Measurement of the Gamma-Ray Energy Spectrum beyond 100 TeV from the HESS J1843$-$033 Region

HESS J1843$-$033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond $100\, {\rm TeV}$ from the HESS J1843$-$033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of $0.34^{\circ} \pm 0.12^{\circ}$ is successfully detected above $25\, {\rm TeV}$ at $(α,\, δ) = (281.09^{\circ}\pm 0.10^{\circ},\, -3.76^{\circ}\pm 0.09^{\circ})$ near HESS J1843$-$033 with a statistical significance of $6.2\, σ$, and the source is named TASG J1844$-$038. The position of TASG J1844$-$038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843$-$033, eHWC J1842$-$035, and LHAASO J1843$-$0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in $25\, {\rm TeV} < E < 130\, {\rm TeV}$ is described with ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (9.70\pm 1.89)\times 10^{-16} (E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-3.26\pm 0.30}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843$-$033, LHAASO J1843$-$0338, and TASG J1844$-$038 implies the existence of a cutoff at $49.5\pm 9.0\, {\rm TeV}$. Associations of TASG J1844-038 with SNR G28.6$-$0.1 and PSR J1844-0346 are also discussed in detail for the first time.

Observation of gamma rays up to 320 TeV from the middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1849$-$000

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, σ$ and $4.4\, σ$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $σ$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849$-$000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, PeVatron.

Multiple topological nodal structure in LaSb2 with large linear magnetoresistance

Unconventional fermions in the immensely studied topological semimetals are the source for rich exotic topological properties. Here, using symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we propose the coexistence of multiple topological nodal structure in LaSb2, including topological nodal surfaces, nodal lines and in particular eightfold degenerate nodal points, which have been scarcely observed in a single material. Further, utilizing high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations measurements, we confirm the existence of nodal surfaces and eightfold degenerate nodal points in LaSb2, and extract the π Berry phase proving the non-trivial electronic band structure topology therein. The intriguing multiple topological nodal structure might play a crucial role in giving rise to the large linear magnetoresistance. Our work renews the insights into the exotic topological phenomena in LaSb2 and its analogous.

Photoemission Spectroscopic Evidence of Multiple Dirac Cones in Superconducting BaSn$_3$

The signatures of topological superconductivity (TSC) in the superconducting materials with topological nontrivial states prompt intensive researches recently. Utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate multiple Dirac fermions and surface states in superconductor BaSn$_3$ with a critical transition temperature of about 4.4 K. We predict and then unveil the existence of two pairs of type-\uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral1} topological Dirac fermions residing on the rotational axis. Type-\uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2} Dirac fermions protected by screw axis are confirmed in the same compound. Further calculation for the spin helical texture of the observed surface states originating from the Dirac fermions give an opportunity for realization of TSC in one single material. Hosting multiple Dirac fermions and topological surface states, the intrinsic superconductor BaSn$_3$ is expected to be a new platform for further investigation of the topological quantum materials as well as TSC.

Potential PeVatron supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 seen in the highest-energy gamma rays

Cosmic rays (protons and other atomic nuclei) are believed to gain energies of petaelectronvolts (PeV) and beyond at astrophysical particle accelerators called 'PeVatrons' inside our Galaxy. Although a characteristic feature of a PeVatron is expected to be a hard gamma-ray energy spectrum that extends beyond 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV) without a cutoff, none of the currently known sources exhibits such a spectrum due to the low maximum energy of accelerated cosmic rays or insufficient detector sensitivity around 100 TeV. Here we report the observation of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 above 10 TeV. This work provides flux data points up to and above 100 TeV and indicates that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV is well correlated with a molecular cloud rather than the pulsar PSR J2229+6114. Regarding the gamma-ray emission mechanism of G106.3+2.7, this morphological feature appears to favor a hadronic origin via the π0 decay caused by accelerated relativistic protons over a leptonic one via the inverse-Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. Furthermore, we point out that an X-ray flux upper limit on the synchrotron spectrum would provide important information to firmly establish the hadronic scenario as the mechanism of particle acceleration at the source.

Gamma-ray Observation of the Cygnus Region in the 100 TeV Energy Region

We report observations of gamma-ray emissions with energies in the 100 TeV energy region from the Cygnus region in our Galaxy. Two sources are significantly detected in the directions of the Cygnus OB1 and OB2 associations. Based on their positional coincidences, we associate one with a pulsar PSR J2032+4127 and the other mainly with a pulsar wind nebula PWN G75.2+0.1 with the pulsar moving away from its original birthplace situated around the centroid of the observed gamma-ray emission. This work would stimulate further studies of particle acceleration mechanisms at these gamma-ray sources.

