A heterogeneous lithosphere on Venus

Venus is 95% the size of Earth and probably has a similar composition and internal energy, but the geodynamical mechanism governing its internal thermal evolution remains controversial. Much of the planet surface (77%) is covered by volcanic plains, characterized by basaltic flood lavas, some of which emanate from volcanoes whereas others have no identifiable sources. Here we show that the volcanic plains contain three provinces with statistically different properties. Apart from the plains around the Beta-Atla-Themis region characterized by a thick crust with a wide range of effective elastic lithospheric thickness (Te), the remaining volcanic plains (61% of the surface) display a dichotomous nature, with the northern plains showing a thinner lithosphere and twice the number of volcanoes per unit area compared to the southern plains. These global-scale differences imply a complex geodynamical regime, with large lateral variations in mechanical properties and/or geodynamical processes, which must be addressed by competing models of mantle convection and planetary evolution.

A nonlinear PPH-type reconstruction based on equilateral triangles

In this paper we introduce a new nonlinear reconstruction operator over two dimensional triangularized domains with equilateral triangles. We focus on the local definition of the operator. The ideas behind this definition come from some basic properties of the Harmonic mean of three positive values. We prove some results regarding the approximation properties of the operator and we carry out some numerical tests giving evidence of the avoidance of any Gibbs effects.

Search for new physics via baryon EDM at LHC

Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles provide powerful probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. We propose to search for the EDM of strange and charm baryons at LHC, extending the ongoing experimental program on the neutron, muon, atoms, molecules and light nuclei. The EDM of strange $\Lambda$ baryons, selected from weak decays of charm baryons produced in pp collisions at LHC, can be determined by studying the spin precession in the magnetic field of the detector tracking system. A test of CPT symmetry can be performed by measuring the magnetic dipole moment of $\Lambda$ and $\overline{\Lambda}$ baryons. For short-lived $\Lambda_c^+$ and $\Xi_c^+$ baryons, to be produced in a fixed-target experiment using the 7 TeV LHC beam and channeled in a bent crystal, the spin precession is induced by the intense electromagnetic field between crystal atomic planes. The experimental layout based on the LHCb detector and the expected sensitivities in the coming years are discussed.

On four state Hard Core Models on the Cayley Tree

We consider a nearest-neighbor four state hard-core (HC) model on the homogeneous Cayley tree of order $k$. The Hamiltonian of the model is considered on a set of "admissible" configurations. Admissibility is specified through a graph with four vertices. We first exhibit conditions (on the graph and on the parameters) under which the model has a unique Gibbs measure. Next we turn to some specific cases. Namely, first we study, in the case of a particular graph (the diamond), translation-invariant and periodic Gibbs measures. We provide in both cases the equations of the transition lines separating uniqueness from non--uniqueness regimes. Finally the same is done for "fertile" graphs, the so--called stick, gun, and key (here only translation invariant states are taken into account).

Optical and near-infrared observations of SN 2011dh - The first 100 days

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry and spectroscopy of the Type IIb supernova (SN) 2011dh for the first 100 days. We complement our extensive dataset with SWIFT ultra-violet (UV) and Spitzer mid-infrared (MIR) data to build a UV to MIR bolometric lightcurve using both photometric and spectroscopic data. Hydrodynamical modelling of the SN based on this bolometric lightcurve have been presented in Bersten (2012). We find that the absorption minimum for the hydrogen lines is never seen below ~11000 km/s but approaches this value as the lines get weaker. This suggests that the interface between the helium core and hydrogen rich envelope is located near this velocity in agreement with the Bersten et al. (2012) He4R270 ejecta model. Spectral modelling of the hydrogen lines using this ejecta model supports the conclusion and we find a hydrogen mass of 0.01-0.04 solar masses to be consistent with the observed spectral evolution. We estimate that the photosphere reaches the helium core at 5-7 days whereas the helium lines appear between ~10 and ~15 days, close to the photosphere and then move outward in velocity until ~40 days. This suggests that increasing non-thermal excitation due to decreasing optical depth for the gamma-rays is driving the early evolution of these lines. We also provide and discuss pre- and post-explosion observations of the SN site which shows a reduction by 75 percent in flux at the position of the yellow supergiant coincident with SN 2011dh. The B, V and r band decline rates of 0.0073, 0.0090 and 0.0053 mag/day respectively are consistent with the remaining flux being emitted by the SN. Hence we find that the star was indeed the progenitor of SN 2011dh as previously suggested by Maund et al. (2011) and which is also consistent with the results from the hydrodynamical modelling.

