Unfocused laser ignition of high-pressure He-H2-O2 combustible mixtures

We report consistent ignition of high-pressure (p > 20-30 bar) hydrogen-oxygen mixtures diluted with helium, using an unfocused Nd:YAG laser. This corresponds to laser irradiances several orders of magnitude below the minimum ignition energies reported in the literature. By placing a mirror inside a cylindrical vessel and filling it up to 100 bar with H2-He or O2-He non-combustible mixtures, we obtain the pressure-dependent absorptivity of the combustible He-H2-O2 mixture. We find no measurable absorption of the laser signal by the medium, for the overall pressure range, to the experimental apparatus sensitivity (about 1% of the laser irradiance). This leads credence to the theory that ignition stems from seed electrons created by autofocusing ionization of dust/impurities in the gas.

The SOPHIE search for northern extrasolar planets. XVI. HD 158259: A compact planetary system in a near-3:2 mean motion resonance chain

Since 2011, the SOPHIE spectrograph has been used to search for Neptunes and super-Earths in the Northern Hemisphere. As part of this observational program, 290 radial velocity measurements of the 6.4 V magnitude star HD 158259 were obtained. Additionally, TESS photometric measurements of this target are available. We present an analysis of the SOPHIE data and compare our results with the output of the TESS pipeline. The radial velocity data, ancillary spectroscopic indices, and ground-based photometric measurements were analyzed with classical and $\ell_1$ periodograms. The stellar activity was modeled as a correlated Gaussian noise and its impact on the planet detection was measured with a new technique. The SOPHIE data support the detection of five planets, each with $m \sin i \approx 6 M_\oplus$, orbiting HD 158259 in 3.4, 5.2, 7.9, 12, and 17.4 days. Though a planetary origin is strongly favored, the 17.4 d signal is classified as a planet candidate due to a slightly lower statistical significance and to its proximity to the expected stellar rotation period. The data also present low frequency variations, most likely originating from a magnetic cycle and instrument systematics. Furthermore, the TESS pipeline reports a significant signal at 2.17 days corresponding to a planet of radius $\approx 1.2 R_\oplus$. A compatible signal is seen in the radial velocities, which confirms the detection of an additional planet and yields a $\approx 2 M_\oplus$ mass estimate. We find a system of five planets and a strong candidate near a 3:2 mean motion resonance chain orbiting HD 158259. The planets are found to be outside of the two and three body resonances.

Optimal Load Restoration in Active Distribution Networks Complying with Starting Transients of Induction Motors

Large horsepower induction motors play a critical role as industrial drives in production facilities. The operational safety of distribution networks during the starting transients of these motor loads is a critical concern for the operators. In this paper, an analytical and convex optimization model is derived representing the starting transients of the induction motor in a semi-static fashion. This model is used to find the optimal energization sequence of different loads (static and motor loads) following an outage in a distribution network. The optimization problem includes the optimal control of the converter-based DGs and autotransformers that are used for the induction motor starting. These models together with the semi-static model of the induction motor are integrated into a relaxed power flow formulation resulting in a Mixed-Integer Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) problem. This formulation represents the transient operational limits that are imposed by different protection devices both in the motor side and network side. The functionality of the proposed optimization problem is evaluated in the case of a large-scale test study and under different simulation scenarios. The feasibility and accuracy of the optimization results are validated using I) off-line time-domain simulations, and II) a Power Hardware-In-the-Loop experiment.

Oblivious transfer based on single-qubit rotations

We present a bit-string quantum oblivious transfer protocol based on single-qubit rotations. Our protocol is built upon a previously proposed quantum public-key protocol and its practical security relies on the laws of Quantum Mechanics. Practical security is reflected in the fact that, due to technological limitations, the receiver (Bob) of the transferred bit-string is restricted to performing only "few-qubit" coherent measurements. We also present a single-bit oblivious transfer based on the proposed bit-string protocol. The protocol can be implemented with current technology based on optics.

Quantum walks public key cryptographic system

Quantum Cryptography is a rapidly developing field of research that benefits from the properties of Quantum Mechanics in performing cryptographic tasks. Quantum walks are a powerful model for quantum computation and very promising for quantum information processing. In this paper, we present a quantum public-key cryptographic system based on quantum walks. In particular, in the proposed protocol the public key is given by a quantum state generated by performing a quantum walk. We show that the protocol is secure and analyze the complexity of public-key generation and encryption/decryption procedures.

