Entanglement structure of the Hubbard model in momentum space

We study the properties of the ground states of the one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models at half filling and moderate doping using entanglement-based measures, which we calculate numerically using the momentum-space density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). In particular, we investigate quantities such as the single-site entropy and two-site mutual information of single-particle momentum states as well as the behavior of the bipartite subsystem entropy for partitions in momentum space. The distribution of these quantities in momentum space gives insight into the fundamental nature of the ground state, insight that can be used to make contact with weak-coupling-based analytic approaches and to optimize numerical methods, the momentum-space DMRG in particular. We study the site and subsystem entropies as a function of interaction strength $U$ and system size. In both the one- and two-dimensional cases, we find that the subsystem entropy scales proportionally to $U^2$ for weak $U$ and proportionally to volume. Nevertheless, the optimized momentum-space DMRG can provide variationally accurate results for the two-dimensional Hubbard model at weak coupling for moderate system sizes.

Interplay between exotic superfluidity and magnetism in a chain of four-component ultracold atoms

We investigate the spin-polarized chain of ultracold fermionic atoms with spin-3/2 described by the fermionic Hubbard model with SU(4) symmetric attractive interaction. The competition of bound pairs, trions, quartets and unbound atoms is studied analytically and by density matrix renormalization group simulations. We find several distinct states where bound particles coexist with the ferromagnetic state of unpaired fermions. In particular, an exotic inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-type superfluid of quartets in a magnetic background of uncorrelated atoms is found for weaker interactions. We show that the system can be driven from this quartet-FFLO state to a molecular state of localized quartets which is also reflected in the static structure factor. For strong enough coupling, spatial segregation between molecular crystals and ferromagnetic liquids emerges due to the large effective mass of the composite particles.

Entanglement patterns and generalized correlation functions in quantum many body systems

We introduce transition operators that in a given basis of the single-site states of a many-body system have a single non-vanishing matrix element and introduce their correlation functions. We show that they fall into groups that decay with the same rate. The mutual information defined in terms of the von Neumann entropy between two sites is given in terms of these so-called generalized correlation functions. We confirm numerically that the long-distance decay of the mutual information follows the square of that of the most slowly decaying generalized correlation function. The main advantage of our procedure is that, in order to identify the most relevant physical processes, there is no need to know a priori the nature of the ordering in the system, i.e., no need to explicitly construct particular physical correlation functions. We explore the behavior of the mutual information and the generalized correlation functions for conformally invariant models and for the SU($n$) Hubbard model with $n=2,3,4$, and 5, which are, in general, not conformally invariant. In this latter case, we show that for filling $f=1/q$ and $q<n$, the ground state consists of highly entangled $q$-site units that are further entangled by single bonds. In addition, we extend the picture of the two-site mutual information and the corresponding generalized correlation functions to the $n$-site case.

Phase Separation of Superfluids in the Chain of Four-Component Ultracold Atoms

We investigate the competition of various exotic superfluid states in a chain of spin-polarized ultracold fermionic atoms with hyperfine spin $F = 3/2$ and s-wave contact interactions. We show that the ground state is an exotic inhomogeneous mixture in which two distinct superfluid phases --- spin-carrying pairs and singlet quartets --- form alternating domains in an extended region of the parameter space.

Emergence of Quintet Superfluidity in the Chain of Partially Polarized Spin-3/2 Ultracold Atom

The system of ultracold atoms with hyperfine spin $F=3/2$ might be unstable against the formation of quintet pairs if the interaction is attractive in the quintet channel. We have investigated the behavior of correlation functions in a model including only s-wave interactions at quarter filling by large-scale density-matrix renormalization-group simulations. We show that the correlations of quintet pairs become quasi-long-ranged, when the system is partially polarized, leading to the emergence of various mixed superfluid phases in which BCS-like pairs carrying different magnetic moment coexist.

