Exact diagonalization study of the two-dimensional t-J-Holstein model

We study by exact diagonalization the two-dimensional t-J-Holstein model near quarter filling by retaining only few phonon modes in momentum space. This truncation allows us to incorporate the full dynamics of the retained phonon modes. The behavior of the kinetic energy, the charge structure factor and other physical quantities, show the presence of a transition from a delocalized phase to a localized phase at a finite value of the electron-phonon coupling. We have also given some indications that the e-ph coupling leads in general to a suppression of the pairing susceptibility at quarter filling.

The susceptibility and excitation spectrum of (VO)$_2$P$_2$O$_7$ in ladder and dimer chain models

We present numerical results for the magnetic susceptibility of a Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin ladder, as a function of temperature and the spin-spin interaction strengths $J_\perp$ and $J_{||}$. These are contrasted with new bulk limit results for the dimer chain. A fit to the experimental susceptibility of the candidate spin-ladder compound vanadyl pyrophosphate, (VO)$_2$P$_2$O$_7$, gives the parameters $J_\perp = 7.82$ meV and $J_{||} = 7.76$ meV. With these values we predict a singlet-triplet energy gap of $E_{gap} = 3.9$ meV, and give a numerical estimate of the ladder triplet dispersion relation $ω(k)$. In contrast, a fit to the dimer chain model leads to $J_1=11.11$ meV and $J_2=8.02$ meV, which predicts a gap of $E_{gap} = 4.9$ meV.

Polaronic Self-Localization Effects in the Three Band Peierls Hubbard Model

We have studied the three-band Peierls-Hubbard model describing the Cu-O layers in high-T$_c$ superconductors by using Lanczos diagonalization and assuming infinite mass for the ions. When the system is doped with one hole, and when the electron-lattice coupling is greater than a critical value, we found that the oxygens around one Cu contract and the hole self-traps forming a lattice and electronic small polaron. The self-trapped hole forms a local singlet analogous to the Zhang-Rice singlet in the undeformed lattice. We also studied the single-particle spectral function and the optical conductivity. We have found that the spectral weight, in general, is similar to that found in previous studies where the coupling with the lattice was absent. There is an anomalous transfer of spectral but, contrary to those studies, it goes to these localized polaronic states. However, this polaronic shift does not seem enough by itself to explain the pinning of the chemical potential observed in real materials. We compare our results to those obtained in inhomogeneous Hartree-Fock calculations and we discuss their relation with experiments.

Superconductivity Near Phase Separation in Models of Correlated Electrons

Numerical and analytical studies of several models of correlated electrons are discussed. Based on exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo techniques, we have found strong indications that the two dimensional t-J model superconducts near phase separation in the regime of quarter-filling density, in agreement with previous results reported by Dagotto and Riera (Phys. Rev. Letters 70, 682 (1993)). At this density the dominant channel is d_{x^2-y^2}, but a novel transition to s-wave superconductivity is observed decreasing the electronic density. In addition, the one band t-U-V model has also been studied using the mean-field approximation that accurately described the spin density wave phase of the repulsive Hubbard model at half-filling. Finally, the two band Hubbard model on a chain is also analyzed. Superconducting correlations near phase separation exist in this model, as it occurs in the t-J model. Based on these nontrivial examples it is $conjectured$ that electronic models tend to have superconducting phases in the vicinity of phase separation.Reciprocally, if it is established that a model that does not phase separate, then its chances of presenting a superconducting phase are considerably reduced.

Bound states of holes in an antiferromagnet

The formation of bound states of holes in an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 background is studied using numerical techniques applied to the ${\rm t-J}$ Hamiltonian on clusters with up to 26 sites. An analysis of the binding energy as a function of cluster size suggests that a two hole bound state is formed for couplings larger than a ``critical'' value ${\rm J/t]_c}$. The symmetry of the bound state is $\dx2y2$. We also observed that its ``quasiparticle'' weight ${\rm Z_{2h}}$ (defined in the text), is finite for all values of the coupling ${\rm J/t}$. Thus, in the region ${\rm J/t \geq J/t]_c}$ the bound state of two holes behaves like a quasiparticle with charge $Q=2e$, spin $S=0$, and $\dx2y2$ internal symmetry. The relation with recent ideas that have suggested the possibility of d-wave pairing in the high temperature cuprate superconductors is briefly discussed.

Spin Gap and Superconductivity in the One-Dimensional t-J Model with Coulomb Repulsion

The one-dimensional t-J model with density-density repulsive interactions is investigated using exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo methods. A short-range repulsion pushes phase separation to larger values of J/t, and leads to a widened precursor region in which a spin gap and strengthened superconducting correlations appear. The correlation exponent is calculated. On the contrary, a long-range repulsion of $1/r$-form suppresses superconductivity in the precursor region.