The 12 prophets dataset

The "Ajeijadinho 3D" project is an initiative supported by the University of São Paulo (Museum of Science and Dean of Culture and Extension), which involves the 3D digitization of art works of Brazilian sculptor Antonio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho. The project made use of advanced acquisition and processing of 3D meshes for preservation and dissemination of the cultural heritage. The dissemination occurs through a Web portal, so that the population has the opportunity to meet the art works in detail using 3D visualization and interaction. The portal address is http://www.aleijadinho3d.icmc.usp.br. The 3D acquisitions were conducted over a week at the end of July 2013 in the cities of Ouro Preto, MG, Brazil and Congonhas do Campo, MG, Brazil. The scanning was done with a special equipment supplied by company Leica Geosystems, which allowed the work to take place at distances between 10 and 30 meters, defining a non-invasive procedure, simplified logistics, and without the need for preparation or isolation of the sites. In Ouro Preto, we digitized the churches of Francisco of Assis, Our Lady of Carmo, and Our Lady of Mercy; in Congonhas do Campo we scanned the entire Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos and his 12 prophets. Once scanned, the art works went through a long process of preparation, which required careful handling of meshes done by experts from the University of São Paulo in partnership with company Imprimate.

Transverse momentum dependence in gluon distribution and fragmentation functions

We investigate the twist two gluon distribution functions for spin 1/2 hadrons, emphasizing intrinsic transverse momentum of the gluons. These functions are relevant in leading order in the inverse hard scale in scattering processes such as inclusive leptoproduction or Drell-Yan scattering, or more general in hard processes in which at least two hadrons are involved. They show up in azimuthal asymmetries. For future estimates of such observables, we discuss specific bounds on these functions.

Distribution and fragmentation functions in a spectator model

Quark distribution and spectator functions are estimated in a diquark spectator model. The representation of the functions in terms of non-local operators together with the rather simple model allow estimates for the yet experimentally undetermined functions, like the polarized fragmentation functions or higher twist functions.

Modelling quark distribution and fragmentation functions

The representation of quark distribution and fragmentation functions in terms of non-local operators is combined with a simple spectator model. This allows us to estimate these functions for the nucleon and the pion ensuring correct crossing and support properties. We give estimates for the unpolarized functions as well as for the polarized ones and for subleading (higher twist) functions. Furthermore we can study several relations that are consequences of Lorentz invariance and of C, P, and T invariance of the strong interactions.

Quark transverse momentum in hard scattering processes

The role of transverse momentum of quarks in semi-inclusive leptoproduction will be discussed. It involves generalized distribution and fragmentation functions which depend on both the longitudinal lightcone momentum fraction of the quarks and on the transverse momentum. Constraints on these functions and relations between them arise as a consequence of the QCD equation of motion for the quark fields, Lorentz invariance and of C, P, and T invariance of the strong interactions. Experimentally one has access to the functions for instance in measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hard processes.

Modelling distribution functions and fragmentation functions

We present examples for the calculation of the distribution and fragmentation functions using the representation in terms of non-local matrix elements of quark field operators. As specific examples, we use a simple spectator model to estimate the leading twist quark distribution functions and the fragmentation functions for a quark into a nucleon or a pion.

Loop Space Hamiltonians And Field Theory Of Non-Critical Strings

We consider the loop space representation of multi-matrix models. Explaining the origin of a time variable through stochastic quantization we make contact with recent proposals of Ishibashi and Kawai. We demonstrate how collective field theory with its loop space interactions generates a field theory of non-critical strings.

The Exact $S$-matrix of the Deformed $c=1$ Matrix Model

We consider the $c=1$ matrix model deformed by the operator ${1\over 2} M\TrΦ^{-2}$, which was conjectured by Jevicki and Yoneya to describe a two-dimensional black hole of mass $M$. We calculate the exact non-perturbative $S$-matrix and show that all the amplitudes involving an odd number of particles vanish at least to all orders of perturbation theory. We conjecture that these amplitudes vanish non-perturbatively and prove this for the $2n \to 1$ scattering. For the 2-- and 4--particle amplitudes we give some leading terms of the perturbative expansion.
