon of the black hole provides conditions where impinging particles can radiate other particles. The subsequent decays may eventually lead to observable radiation of photons and neutrinos induced even by massive particles with gravitational interaction only. The hadronic particles will induce $\sim 30$ MeV gamma radiation from $π^{0}$ decays.

Prompt muons in extended air showers

We present results of simulations of a muon content in the air showers induced by very high energy cosmic rays. Muon energy distributions and muon densities at ground level are given. We discuss a prompt muon component generated by decays of charm mesons. The method combines standard Monte Carlo generators incorporated in the CORSIKA code and phenomenological estimates of the charm hadroproduction.

ZFITTER -- An Analytical Program for Fermion Pair Production in e+e- Annihilation

We describe how to use ZFITTER, a program based on a semi-analytical approach to fermion pair production in e+e- annihilation and Bhabha scattering. A flexible treatment of complete ${\cal O}(α)$ QED corrections, also including higher orders, allows for three calculational {\bf chains} with different realistic sets of restrictions in the photon phase space. {\tt ZFITTER} consists of several {\bf branches} with varying assumptions on the underlying hard scattering process. One includes complete ${\cal O}(α)$ weak loop corrections with a resummation of leading higher-order terms. Alternatively, an ansatz inspired from S-matrix theory, or several model-independent effective Born cross sections may be convoluted. The program calculates cross sections, forward-backward asymmetries, and for $τ$~pair production also the final-state polarization. Various {\bf interfaces} allow fits to be performed with different sets of free parameters.