New Phase transitions of the Ising model on Cayley trees

We show that the nearest neighbors Ising model on the Cayley tree exhibits new temperature driven phase transitions. These transitions holds at various inverse temperatures different from the critical one. They are depicted by a change in the number of Gibbs states as well as by a drastic change of the behavior of free energies at these new transition points.

Zebra-percolation on Cayley trees

We consider Bernoulli (bond) percolation with parameter $p$ on the Cayley tree of order $k$. We introduce the notion of zebra-percolation that is percolation by paths of alternating open and closed edges. In contrast with standard percolation with critical threshold at $p_c= 1/k$, we show that zebra-percolation occurs between two critical values $p_{{\rm c},1}$ and $p_{{\rm c},2}$ (explicitly given). We provide the specific formula of zebra-percolation function.

On free energies of the Ising model on the Cayley tree

We present, for the Ising model on the Cayley tree, some explicit formulae of the free energies (and entropies) according to boundary conditions (b.c.). They include translation-invariant, periodic, Dobrushin-like b.c., as well as those corresponding to (recently discovered) weakly periodic Gibbs states. The later are defined through a partition of the tree that induces a 4-edge-coloring. We compute the density of each color.

On $p$-adic Gibbs Measures for Hard Core Model on a Cayley Tree

In this paper we consider a nearest-neighbor $p$-adic hard core (HC) model, with fugacity $λ$, on a homogeneous Cayley tree of order $k$ (with $k + 1$ neighbors). We focus on $p$-adic Gibbs measures for the HC model, in particular on $p$-adic "splitting" Gibbs measures generating a $p$-adic Markov chain along each path on the tree. We show that the $p$-adic HC model is completely different from real HC model: For a fixed $k$ we prove that the $p$-adic HC model may have a splitting Gibbs measure only if $p$ divides $2^k-1$. Moreover if $p$ divides $2^k-1$ but does not divide $k+2$ then there exists unique translational invariant $p$-adic Gibbs measure. We also study $p$-adic periodic splitting Gibbs measures and show that the above model admits only translational invariant and periodic with period two (chess-board) Gibbs measures. For $p\geq 7$ (resp. $p=2,3,5$) we give necessary and sufficient (resp. necessary) conditions for the existence of a periodic $p$-adic measure. For k=2 a $p$-adic splitting Gibbs measures exists if and only if p=3, in this case we show that if $λ$ belongs to a $p$-adic ball of radius 1/27 then there are precisely two periodic (non translational invariant) $p$-adic Gibbs measures. We prove that a $p$-adic Gibbs measure is bounded if and only if $p\ne 3$.

Global Partial Density of States: Statistics and Localization Length in Quasi-one Dimensional disordered systems

We study the distributions functions for global partial density of states (GPDOS) in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) disordered wires as a function of disorder parameter from metal to insulator. We consider two different models for disordered Q1D wire: a set of two dimensional $δ$ potentials with an arbitrary signs and strengths placed randomly, and a tight-binding Hamiltonian with several modes and on-site disorder. The Green functions (GF) for two models were calculated analytically and it was shown that the poles of GF can be presented as determinant of the rank $N\times N$, where $N$ is the number of scatters. We show that the variances of partial GPDOS in the metal to insulator crossover regime are crossing. The critical value of disorder $w_c$ where we have crossover can be used for calculation a localization length in Q1D systems.

