The N=126 Factory: A New Multi-Nucleon Transfer Reaction Facility

Multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reactions between two heavy ions offer an effective method of producing heavy, neutron-rich nuclei that cannot currently be accessed efficiently using traditional production techniques. These nuclei are important for understanding many astrophysical phenomena, such as the formation of the r-process $A\sim 195$ abundance peak. The N=126 Factory currently commissioning at Argonne National Laboratory's ATLAS facility will make use of these reactions to allow for the study of these nuclei. To convert MNT reaction products, which have a wide angular distribution, into a collimated, bunched beam suitable for experiments, a series of apparatus will be used. These start with a large-volume gas catcher for stopping the reaction products, which are then extracted through a radiofrequency quadrupole ion guide, undergo preliminary dipole magnetic separation, cooling and bunching in a Cooler-Buncher, and final separation using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass separator, before final delivery to experimental systems.

Role of chiral two-body currents in $^6$Li magnetic properties in light of a new precision measurement with the relative self-absorption technique

A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited $0^+_1$ state of $^6$Li using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of $\Gamma_{\gamma, 0^+_1 \to 1^+_1} = 8.17(14)_\mathrm{stat.}(11)_\mathrm{syst.} \mathrm{eV}$ provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. This enables a precision test of the impact of two-body currents that enter at next-to-leading order.

The X-Array and SATURN: A new decay-spectroscopy station for CARIBU

A new decay-spectroscopy station has been commissioned for experiments with low-energy, fission-fragment radioactive beams from the CARIBU ion source. The new set-up consists of the 'X-array', a highly-efficient array of HPGe clover detectors, and 'SATURN' (Scintillator And Tape Using Radioactive Nuclei), a plastic scintillator detector combined with a tape-transport system for detection of beta particles and removal of long-lived isobaric decay products.

Enhanced electroweak penguin amplitude in B-->VV decays

We discuss a novel electromagnetic penguin contribution to the transverse helicity amplitudes in B decays to two vector mesons, which is enhanced by two powers of mB/Lambda relative to the standard penguin amplitudes. This leads to unique polarization signatures in penguin-dominated decay modes such as B-->rho K* similar to polarization effects in the radiative decay B-->K*gamma, and offers new opportunities to probe the magnitude and chirality of flavour-changing neutral current couplings to photons.

SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics: two-loop corrections to the pressure

We compute the two-loop corrections to the thermodynamical pressure of an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory being in its electric phase. Our results prove that the one-loop evolution of the effective gauge coupling constant is reliable for any practical purpose. We thus establish the validity of the picture of almost noninteracting thermal quasiparticles in the electric phase. Implications of our results for the explanation of the large-angle anomaly in the power spectrum of temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background are discussed.
