Focusing and light collection effects on plasma-induced frequency-resolved optical switching (PI-FROSt) traces

Plasma-Induced Frequency-Resolved Optical Switching (PI-FROSt) is a promising and recently proposed phase-matching-free technique for characterising ultrafast pulses across broad spectral ranges. We investigate the mechanisms of PI-FROSt trace formation through numerical simulations and experimental validation. The results reveal that trace characteristics are highly sensitive to the relative focusing geometry between pump and probe pulses, as well as the spatial region selected for signal collection. Depending on these conditions, the interplay between plasma defocusing and positive lens-like nonlinear effects causes either intensity depletion or enhancement in the probe beam, flipping the PI-FROSt trace. Simulations demonstrate that optimal gate stability also depends strongly on the focusing scheme and the collecting region. This study highlights that precise spatial and temporal optimisation is essential to properly exploit the benefits of this broadband pulse characterisation technique.

High-Quality Pulse Compression Using a Hybrid All-Bulk Multipass Cell Scheme

We present a detailed numerical study of ultrashort pulse compression using a three-stage hybrid all-bulk multipass cell scheme. By operating in the enhanced frequency chirp regime, we achieve the compression of pulses from around 180 fs to 4 fs pulse duration (a total compression factor above 45), with side lobes contributing with intensity values lower than 0.2 % of the peak intensity. Optimal conditions for the enhanced frequency chirp regime propagation have been identified, enabling smooth spectral broadening and high-quality temporal profiles. The first two stages are based on bulk multipass cells to achieve a controlled spectral broadening, while the third stage consists of a thin plate to reach the spectral broadening needed for few cycle pulses without leaving the enhanced frequency chirp regime.

Formation of Vector Solitary waves with Mixed Dispersion in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We demonstrate the existence of a new class of two-component vector solitary waves in which dispersion coefficients have of opposite signs. Stability is achieved by inclusion of an additional linear coupling between the vector components that counterbalances the instability produced by the mixed dispersion and the non-linearity. In addition, we demonstrate that these solutions are experimentally observable as gap vector solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates located in oscillating optical lattices. The proposed experiment falls well within the standard experimental procedures for generating gap solitons in today's laboratories.

Dynamics of the Formation of Bright Solitary Waves of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

We present a detailed description of the formation of bright solitary waves in optical lattices. To this end, we have considered a ring lattice geometry with large radius. In this case, the ring shape does not have a relevant effect in the local dynamics of the condensate, while offering a realistic set up to implement experiments with conditions usually not available with linear lattices (in particular, to study collisions). Our numerical results suggest that the condensate radiation is the relevant dissipative process in the relaxation towards a self-trapped solution. We show that the source of dissipation can be attributed to the presence of higher order dispersion terms in the effective mass approach. In addition, we demonstrate that the stability of the solitary solutions is linked with particular values of the width of the wavepacket in the reciprocal space. Our study suggests that these critical widths for stability depend on the geometry of the energy band, but are independent of the condensate parameters (momentum, atom number, etc.). Finally, the non-solitonic nature of the solitary waves is evidenced showing their instability under collisions.