First Detection of sub-PeV Diffuse Gamma Rays from the Galactic Disk: Evidence for Ubiquitous Galactic Cosmic Rays beyond PeV Energies

We report, for the first time, the long-awaited detection of diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. Particularly, all gamma rays above 398 TeV are observed apart from known TeV gamma-ray sources and compatible with expectations from the hadronic emission scenario in which gamma rays originate from the decay of $π^0$'s produced through the interaction of protons with the interstellar medium in the Galaxy. This is strong evidence that cosmic rays are accelerated beyond PeV energies in our Galaxy and spread over the Galactic disk.

The topological counterparts of non-Hermitian SSH models

The breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence due to non-Hermitian skin effect leads to the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence in the generalized Brillouin zone. Inspired by the case of the equivalence between the non-reciprocal hopping and imaginary gauge field, we propose a method to construct the topological equivalent models of the non-Hermitian dimerized lattices with the similarity transformations. The idea of the constructions is from that the imaginary magnetic flux vanishes under the open boundary condition and the period boundary spectra can be well approximated by open boundary spectra. As an illustration, we apply this approach to several representative non-Hermitian SSH models, efficiently obtaining topological invariants in analytic form defined in the conventional Bloch bands. The method gives an alternative way to study the topological properties of non-Hermitian system.

Spontaneous ferromagnetism induced topological phase transition in EuB6

The interplay between various symmetries and electronic bands topology is one of the core issues for topological quantum materials. Spontaneous magnetism, which leads to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, has been proven to be a powerful approach to trigger various exotic topological phases. In this work, utilizing the combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy and first-principles calculations, we present the direct evidence on the realization of the long-sought spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking induced topological phase transition in soft ferromagnetic EuB$_6$. We successfully disentangle the bulk band structure from complicated surface states, and reveal the hallmark band inversion occurring between two opposite-parity bulk bands below the phase transition temperature. Besides, our magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy result confirms the simultaneous formation of magnetic domains in EuB$_6$, implying the intimate link between the topological phase transition and broken time-reversal symmetry therein. Our results demonstrate that EuB$_6$ provides a potential platform to study the interplay between the topological phases and tunable magnetic orders.

Electronic structure of the high-mobility two-dimensional antiferromagnetic metal GdTe$_3$

The new-found two-dimensional antiferromagnetic GdTe$_3$ is attractive owing to its highest carrier mobility among all known layered magnetic materials, as well as its potential application for novel magnetic twistronic and spintronic devices. Here, we have used high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate its Fermi surface topology and low-lying electronic band structure. The Fermi surface is partially gapped by charge density wave below the transition temperature, the residual part reconstructs making GdTe$_3$ metallic. The high carrier mobility can be attributed to the sharp and nearly linear band dispersions near the Fermi energy. We find that the scattering rate of the linear band near the Fermi energy is almost linear within a wide energy range, indicating that GdTe$_3$ is a non-Fermi liquid metal. Our results in this paper provide a fundamental understanding of this layered Van der Waals antiferromagnetic materials to guide future studies on it.

Dual topological superconducting states in the layered titanium-based oxypnictide superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O

Topological superconductors have long been predicted to host Majorana zero modes which obey non-Abelian statistics and have potential for realizing non-decoherence topological quantum computation. However, material realization of topological superconductors is still a challenge in condensed matter physics. Utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we predict and then unveil the coexistence of topological Dirac semimetal and topological insulator states in the vicinity of Fermi energy ($E_F$) in the titanium-based oxypnictide superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O. Further spin-resolved measurements confirm its spin-helical surface states around $E_F$, which are topologically protected and give an opportunity for realization of Majorana zero modes and Majorana flat bands in one material. Hosting dual topological superconducting states, the intrinsic superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O is expected to be a promising platform for further investigation of topological superconductivity.

The large magnetocaloric effect and refrigerant capacity in nanocrystalline/ amorphous Gd$_3$Ni/Gd$_{65}$Ni$_{35}$ composite microwires

We report on a novel class of nanocrystalline/amorphous Gd$_3$Ni/Gd$_{65}$Ni$_{35}$ composite microwires, which was created directly by melt-extraction through controlled solidification. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of a biphase nanocrystalline/amorphous structure in these wires. Magnetic and magnetocaloric experiments indicate the large magnetic entropy change (-$Δ$SM ~9.64 J/kg K) and the large refrigerant capacity (RC ~742.1 J/kg) around the Curie temperature of ~120 K for a field change of 5 T. These values are ~1.5 times larger relative to its bulk counterpart, and are superior to other candidate materials being considered for active magnetic refrigeration in the liquid nitrogen temperature range.

