Optical Kagome lattice for ultra-cold atoms with nearest neighbor interactions

We propose a scheme to implement an optical Kagome lattice for ultra-cold atoms with controllable s-wave interactions between nearest neighbor sites and a gauge potential. The atoms occupy three different internal atomic levels with electromagnetically-induced coupling between the levels. We show that by appropriately shifting the triangular lattice potentials, experienced by atoms in different levels, the Kagome lattice can be realized using only two standing waves, generating a highly frustrated quantum system for the atoms.

Nonlinear resonances in δ-kicked Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the Quantum Resonance (QR) regime of a periodically kicked atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that the clearest indicator of the nonlinear dynamics is a surprisingly abrupt cut-off which appears on the main "Talbot time" QR. We show that this is due and excitation path combining both Beliaev and Landau processes, with some analogies to nonlinear self-trapping. Investigation of dynamical instability reveals further symptoms of nonlinearity such as a regime of exponential oscillations.

Manipulating atoms in an optical lattice: Fractional fermion number and its optical quantum measurement

We provide a detailed analysis of our previously proposed scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 180401, (2002)] to engineer the profile of the hopping amplitudes for atomic gases in a 1D optical lattice so that the particle number becomes fractional. We consider a constructed system of a dilute two-species gas of fermionic atoms where the two components are coupled via a coherent electromagnetic field with a topologically nontrivial phase profile. We show both analytically and numerically how the resulting atomic Hamiltonian in a prepared dimerized optical lattice with a defect in the pattern of alternating hopping amplitudes exhibits a fractional fermion number. In particular, in the low-energy limit we demonstrate the equivalence of the atomic Hamiltonian to a relativistic Dirac Hamiltonian describing fractionalization in quantum field theory. Expanding on our earlier argument [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 150404 (2003)] we show how the fractional eigenvalues of the particle number operator can be detected via light scattering. In particular, we show how scattering of far-off resonant light can convey information about the counting statistics of the atoms in an optical lattice, including state-selective atom density profiles and atom number fluctuations. Optical detection could provide a truly quantum mechanical measurement of the particle number fractionalization in a dilute atomic gas.

Dynamical and energetic instabilities in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study dynamical and energetic instabilities in the transport properties of Bloch waves for atomic multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices in the tight-binding limit. We obtain stability criteria analytically, as a function of superfluid velocities and interaction parameters, in several cases for two-component and spinor condensates. In the two-species case we find that the presence of the other condensate component can stabilize the superfluid flow of an otherwise unstable condensate and that the free space dynamical miscibility condition of the two species can be reversed by tuning the superfluid flow velocities. In spin-1 condensates, we find the steady-state Bloch wave solutions and characterize their stability criteria. We find generally more regions of dynamical instability arise for the polar than for the ferromagnetic solutions. In the presence of magnetic Zeeman shifts, we find a richer variety of condensate solutions and find that the linear Zeeman shift can stabilize the superfluid flow in several cases of interest.

Quantum dynamics in splitting a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by an optical lattice: Truncated Wigner approximation

We study the splitting of a harmonically trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate when we continuously turn up an optical lattice (or a double-well) potential. As the lattice height is increased, quantum fluctuations of atoms are enhanced. The resulting nonequilibrium dynamics of the fragmentation process of the condensate, the loss of the phase coherence of atoms along the lattice, and the reduced atom number fluctuations in individual lattice sites are stochastically studied within the truncated Wigner approximation. We perform a detailed study of the effects of temperature and lattice height on atom dynamics, and investigate the validity of the classical Gross-Pitaevskii equation in optical lattices. We find the atom number squeezing to saturate in deep lattices due to nonadiabaticity in turning up of the lattice potential that is challenging to avoid in experiments when the occupation number of the lattice sites is large, making it difficult to produce strongly number squeezed (or the Mott insulator) states with large filling factors. We also investigate some general numerical properties of the truncated Wigner approximation.

Dissipative quantum dynamics of bosonic atoms in a shallow 1D optical lattice

We theoretically study the dipolar motion of bosonic atoms in a very shallow, strongly confined 1D optical lattice using the parameters of the recent experiment [Fertig et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 220402 (2005)]. We find that, due to momentum uncertainty, a small, but non-negligible, atom population occupies the unstable velocity region of the corresponding classical dynamics, resulting in the observed dissipative atom transport. This population is generated even in a static vapor, due to quantum fluctuations which are enhanced by the lattice and the confinement, and is not notably affected by the motion of atoms or finite temperature.

Engineering vortex rings and systems for controlled studies of vortex interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study controlled methods of preparing vortex configurations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and their use in the studies of fundamental vortex scattering, reconnection processes and superfluid sound emission. We explore techniques of imprinting closed vortex rings by means of coherently driving internal atomic transitions with electromagnetic fields which exhibit singular phase profiles. In particular, we show that a vortex ring can be prepared in a controlled way by two focused co-propagating Gaussian laser beams. More complex vortex systems may also be imprinted by directly superposing simpler field configurations or by programming their phase profiles on optical holograms. This provides the controlled method of studying vortex reconnections in atomic superfluids. We analyze specific examples of two merging vortex rings in a trapped two-component Rb-87 condensate. We calculate the radiated sound energy in the vortex ring reconnection process and show that the vortex relaxation and the re-distribution of sound energy can be controlled by the imprinting process. The energy is first concentrated towards the trap center and later emitted outwards as sound and transformed to surface excitations. As another such technique, we study creating pairs of 2D point vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates using a 'light roadblock' in ultra-slow light propagation. We show how this can be used to study vortex collisions in compressible superfluids and how these collisions result in energy dissipation via phonons and, sometimes, annihilation of vortex pairs.