Oscillator Strengths and Predissociation Rates for Rydberg Transitions in 12C16O, 13C16O, and 13C18O Involving the E 1Pi, B 1Sigma+, and W 1Pi States

One of the processes controlling the interstellar CO abundance and the ratio of its isotopologues is photodissociation. Accurate oscillator strengths and predissociation rates for Rydberg transitions are needed for modeling this process. We present results on absorption from the E ^1Pi-X ^1Sigma^+ (1-0) and B ^1Sigma^+-X ^1Sigma^+ (6-0) bands at 1051 and 1002 Å, respectively, and the vibrational progression W ^1Pi-X ^1Sigma^+ (v'-0) bands with v' = 0 to 3 at 972, 956, 941, and 925 Å, respectively. The corresponding spectra were acquired at the high resolution (R ~ 30,000) SU5 beam line at the Super ACO Synchrotron in Orsay, France. Spectra were obtained for the ^12C^16O, ^13C^16O, and ^13C^18O isotopologues. These represent the most complete set of measurements available. Comparison is made with earlier results, both empirical and theoretical. While earlier determinations of oscillator strengths based on absorption from synchrotron radiation tend to be somewhat smaller than ours, the suite of measurements from a variety of techniques agree for the most part considering the mutual uncertainties. For the bands studied here, their relative weakness, or their significant line widths arising from predissociation, minimizes potential problems from large optical depths at line center in absorption measurements. Predissociating line widths could generally be extracted from the spectra thanks to the profile simulations used in the analysis. In many cases, these simulations allowed us to consider e and f parity levels separately and to determine the dependence of the width on rotational quantum number, J. Our results are consistent with earlier determinations, especially the widths inferred from laser experiments.

The Detection of Circumnuclear X-ray Emission from the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 3516

We present the first high-resolution, X-ray image of the circumnuclear regions of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, using the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). All three of the CXO observations reported were performed with one of the two grating assemblies in place, and here we restrict our analysis to undispersed photons (i.e. those detected in the zeroth-order). A previously-unknown X-ray source is detected approx 6 arcsec (1.1 h_{75}^{-1} kpc) NNE of the nucleus (position angle approx 29 degrees) which we designate CXOU 110648.1+723412. Its spectrum can be characterized as a power law with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.8--2.6, or as thermal emission with a temperature kT~0.7--3 keV. Assuming a location within NGC 3516, isotropic emission implies a luminosity L ~ 2--8e39 h_{75}^{-2} erg s^{-1} in the 0.4--2 keV band. If due to a single point source, the object is super-Eddington for a 1.4 M_sun neutron star. However, multiple sources or a small, extended source cannot be excluded using the current data. Large-scale extended X-ray emission is also detected out to ~10 arcsec (~1.7 h_{75}^{-1} kpc) from the nucleus to the NE and SW, and is approximately aligned with the morphologies of the radio emission and extended narrow emission line region (ENLR). The mean luminosity of this emission is 1--5e37 h_{75}^{-2} erg s^{-1} arcsec^{-2}, in the 0.4--2 keV band. Unfortunately the current data cannot usefully constrain its spectrum. These results are consistent with earlier suggestions of circumnuclear X-ray emission in NGC 3516. If the extended emission is due to scattering of the nuclear X-ray continuum, then the pressure in the X-ray emitting gas is at least two orders of magnitude too small to provide the confining medium for the ENLR clouds.

The Resolved Narrow Line Region in NGC4151

We present slitless spectra of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) in NGC4151 from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on HST, and investigate the kinematics and physical conditions of the emission line clouds in this region. Using medium resolution (~0.5 Angstrom) slitless spectra at two roll angles and narrow band undispersed images, we have mapped the NLR velocity field from 1.2 kpc to within 13 pc (H_o=75 km/s/Mpc) of the nucleus. The inner biconical cloud distribution exhibits recessional velocities relative to the nucleus to the NE and approaching velocities to the SW of the nucleus. We find evidence for at least two kinematic components in the NLR. One kinematic component is characterized by Low Velocities and Low Velocity Dispersions (LVLVD clouds: |v| < 400 km/s, and Delta_v < 130 km/s). This population extends through the NLR and their observed kinematics may be gravitationally associated with the host galaxy. Another component is characterized by High Velocities and High Velocity Dispersions (HVHVD clouds: 400 < |v| < ~1700 km/s, Delta_v > 130 km/s). This set of clouds is located within 1.1 arcsec (~70pc) of the nucleus and has radial velocities which are too high to be gravitational in origin, but show no strong correlation between velocity or velocity dispersion and the position of the radio knots. Outflow scenarios will be discussed as the driving mechanism for these HVHVD clouds.