First Detection of Photons with Energy Beyond 100 TeV from an Astrophysical Source

We report on the highest energy photons from the Crab Nebula observed by the Tibet air shower array with the underground water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array. Based on the criterion of muon number measured in an air shower, we successfully suppress 99.92% of the cosmic-ray background events with energies $E>100$ TeV. As a result, we observed 24 photon-like events with $E>100$ TeV against 5.5 background events, which corresponds to 5.6$σ$ statistical significance. This is the first detection of photons with $E>100$ TeV from an astrophysical source.

Influence of Earth-Directed Coronal Mass Ejections on the Sun's Shadow Observed by the Tibet-III Air Shower Array

We examine the possible influence of Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (ECMEs) on the Sun's shadow in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet-III air shower (AS) array. We confirm a clear solar-cycle variation of the intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow during ten years between 2000 and 2009. This solar-cycle variation is overall reproduced by our Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the Sun's shadow based on the potential field model of the solar magnetic field averaged over each solar rotation period. We find, however, that the magnitude of the observed intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow is significantly less than that predicted by MC simulations, particularly during the period around solar maximum when a significant number of ECMEs is recorded. The $χ^2$ tests of the agreement between the observations and the MC simulations show that the difference is larger during the periods when the ECMEs occur, and the difference is reduced if the periods of ECMEs are excluded from the analysis. This suggests the first experimental evidence of the ECMEs affecting the Sun's shadow observed in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity.

Evaluation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field Strength Using the Cosmic-Ray Shadow of the Sun

We analyze the Sun's shadow observed with the Tibet-III air shower array and find that the shadow's center deviates northward (southward) from the optical solar disc center in the "Away" ("Toward") IMF sector. By comparing with numerical simulations based on the solar magnetic field model, we find that the average IMF strength in the "Away" ("Toward") sector is $1.54 \pm 0.21_{\rm stat} \pm 0.20_{\rm syst}$ ($1.62 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat} \pm 0.22_{\rm syst}$) times larger than the model prediction. These demonstrate that the observed Sun's shadow is a useful tool for the quantitative evaluation of the average solar magnetic field.

Direct observation of the Dirac nodes lifting in semimetallic perovskite SrIrO3 thin films

Perovskite SrIrO3 has long been proposed as an exotic semimetal induced by the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. However, its low-lying electronic structure is still lacking. We synthesize high-quality perovskite SrIrO3 (100) films by means of oxide molecular beam epitaxy, and then systemically investigate their low energy electronic structure using in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the hole-like bands around R and the electron-like bands around U(T) intersect the Fermi level simultaneously, providing the direct evidence of the semimetallic ground state in this compound. Comparing with the density functional theory, we discover that the bandwidth of states near Fermi level is extremely small, and there exists a pronounced mixing between the Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 states. Moreover, our data reveal that the predicted Dirac degeneracy protected by the mirror-symmetry, which was theoretically suggested to be the key to realize the non-trivial topological properties, is actually lifted in perovskite SrIrO3 thin films. Our findings pose strong constraints on the current theoretical models for the 5d iridates.

Observation of the anisotropic Dirac cone in the band dispersion of 112-structured iron-based superconductor Ca0.9La0.1FeAs2

CaFeAs2 is a parent compound of recently discovered 112-type iron-based superconductors. It is predicted to be a staggered intercalation compound that naturally integrates both quantum spin Hall insulating and superconducting layers and an ideal system for the realization of Majorana modes. We performed a systematical angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principle calculation study of the slightly electron-doped CaFeAs2. We found that the zigzag As chain of 112-type iron-based superconductors play a considerable role in the low-energy electronic structure, resulting in the characteristic Dirac-cone like band dispersion as the prediction. Our experimental results further confirm that these Dirac cones only exists around the X but not Y points in the Brillouin zone, breaking the S4 symmetry at iron sites. Our findings present the compelling support to the theoretical prediction that the 112-type iron-based superconductors might host the topological nontrivial edge states. The slightly electron doped CaFeAs2 would provide us a unique opportunity to realize and explore Majorana fermion physics.

Method for identifying electromagnetically induced transparency in a tunable circuit quantum electrodynamics system

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been realized in atomic systems, but fulfilling the EIT conditions for artificial atoms made from superconducting circuits is a more difficult task. Here we report an experimental observation of the EIT in a tunable three-dimensional transmon by probing the cavity transmission. To fulfill the EIT conditions, we tune the transmon to adjust its damping rates by utilizing the effect of the cavity on the transmon states. From the experimental observations, we clearly identify the EIT and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) regimes as well as the transition regime in between. Also, the experimental data demonstrate that the threshold $Ω_{\rm AIC}$ determined by the Akaike information criterion can describe the EIT-ATS transition better than the threshold $Ω_{\rm EIT}$ given by the EIT theory.
