Control the qubit-qubit coupling with double superconducting resonators

We experimentally studied the switching off processes in the double-resonator coupler superconducting quantum circuit. In both frequency and time-domain, we observed the variation of qubit-qubit effective coupling by tuning the frequency differences between qubits and the double-resonator coupler. According to the measurement results, by just shifting about 50 MHz of qubits' frequencies, we can tune the effective qubit-qubit coupling strength from switching off point to two qubit gate point (effective coupling larger than 5 MHz) in double-resonator superconducting quantum circuit. The double-resonator (coupler) superconducting quantum circuit has the advantage of simple fabrications, introducing less flux noises, reducing occupancy of dilution refrigerator cables, which might supply a promising platform for future large-scale superconducting quantum processors.

Efficient spectrum analysis for multi-junction superconducting circuit

The extraction of transition frequencies from a spectrum has conventionally relied on empirical methods, and particularly in complex systems, it is a time-consuming and cumbersome process. To address this challenge, we establish a semi-automated efficient and precise spectrum analysis method. It first employs image processing methods to extract transition frequencies, subsequently estimating the Hamiltonians of a superconducting quantum circuit containing multiple Josephson junctions. In addition, we determine the suitable range of approximations in simulation methods, evaluating the physical reliability of the analysis.

Fast generation of Schrödinger cat states in a Kerr-tunable superconducting resonator

Schrödinger cat states, quantum superpositions of macroscopically distinct classical states, are an important resource for quantum communication, quantum metrology and quantum computation. Especially, cat states in a phase space protected against phase-flip errors can be used as a logical qubit. However, cat states, normally generated in three-dimensional cavities, are facing the challenges of scalability and controllability. Here, we present a novel strategy to generate and store cat states in a coplanar superconducting circuit by the fast modulation of Kerr nonlinearity. At the Kerr-free work point, our cat states are passively preserved due to the vanishing Kerr effect. We are able to prepare a 2-component cat state in our chip-based device with a fidelity reaching 89.1% under a 96 ns gate time. Our scheme shows an excellent route to constructing a chip-based bosonic quantum processor.

Resonance Fluorescence from a two-level artificial atom strongly coupled to a single-mode cavity

We experimentally demonstrate the resonance fluorescence of a two-level artificial atom strongly coupled to a single-mode cavity field. The effect was theoretically predicted thirty years ago by Savage [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 1376 (1989)]. The system consists of a superconducting qubit circuit and a one-dimensional transmission line resonator. In addition, a one-dimensional transmission line strongly coupled to the atom serves as an open space. The effect takes place, when a microwave field is applied to the cavity, which in turn is resonantly coupled to the atom. The fluorescence spectrum is measured via the emission into the transmission line. We find that the central peak is determined by the atom spontaneous emission to the open space and the widths of side peaks are largely determined by the coherent interaction between the atom and the cavity, that is, the fluorescence spectrum here is very different from that of the Mollow triplet. We also derive analytical form for the spectrum. Our experimental results agree well with theoretical calculations.

Observation of Kondo condensation in a degenerately doped silicon metal

When a magnetic moment is embedded in a metal, it captures itinerant electrons to form the Kondo cloud1,2, which can spread out over a few micrometres3,4. For a metal with dense magnetic impurities such that Kondo clouds overlap with each other, correlated ground states are formed. When the impurities form a regular lattice, the result is a heavy fermion or anti-ferromagnetic order depending on the dominant interaction5,6. Even in the case of random impurities, overlapping Kondo clouds are expected to form a coherent ground state. Here, we examine this issue by performing electrical transport and high-precision tunnelling density-of-states (DOS) spectroscopy measurements in a highly P-doped crystalline silicon metal where disorder-induced localized magnetic moments exist7. We detect the Kondo effect in the resistivity of the Si metal below 2 K and an exotic pseudogap in the DOS with gap edge peaks at a Fermi energy below 100 mK. The DOS gap and peaks are tuned by applying an external magnetic field and transformed into a metallic Altshuler-Aronov gap8 in the paramagnetic disordered Fermi liquid (DFL) phase. We interpret this phenomenon as the Kondo condensation, the formation of a correlated ground state of overlapping Kondo clouds, and its transition to a DFL. The boundary between the Kondo condensation and DFL phases is identified by analysing distinct DOS spectra in the magnetic field-temperature plane. A detailed theoretical analysis using a holographic method 9 , 10 , 11 reproduces the unusual DOS spectra, 1, supporting our scenario. Our work demonstrates the observation of the magnetic version of Bardeen-Cooper-Shrieffer (BCS) pair condensation and will be useful for understanding complex Kondo systems.