The Role of the Exchange Interaction in the One-Dimensional $n$-Component Hubbard Model

The commensurate $p/q$-filled $n$-component Hubbard chain was investigated by bosonization and high-precision density-matrix renormalization-group analysis. It was found that depending on the relation between the number of components $n$, and the filling parameter $q$, the system shows metallic or insulating behavior, and for special fillings bond-ordered (dimerized, trimerized, tetramerized etc.) ground state develops in the insulating phase. A mean-field analysis shows that this bond ordering is a direct consequence of the spin-exchange interaction, which plays a crucial role in the one-parameter Hubbard model -- not only for infinite Coulomb repulsion, but for intermediate values as well.

Phase diagram of the t-U-J1-J2 chain at half filling

We investigate the half-filled Hubbard chain with additional nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor spin exchange, J1 and J2, using bosonization and the density-matrix renormalization group. For J2 = 0 we find a spin-density-wave phase for all positive values of the Hubbard interaction U and the Heisenberg exchange J1. A frustrating spin exchange J2 induces a bond-order-wave phase. For some values of J1, J2 and U, we observe a spin-gapped metallic Luther-Emery phase.

Topological Order, Dimerization, and Spinon Deconfinement in Frustrated Spin Ladders

We consider topological order and dimer order in several frustrated spin ladder models, which are related to higher dimensional models of current interest; we also address the occurrence of fractionalized phases with deconfined spinon excitations in these models. Combining results obtained with both analytic and numerical methods, we discuss how the occurrence of dimerized or fractionalized phases are dictated by the system's geometry.

Spatially nonuniform phases in the one-dimensional SU(n) Hubbard model for commensurate fillings

The one-dimensional repulsive SU$(n)$ Hubbard model is investigated analytically by bosonization approach and numerically using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method for $n=3,4$, and 5 for commensurate fillings $f=p/q$ where $p$ and $q$ are relatively prime. It is shown that the behavior of the system is drastically different depending on whether $q>n$, $q=n$, or $q n$, the umklapp processes are irrelevant, the model is equivalent to an $n$-component Luttinger liquid with central charge $c=n$. When $q=n$, the charge and spin modes are decoupled, the umklapp processes open a charge gap for finite $U>0$, whereas the spin modes remain gapless and the central charge $c=n-1$. The translational symmetry is not broken in the ground state for any $n$. On the other hand, when $q<n$, the charge and spin modes are coupled, the umklapp processes open gaps in all excitation branches, and a spatially nonuniform ground state develops. Bond-ordered dimerized, trimerized or tetramerized phases are found depending on the filling.

Mott transition and dimerization in the one-dimensional SU$(n)$ Hubbard model

The one-dimensional SU$(n)$ Hubbard model is investigated numerically for $n=2,3,4$, and 5 at half filling and $1/n$ filling using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. The energy gaps and various quantum information entropies are calculated. In the half-filled case, finite spin and charge gaps are found for arbitrary positive $U$ if $n > 2$. Furthermore, it is shown that the transition to the gapped phase at $U_{\rm c}=0$ is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type and is accompanied by a bond dimerization both for even and odd $n$. In the $1/n$-filled case, the transition has similar features as the metal-insulator transition in the half-filled SU(2) Hubbard model. The charge gap opens exponentially slowly for $U>U_{\rm c}=0$, the spin sector remains gapless, and the ground state is non-dimerized.

Entropic analysis of quantum phase transitions from uniform to spatially inhomogeneous phases

We propose a new approach to study quantum phase transitions in low-dimensional fermionic or spin models that go from uniform to spatially inhomogeneous phases such as dimerized, trimerized, or incommensurate phases. It is based on studying the length dependence of the von Neumann entropy and its corresponding Fourier spectrum for finite segments in the ground state of finite chains. Peaks at a nonzero wave vector are indicators of oscillatory behavior in decaying correlation functions.