Stable particlelike solitons with multiply-quantized vortex lines in Bose-Einstein condensates

We show that a multiply-quantized vortex line core can be energetically stable in a harmonically trapped two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The structure, in which the condensate component with the vortex line is surrounded by the second component forming a vortex ring, can be identified as a particlelike Skyrmion with a multiply-quantized winding number, and closely resembles cosmic vortons.

Dirac monopoles and dipoles in ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate a radial spin hedgehog, analogous to the Dirac monopole, in an optically trapped atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. By joining together a monopole-antimonopole pair, we may form a vortex line with free ends. We numerically simulate the three-dimensional dynamics and imaginary time relaxation of these structures to nonsingular textures and show they can be observable for realistic experimental parameters.

Monopole core instability and Alice rings in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We show how the length scale hierarchy, resulting from different interaction strengths in an optically-trapped spin-1 sodium-23 Bose-Einstein condensate, can lead to intriguing core deformations in singular topological defects. In particular, a point defect can be unstable with respect to the formation of a stable half-quantum vortex ring (an Alice ring), providing a realistic scheme to use dissipation as a sophisticated state engineering tool. We compute the threshold for stability of the point monopole, which is beyond the current experimental regime.

Pulsed Raman output coupler for an atom laser

We theoretically study a pulsed stimulated two-photon Raman outcoupler for an atom laser using a full three-dimensional description. A finite-temperature trapped Bose-condensed atomic gas is treated self-consistently by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations. The model is closely related to a recent experiment on optical outcoupling [E.W. Hagley et al., Science 283, 1706 (1999)]. We analyze the momentum distribution of the output atoms and show how the output beam may be used as a probe of the quantum state for the trapped atomic gas and how it could be engineered and controlled in a nonlinear way.

Energetically stable particle-like Skyrmions in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

We numerically show that a topologically nontrivial 3D Skyrmion can be energetically stable in a trapped two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, for the parameters of Rb-87 condensate experiments. The separate conservation of the two atomic species can stabilize the Skyrmion against shrinking to zero size, while drift of the Skyrmion due to the trap-induced density gradient can be prevented by rotation or by a laser potential.

Creating vortex rings and three-dimensional skyrmions in Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a method of generating a vortex ring in a Bose-Einstein condensate by means of electromagnetically-induced atomic transitions. Some remnant population of atoms in a second internal state remains within the toroidal trap formed by the mean field repulsion of the vortex ring. This population can be removed, or it can be made to flow around the torus (i.e. within the vortex ring). If this flow has unit topological winding number, the entire structure formed by the two condensates is an example of a three-dimensional skyrmion texture.

Schrödinger cat state of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

We consider a weakly interacting coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. We show by means of stochastic simulations that the system could possibly be driven to an entangled macroscopic superposition state or a Schrödinger cat state by means of a continuous quantum measurement process.

Scattering of light and atoms in a Fermi-Dirac gas with BCS pairing

We theoretically study the optical properties of a Fermi-Dirac gas in the presence of a superfluid state. We calculate the leading quantum-statistical corrections to the standard column density result of the electric susceptibility. We also consider the Bragg diffraction of atoms by means of light-stimulated transitions of photons between two intersecting laser beams. Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing between atoms in different internal levels magnifies incoherent scattering processes. The absorption linewidth of a Fermi-Dirac gas is broadened and shifted. Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing introduces a collisional local-field shift that may dramatically dominate the Lorentz-Lorenz shift. For the case of the Bragg spectroscopy the static structure function may be significantly increased due to superfluidity in the nearforward scattering.

Interference of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a hard-wall trap: Formation of vorticity

We theoretically study the coherent expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a confining impenetrable hard-wall potential. The nonlinear dynamics of the macroscopically coherent matter field results in rich and complex spatio-temporal interference patterns demonstrating the formation of vorticity and solitonlike structures, and the fragmentation of the condensate into coherently coupled pieces.

Optical response of superfluid state in dilute atomic Fermi-Dirac gases

We theoretically study the propagation of light in a Fermi-Dirac gas in the presence of a superfluid state. BCS pairing between atoms in different hyperfine levels may significantly increase the optical linewidth and line shift of a quantum degenerate Fermi-Dirac gas and introduce a local-field correction that, under certain conditions, dramatically dominates over the Lorentz-Lorenz shift. These optical properties could possibly unambiguously sign the presence of the superfluid state and determine the value of the BCS order parameter.

Optical linewidth of a low density Fermi-Dirac gas

We study propagation of light in a Fermi-Dirac gas at zero temperature. We analytically obtain the leading density correction to the optical linewidth. This correction is a direct consequence of the quantum statistical correlations of atomic positions that modify the optical interactions between the atoms at small interatomic separations. The gas exhibits a dramatic line narrowing already at very low densities.
