The charge ordered state in half-doped Bi-based manganites studied by $^{17}$O and $^{209}$Bi NMR

We present a $^{209}$Bi and $^{17}$O NMR study of the Mn electron spin correlations developed in the charge ordered state of Bi$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ and Bi$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$. The unusually large local magnetic field $^{209}H_{loc}$ indicates the dominant $6s^{2}$ character of the lone electron pair of Bi$^{3+}$-ions in both compounds. The mechanism connecting the $s$ character of the lone pairs to the high temperature of charge ordering $T_{CO}$ is still not clarified. The observed difference in $^{209}H_{loc}$ for Bi$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ to Bi$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is probably due to a decrease in the canting of the staggered magnetic moments of Mn$^{3+}$-ions from. The modification of the $^{17}$O spectra below $T_{CO}$ demonstrates that the line due to the apical oxygens is a unique local tool to study the development of the Mn spin correlations. In the AF state the analysis of the $^{17}$O spectrum of Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ and Bi$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ prompts us to try two different theoretical descriptions of the charge-ordered state, a site-centered model for the first manganite and a bond-centered model for the second one.

Uncorrelated and correlated nanoscale lattice distortions in the paramagnetic phase of magnetoresistive manganites

Neutron scattering measurements on a magnetoresistive manganite La$_{0.75}$(Ca$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$)$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ show that uncorrelated dynamic polaronic lattice distortions are present in both the orthorhombic (O) and rhombohedral (R) paramagnetic phases. The uncorrelated distortions do not exhibit any significant anomaly at the O-to-R transition. Thus, both the paramagnetic phases are inhomogeneous on the nanometer scale, as confirmed further by strong damping of the acoustic phonons and by the anomalous Debye-Waller factors in these phases. In contrast, recent x-ray measurements and our neutron data show that polaronic correlations are present only in the O phase. In optimally doped manganites, the R phase is metallic, while the O paramagnetic state is insulating (or semiconducting). These measurements therefore strongly suggest that the {\it correlated} lattice distortions are primarily responsible for the insulating character of the paramagnetic state in magnetoresistive manganites.

Exchange interaction effects on the optical properties of LuMnO3

We have measured the optical conductivity of single crystal LuMnO3 from 10 to 45000 cm-1 at temperatures between 4 and 300 K. A symmetry allowed on-site Mn $d$-$d$ transition near 1.7 eV is observed to blue shift (~0.1 eV) in the antiferromagnetic state due to Mn-Mn superexchange interactions. Similar anomalies are observed in the temperature dependence of the TO phonon frequencies which arise from spin-phonon interaction. We find that the known anomaly in temperature dependence of the quasi-static dielectric constant epsilon_0 below the T_N ~90 K is overwhelmingly dominated by the phonon contributions.

Photoemission and x-ray absorption study of MgC_(1-x)Ni_3

We investigated electronic structure of MgC_(1-x)Ni_3 with photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Both results show that overall band structure is in reasonable agreement with band structure calculations including the existence of von Hove singularity (vHs)near E_F. However, we find that the sharp vHs peak theoretically predicted near the E_F is substantially suppressed. As for the Ni core level and absorption spectrum, there exist the satellites of Ni 2p which have a little larger energy separation and reduced intensity compared to the case of Ni-metal. These facts indicate that correlation effects among Ni 3d electrons may be important to understand various physical properties.

Thermoelectric power of MgB$_{2-x}$Be$_x$

We investigated thermoelectric power $S(T)$ of MgB$_{2-x}$Be$_{x}$ ($x=0$, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.6). $S(T)$ decreases systematically with $x$, suggesting that the hole density increases. Our band calculation shows that the increase occurs in the $σ$-band. With the hole-doping, $T_{c}$ decreases. Implication of this phenomenon is discussed within the BCS framework. While the Mott formula explains only the linear part of $S(T)$ at low temperature, incorporation of electron-phonon interaction enables us to explain $S(T)$ over wide temperature range including the anomalous behavior at high temperature.

Structural and superconducting properties of MgB$_{2-x}$Be$_x$

We prepared MgB$_{2-x}$Be$_{x}$ ($x=0$, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.6) samples where B is substituted with Be. MgB$_{2}$ structure is maintained up to $x=0.6$. In-plane and inter-plane lattice constants were found to decrease and increase, respectively. Superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ decreases with $x$. We found that the $T_{c}$ decrease is correlated with in-plane contraction but is insensitive to carrier doping, which is consistent with other substitution studies such as Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$B$_{2}$ and MgB$_{2-x}$C$_{x}$. Implication of this work is discussed in terms of the 2D nature of $σ$-band.

Electrodynamics of Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3 Single Crystal investigated by Optical Conductivity Analyses

We investigated temperature dependent optical conductivity spectra of Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3 single crystal. We found that polishing and surface scattering effects on the Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3 crystal surfaces could significantly distort the optical responses, especially in the mid-infrared region. However, oxygen annealing and gold normalization processes seemed to remedy the distortions. We found that the spectral weight of Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3 in the metallic state might be composed of a Drude carrier term and a strong incoherent mid-infrared absorptions. The temperature dependence of the spectral weight suggests that the electron-lattice coupling should be important in optical properties of colossal magnetoresistance manganites.

Optical Investigations of Charge Gap in Orbital Ordered La1/2Sr3/2MnO4

Temperature and polarization dependent electronic structure of La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 were investigated by optical conductivity analyses. With decreasing temperature, for E//ab, a broad mid-infrared (MIR) peak of La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 becomes narrower and moves to the higher frequency, while that of Nd1/2Sr3/2MnO4 nearly temperature independent. We showed that the MIR peak in La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 originates from orbital ordering associated with CE-type magnetic ordering and that the Jahn-Teller distortion has a significant influence on the width and the position of the MIR peak.

Optical Investigations of La_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_3

We investigated temperature dependent optical conductivity spectra of La_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_3. Its phonon bending mode starts to be splitted near a structural phase transition temperature. With further cooling, strength of a mid-infrared small polaron peak, which is located at 0.4 eV, becomes increased. These temperature dependent changes in the phonon spectra and the polaron absorption peaks were explained by a phase separation and a percolation-type transition.

Spectral evolution in (Ca,Sr)RuO_3 near the Mott-Hubbard transition

We investigated the optical properties of (Ca,Sr)RuO_3 films on the borderline of a metal-insulator (M-I) transition. Our results show all of the predicted characteristics for a metallic Mott-Hubbard system, including (i) a mass enhancement in dc-limit, (ii) an U/2 excitation, and (iii) an U excitation. Also, a self-consistency is found within the Gutzwiller-Brinkman-Rice picture for the Mott transition. Our finding displays that electron correlation should be important even in 4d materials.