Possible phases of two coupled n-component fermionic chains

A two-leg ladder with $n$-component fermionic fields in the chains has been considered using an analytic renormalization group method. The fixed points and possible phases have been determined for generic filling as well as for a half-filled system and for the case when one of the subbands is half filled. A weak-coupling Luttinger-liquid phase and several strong-coupling gapped phases have been found. In the Luttinger liquid phase, for the most general spin dependence of the couplings, all $2n$ modes have different velocities if the interband scattering processes are scaled out, while $n$ doubly degenerate modes appear if the interband scattering processes remain finite. The role of backward-scattering, charge-transfer and umklapp processes has been analysed using their bosonic form and the possible phases are characterized by the number of gapless modes. As a special case the SU($n$) symmetric Hubbard ladder has been investigated numerically. It was found that this model does not scale to the Luttinger liquid fixed point. Even for generic filling gaps open up in the spectrum of the spin or charge modes, and the system is always insulator in the presence of umklapp processes.

Two-site entropy and quantum phase transitions in low-dimensional models

We propose a new approach to study quantum phase transitions in low-dimensional lattice models. It is based on studying the von Neumann entropy of two neighboring central sites in a long chain. It is demonstrated that the procedure works equally well for fermionic and spin models, and the two-site entropy is a better indicator of quantum phase transition than calculating gaps, order parameters or the single-site entropy. The method is especially convenient when the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) algorithm is used.

Probable absence of a quadrupolar spin-nematic phase in the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain

We study numerically the ground-state phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain near the ferromagnetic instability point, where the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized quantum nematic phase has been suggested. Our results, obtained by a highly accurate density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) calculation are consistent with the view that the order parameter characterizing the dimer phase vanishes only at the point where the system becomes ferromagnetic, although the existence of a gapped or gapless nondimerized phase in a very narrow parameter range between the ferromagnetic and the dimerized regimes cannot be ruled out.

Unified phase diagram of models exhibiting neutral-ionic transition

We have studied the neutral-ionic transition in organic mixed-stack compounds. A unified model has been derived which, in limiting cases, is equivalent to the models proposed earlier, the donor-acceptor model and the ionic Hubbard model. Detailed numerical calculations have been performed on this unified model with the help of the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) procedure calculating excitation gaps, ionicity, lattice site entropy, two-site entropy, and the dimer order parameter on long chains and the unified phase diagram has been determined.

Quantum data compression, quantum information generation, and the density-matrix renormalization group method

We have studied quantum data compression for finite quantum systems where the site density matrices are not independent, i.e., the density matrix cannot be given as direct product of site density matrices and the von Neumann entropy is not equal to the sum of site entropies. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method for the 1-d Hubbard model, we have shown that a simple relationship exists between the entropy of the left or right block and dimension of the Hilbert space of that block as well as of the superblock for any fixed accuracy. The information loss during the RG procedure has been investigated and a more rigorous control of the relative error has been proposed based on Kholevo's theory. Our results are also supported by the quantum chemistry version of DMRG applied to various molecules with system lengths up to 60 lattice sites. A sum rule which relates site entropies and the total information generated by the renormalization procedure has also been given which serves as an alternative test of convergence of the DMRG method.

Optimizing momentum space DMRG using quantum information entropy

In order to optimize the ordering of the lattice sites in the momentum space and quantum chemistry versions of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method we have studied the separability and entanglement of the target state for the 1-D Hubbard model and various molecules. By analyzing the behavior of von Neumann and Neumann-Renyi entropies we have found criteria that help to fasten convergence. A new initialization procedure has been developed which maximizes the Kullback-Leibler entropy and extends the active space (AS) in a dynamical fashion. The dynamically extended active space (DEAS) procedure reduces significantly the effective system size during the first half sweep and accelerates the speed of convergence of momentum space DMRG and quantum chemistry DMRG to a great extent. The effect of lattice site ordering on the number of block states to be kept during the RG procedure is also investigated.

Search for the Nondimerized Quantum Nematic Phase in the Spin-1 Chain

Chubukov's proposal concerning the possibility of a nondimerized quantum nematic phase in the ground-state phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain is studied numerically. Our results do not support the existence of this phase, but they rather indicate a direct transition from the ferromagnetic into the dimerized phase.