Photon-Dressed Bloch-Siegert Shift in an Ultrastrongly Coupled Circuit Quantum Electrodynamical System

A cavity quantum electrodynamical (QED) system beyond the strong-coupling regime is expected to exhibit intriguing quantum phenomena. Here we report a direct measurement of the photon-dressed qubit transition frequencies up to four photons by harnessing the same type of state transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system realized by inductively coupling a superconducting flux qubit to a coplanar-waveguide resonator. This demonstrates a convincing observation of the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift in the ultrastrongly coupled quantum system. Moreover, our results show that the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift becomes more pronounced as the photon number increases, which is a characteristic of the quantum Rabi model.

Tunable Microwave Single-photon Source Based on Transmon Qubit with High Efficiency

Single-photon sources are of great interest because they are key elements in different promising applications of quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate a highly efficient tunable on-demand microwave single-photon source based on a transmon qubit with the intrinsic emission efficiency above 98$\%$. The high efficiency ensures a negligible pure dephasing rate and the necessary condition for generation of indistinguishable photons. We provide an extended discussion and analysis of the efficiency of the photon generation. To further experimentally confirm the single-photon property of the source, correlation functions of the emission field are also measured using linear detectors with a GPU-enhanced signal processing technique. Our results experimentally demonstrate that frequency tunability and negligible pure dephasing rate can be achieved simultaneously and show that such a tunable single-photon source can be good for various practical applications in quantum communication, simulations and information processing in the microwave regime.

Pseudo-2D superconducting quantum computing circuit for the surface code: the proposal and preliminary tests

Of the many potential hardware platforms, superconducting quantum circuits have become the leading contender for constructing a scalable quantum computing system. All current architecture designs necessitate a 2D arrangement of superconducting qubits with nearest neighbour interactions, compatible with powerful quantum error correction using the surface code. A major hurdle for scalability in superconducting systems is the so called wiring problem, where qubits internal to a chip-set become inaccessible for external control/readout lines. Current approaches resort to intricate and exotic 3D wiring and packaging technology which is a significant engineering challenge to realize, while maintaining qubit fidelity. Here we solve this problem and present a modified superconducting scalable micro-architecture that does not require any 3D external line technology and reverts back to a completely planar design. This is enabled by a new pseudo-2D resonator network that provides inter-qubit connections via airbridges. We carried out experiments to examine the feasibility of the newly introduced airbridge component. The measured quality factor of these new inter-qubit resonators is sufficient for high fidelity gates, below the threshold for the surface code, with negligible measured cross-talk. The resulting physical separation of the external wirings and the inter-qubit connections on-chip should reduce cross-talk and decoherence as the chip-set increases in size. This result demonstrates that a large-scale, fully error corrected quantum computer can be constructed by monolithic integration technologies without additional overhead and without special packaging know-hows.

Quantum Simulation of the Fermion-Boson Composite Quasi-Particles with a Driven Qubit-Magnon Hybrid Quantum System

We experimentally demonstrate strong coupling between the ferromagnetic magnons in a small yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) sphere and the drive-field-induced dressed states of a superconducting qubit, which gives rise to the double dressing of the superconducting qubit. The YIG sphere and the superconducting qubit are embedded in a microwave cavity and the effective coupling between them is mediated by the virtual cavity photons. The theoretical results fit the experimental observations well in a wide region of the drive-field power resonantly applied to the superconducting qubit and reveal that the driven qubit-magnon hybrid quantum system can be harnessed to emulate a particle-hole-symmetric pair coupled to a bosonic mode. This hybrid quantum system offers a novel platform for quantum simulation of the composite quasi-particles consisting of fermions and bosons.

Time-domain grating with a periodically driven qutrit

Physical systems in the time domain may exhibit analogous phenomena in real space, such as time crystals, time-domain Fresnel lenses, and modulational interference in a qubit. Here we report the experimental realization of time-domain grating using a superconducting qutrit in periodically modulated probe and control fields via two schemes: Simultaneous modulation and complementary modulation. Both experimental and numerical results exhibit modulated Autler-Townes (AT) and modulation-induced diffraction (MID) effects. Theoretical results also confirm that the peak positions of the interference fringes of AT and MID effects are determined by the usual two-level relative phases, while the observed diffraction fringes, appearing only in the complementary modulation, are however related to the three-level relative phase. Further analysis indicates that such a single-atom time-domain diffraction originates from the correlation effect between the two time-domain gratings. Moreover, we find that the widths of the diffraction fringes are independent of the control-field power. Our results shed light on the experimental exploration of quantum coherence for modulated multi-level systems and may find promising applications in fast all-microwave switches and quantum-gate operations in the strong-driving regime.

Vacuum-induced Autler-Townes splitting in a superconducting artificial atom

We experimentally study a vacuum-induced Autler-Townes doublet in a superconducting three-level artificial atom strongly coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator and simultaneously to a transmission line. The Autler-Townes splitting is observed in the reflection spectrum from the three-level atom in a transition between the ground state and the second excited state when the transition between the two excited states is resonant with a resonator. By applying a driving field to the resonator, we observe a change in the regime of the Autler-Townes splitting from quantum (vacuum-induced) to classical (with many resonator photons). Furthermore, we show that the reflection of propagating microwaves in a transmission line could be controlled by different frequency single photons in a resonator.

