Quantitative Raman measurements of the evolution of the Cooper-pairs density with doping in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d superconductors

We report Raman measurements on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d single crystals which allow us to quantitavely evaluate the doping dependence of the density of Cooper pairs in the superconducting state. We show that the drastic loss of Cooper pairs in the antinodal region as the doping level is reduced, is concomitant with a deep alteration of the quasiparticles dynamic above Tc and consistent with a pseudogap which competes with superconductivity. Our data also reveal that the overall density of Cooper pairs evolves with doping, distinctly from the superfluid density above the doping level pc=0.2.

Controlling the carrier concentration of the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+x} in Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments

We study the variation of the electronic properties at the surface of a high temperature superconductor as a function of vacuum conditions in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. Normally, under less than ideal vacuum conditions the carrier concentration of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+x} (Bi2212) increases with time due to the absorption of oxygen from CO2 and CO molecules that are prime contaminants present in ultra high vacuum (UHV) systems. We find that in a high quality vacuum environment at low temperatures, the surface of Bi2212 is quite stable (the carrier concentration remains constant), however at elevated temperatures the carrier concentration decreases due to the loss of oxygen atoms from the Bi-O layer. These two effects can be used to control the carrier concentration in-situ. Our finding opens the possibility of studying the electronic properties of the cuprates as a function of doping across the phase diagram on the same piece of sample (i.e. with the same impurities and defects). We envision that this method could be utilized in other surface sensitive techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy.

Evidence for unusual superconducting correlations coexisting with stripe order in La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4)

We present new x-ray and neutron scattering measurements of stripe order in La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4), along with low-field susceptibility, thermal conductivity, and specific heat data. We compare these with previously reported results for resistivity and thermopower. Temperature-dependent features indicating transitions (or crossovers) are correlated among the various experimental quantities. Taking into account recent spectroscopic studies, we argue that the most likely interpretation of the complete collection of results is that an unusual form of two-dimensional superconducting correlations appears together with the onset of spin-stripe order. Recent theoretical proposals for a sinusoidally-modulated superconducting state compatible with stripe order provide an intriguing explanation of our results and motivate further experimental tests. We also discuss evidence for one-dimensional pairing correlations that appear together with the charge order. With regard to the overall phenomenology, we consider the degree to which similar behavior may have been observed in other cuprates, and describe possible connections to various puzzling phenomena in cuprate superconductors.

Large Bi-2212 single crystal growth by the floating-zone technique

Effects of the growth velocity on the crystal growth behavior of Bi_2Sr_2Ca_1Cu_2O_x (Bi-2212) have been studied by floating zone technique. The results show that a necessary condition for obtaining large single crystals along the c-axis is that the solid-liquid interface of a growing rod maintains a stable planar growth front. The planar liquid-solid growth interface tends to break down into a cellular interface, while the growth velocity is higher than 0.25 mm/h. Single crystals of up to 50x7.2x7 mm3 along the a-, b- and caxes have been cut in a 7.2 mm diameter rod with optimum growth conditions. Tconset is 91 K measured by magnetic properties measurement system (MPMS) for as-grown crystals. Optical polarization microscope and neutron diffraction show that the quality of the single crystals is good.

Identification of a New Form of Electron Coupling in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements with super-high resolution have been carried out on an optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ high temperature superconductor. New high energy features at $\sim$115 meV and $\sim$150 meV, besides the prominent $\sim$70 meV one, are found to develop in the nodal electron self-energy in the superconducting state. These high energy features, which can not be attributed to electron coupling with single phonon or magnetic resonance mode, point to the existence of a new form of electron coupling in high temperature superconductors.

High Energy Dispersions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 High Temperature Superconductor from Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have been carried out on the high energy electron dynamics in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) high temperature superconductor. Momentum dependent measurements provide new insights on the nature of high energy kink at 200~400 meV and high energy dispersions. The strong dichotomy between the MDC- and EDC-derived bands is revealed which raises critical issues about its origin and which one represents intrinsic band structure. The MDC-derived high energy features are affected by the high-intensity valence band at higher binding energy and may not be intrinsic.
