The transverse momentum dependence of charged kaon Bose-Einstein correlations in the SELEX experiment

We report on the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600~GeV/{\it c} $Σ^-$, $π^-$ and 540~GeV/{\it c} $p$ beams from the SELEX~(E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, $k_T$, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $λ$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types.

Electron muon identification by atmospheric shower and electron beam in a new concept of an EAS detector

We present results demonstrating the time resolution and $μ$/e separation capabilities with a new concept of an EAS detector capable for measurements of cosmic rays arriving with large zenith angles. This kind of detector has been designed to be a part of a large area (several square kilometers) surface array designed to measure Ultra High Energy (10-200 PeV) $τ$ neutrinos using the Earth-skimming technique. A criteria to identify electron-gammas is also shown and the particle identification capability is tested by measurements in coincidence with the KASKADE-GRANDE experiment in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Report of the Snowmass 2013 energy frontier QCD working group

This is the summary report of the energy frontier QCD working group prepared for Snowmass 2013. We review the status of tools, both theoretical and experimental, for understanding the strong interactions at colliders. We attempt to prioritize important directions that future developments should take. Most of the efforts of the QCD working group concentrate on proton-proton colliders, at 14 TeV as planned for the next run of the LHC, and for 33 and 100 TeV, possible energies of the colliders that will be necessary to carry on the physics program started at 14 TeV. We also examine QCD predictions and measurements at lepton-lepton and lepton-hadron colliders, and in particular their ability to improve our knowledge of strong coupling constant and parton distribution functions.

Renaissance of the ~1 TeV Fixed-Target Program

This document describes the physics potential of a new fixed-target program based on a ~1 TeV proton source. Two proton sources are potentially available in the future: the existing Tevatron at Fermilab, which can provide 800 GeV protons for fixed-target physics, and a possible upgrade to the SPS at CERN, called SPS+, which would produce 1 TeV protons on target. In this paper we use an example Tevatron fixed-target program to illustrate the high discovery potential possible in the charm and neutrino sectors. We highlight examples which are either unique to the program or difficult to accomplish at other venues.

Confirmation of the Double Charm Baryon Xi_cc+ via its Decay to p D+ K-

We observes a signal for the double charm baryon Xi_cc+ in the charged decay mode Xi_cc+ -> p D+ K- to complement the previously reported decay Xi_cc+ -> Lambda_c K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment (E781) at Fermilab. In this new decay mode we observe an excess of 5.62 events over an expected background estimated by event mixing to be 1.38+/-0.13 events. The Poisson probability that a background fluctuation can produce the apparent signal is less than 6.4E-4. The observed mass of this state is (3518+/-3)MeV/c^2, consistent with the published result. Averaging the two results gives a mass of (3518.7+/-1.7)MeV/c^2. The observation of this new weak decay mode confirms the previous SELEX suggestion that this state is a double charm baryon. The relative branching ratio Gamma(Xi_cc+ -> pD+K-)/Gamma(Xi_cc+ -> Lambda_c K- pi+) = 0.36+/-0.21.

Recent Results from SELEX

The SELEX experiment (E781) is 3-stage magnetic spectrometer for the study of charm hadroproduction at large xF using 600 Gev Sigma-, pi- and p beams. New precise measurements of the Lambda_c, D0, and Ds lifetimes are presented. We also report results on Lambda_c and Ds production by Sigma-, pi- and p beams at xF>0.2. The data agree with expectations from color-drag models to explain charm particle/antiparticle production asymmetries.

First Charm Hadroproduction Results from SELEX

The SELEX experiment (E781) at Fermilab is a 3-stage magnetic spectrometer for the high statistics study of charm hadroproduction out to large x_F using 600 GeV Sigma^-, p and pi beams. The main features of the spectrometer are: high precision silicon vertex system, broad-coverage particle identification with TRD and RICH, 3-stage lead glass photon detector. Preliminary results on differences in hadroproduction characteristics of charm mesons and Lambda_c^+ for x_F>0.3 are reported. For baryon beams there is a striking asymmetry in the production of baryons compared to antibaryons. Leading particle effects for all incident hadrons are discussed.