Hybrid single-electron turnstiles with thick superconducting electrodes for improved quasiparticle relaxation

We demonstrate shadow evaporation-based fabrication of high-quality ultrasmall normal metal -- insulator -- superconductor tunnel junctions where the thickness of the superconducting electrode is not limited by the requirement of small junction size. The junctions are formed between a film of manganese-doped aluminium acting as the normal conducting electrode, covered by a thicker, superconducting layer of pure Al. We characterize the junctions by sub-gap current--voltage measurements and charge pumping measurements in a gate-driven hybrid single-electron transistor, operated as a turnstile for single electrons. The technique allows to advance towards turnstiles with close to ideally thermalized superconducting reservoirs, prerequisite for reaching metrological current quantization accuracy in a hybrid turnstile. We further present an alternative way to realize small junctions with thick Al leads based on multi-angle deposition. The work enables the future investigation of turnstiles based on superconductors other than Al, and benefits various other Al tunnel junction devices for which quasiparticle thermalization is essential.

Hybrid rf SQUID qubit based on high kinetic inductance

We report development and microwave characterization of rf SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device) qubits, consisting of an aluminium-based Josephson junction embedded in a superconducting loop patterned from a thin film of TiN with high kinetic inductance. Here we demonstrate that the systems can offer small physical size, high anharmonicity, and small scatter of device parameters. The hybrid devices can be utilized as tools to shed further light onto the origin of film dissipation and decoherence in phase-slip nanowire qubits, patterned entirely from disordered superconducting films.

Single-photon-driven high-order sideband transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit quantum electrodynamics system

We report the experimental observation of high-order sideband transitions at the single-photon level in a quantum circuit system of a flux qubit ultrastrongly coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator. With the coupling strength reaching 10% of the resonator's fundamental frequency, we obtain clear signatures of higher-order red and first-order blue-sideband transitions, which are mainly due to the ultrastrong Rabi coupling. Our observation advances the understanding of ultrastrongly-coupled systems and paves the way to study high-order processes in the quantum Rabi model at the single-photon level.

Method for identifying electromagnetically induced transparency in a tunable circuit quantum electrodynamics system

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been realized in atomic systems, but fulfilling the EIT conditions for artificial atoms made from superconducting circuits is a more difficult task. Here we report an experimental observation of the EIT in a tunable three-dimensional transmon by probing the cavity transmission. To fulfill the EIT conditions, we tune the transmon to adjust its damping rates by utilizing the effect of the cavity on the transmon states. From the experimental observations, we clearly identify the EIT and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) regimes as well as the transition regime in between. Also, the experimental data demonstrate that the threshold $Ω_{\rm AIC}$ determined by the Akaike information criterion can describe the EIT-ATS transition better than the threshold $Ω_{\rm EIT}$ given by the EIT theory.

Coherent dynamics and decoherence in a superconducting weak link

We demonstrate coherent dynamics of quantized magnetic fluxes in a superconducting loop with a weak link - a nanobridge patterned from the same thin NbN film as the loop. The bridge is a short rounded shape constriction, close to 10 nm long and 20 - 30 nm wide, having minimal width at its center. Quantum state control and coherent oscillations in the driven time evolution of the tunnel-junctionless system are achieved. Decoherence and energy relaxation in the system are studied using a combination of microwave spectroscopy and direct time-domain techniques. The effective flux noise behavior suggests inductance fluctuations as a possible cause of the decoherence.

Correlated emission lasing in harmonic oscillators coupled via a single three-level artificial atom

A single superconducting artificial atom provides a unique basis for coupling electromagnetic fields and photons hardly achieved with a natural atom. Bringing a pair of harmonic oscillators into resonance with transitions of the three-level atom converts atomic spontaneous processes into correlated emission dynamics. We demonstrate two-mode correlated emission lasing on harmonic oscillators coupled via the fully controllable three-level artificial atom. Correlation of two different color emissions reveals itself as equally narrowed linewiths and quench of their mutual phase-diffusion. The mutual linewidth is more than four orders of magnitude narrower than the Schawlow-Townes limit. The interference between the different color lasing fields demonstrates the two-mode fields are strongly correlated.

Tuneable on-demand single-photon source

An on-demand single photon source is a key element in a series of prospective quantum technologies and applications. We demonstrate the operation of a tuneable on-demand microwave photon source based on a fully controllable superconducting artificial atom strongly coupled to an open-end transmission line (a 1D half-space). The atom emits a photon upon excitation by a short microwave $π$-pulse applied through a control line weakly coupled to the atom. The emission and control lines are well decoupled from each other, preventing the direct leakage of radiation from the $π$-pulses used for excitation. The estimated efficiency of the source is higher than 75\% and remains to be about 50\% or higher over a wide frequency range from 6.7 to 9.1 GHz continuously tuned by an external magnetic field.
