In-medium properties of antikaons at finite temperature: the K^-/K^+ ratio at GSI

The $K^-/K^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions at GSI is studied including the properties of the participating hadrons in hot and dense matter, paying a particular attention to the in-medium properties of antikaons at finite temperature. The determination of the temperature and chemical potential at freeze-out conditions compatible with the ratio $K^-/K^+$ is very delicate, and depends on the approach adopted for the antikaon self-energy. Different approaches for the $K^-$ self-energy have been considered: non-interacting $K^-$, on-shell self-energy and single-particle spectral density. We observe that the use of an energy dependent $\bar{K}$ spectral density lowers considerably the freeze-out temperature with respect to the on-shell approach. We also conclude that the full off-shell approach gives rise to the "broad-band equilibration" advocated by Brown, Rho and Song.

Properties of D-mesons in nuclear matter within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach

The spectral density of the $D$-meson in the nuclear environment is studied within a self-consistent coupled-channel approach assuming a separable potential for the bare meson-baryon interaction. The $DN$ interaction, described through a G-matrix, generates dynamically the $Λ_c$ (2593) resonance. This resonance is the charm counterpart of the $Λ$ (1405) resonance generated from the s-wave $\bar{K}N$ interaction in the I=0 channel. The medium modification of the D-meson spectral density due to the Pauli blocking of intermediate states as well as due to the dressing of the D-mesons, nucleons and pions is investigated. We observe that the inclusion of coupled-channel effects and the self-consistent dressing of the $D$-meson results in an overall reduction of the in-medium $D$-meson changes compared to previous work which neglect those effects.

Structure of Stars and Nuclei

The properties of dense hadronic and quark matter and its relation to compact stars are discussed. In a bottom-up approach one starts with nuclear and hypernuclear physics at low density and extrapolates hadronic matter to large densities. The matching to the quark matter phase is performed in a top-down approach starting at asymptotically large densities. Implications for the mass-radius relation of compact stars and the existence of a new family of solutions will be outlined.

Kaons and antikaons in hot and dense hadronic matter

The medium modification of kaon and antikaon masses, compatible with low energy KN scattering data, are studied in a chiral SU(3) model. The mutual interactions with baryons in hot hadronic matter and the effects from the baryonic Dirac sea on the K(${\rm {\bar K}}$) masses are examined. The in-medium masses from the chiral SU(3) effective model are compared to those from chiral perturbation theory. Furthermore, the influence of these in-medium effects on kaon rapidity distributions and transverse energy spectra as well as the $K, \bar{K}$ flow pattern in heavy-ion collision experiments at 1.5 to 2 A$\cdot$GeV are investigated within the HSD transport approach. Detailed predictions on the transverse momentum and rapidity dependence of directed flow $v_1$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ are provided for Ni+Ni at 1.93 A$\cdot$GeV within the various models, that can be used to determine the in-medium $K^\pm$ properties from the experimental side in the near future.

The Equation of State for Cold and Dense Strongly Interacting Matter

We discuss recent results for the equation of state for cold and dense strongly interacting matter. We consider the extreme cases of very high densities, where weak-coupling approaches may in principle give reasonable results, and very low densities, where we use the framework of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. We also speculate on the nature of the chiral transition and present possible astrophysical implications.

Mass modification of D-meson in hot hadronic matter

We evaluate the in-medium $D$ and $\bar D$-meson masses in hot hadronic matter induced by interactions with the light hadron sector described in a chiral SU(3) model. The effective Lagrangian approach is generalized to SU(4) to include charmed mesons. We find that the D-mass drops substantially at finite temperatures and densities, which open the channels of the decay of the charmonium states ($Ψ^\prime$, $χ_c$, $J/Ψ$) to $D \bar D$ pairs in the thermal medium. The effects of vacuum polarisations from the baryon sector on the medium modification of the $D$-meson mass relative to those obtained in the mean field approximation are investigated. The results of the present work are compared to calculations based on the QCD sum-rule approach, the quark-meson coupling model, chiral perturbation theory, as well as to studies of quarkonium dissociation using heavy quark potential from lattice QCD.

Dilute Nuclear Matter in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We use chiral perturbation theory to compute the effective nucleon propagator in an expansion about low density in the chiral limit. We neglect four-nucleon interactions and focus on pion exchange. Evaluating the nucleon self-energy on its mass shell to leading order, we show that the effective nucleon mass increases by a small amount. We discuss the relevance of our results to the structure of compact stars.

K^-/K^+ ratio at GSI in hot and dense matter

The $K^-/K^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions at GSI energies is studied including the properties of the participating hadrons in hot and dense matter. The determination of the temperature and chemical potential at freeze-out conditions compatible with the ratio $K^-/K^+$ is very delicate, and depends on the approach adopted for the antikaon self-energy. Three approaches for the $K^-$ self-energy are considered: non-interacting $K^-$, on-shell self-energy and single-particle spectral density. With respect to the on-shell approach, the use of an energy dependent $\bar{K}$ spectral density, including both s- and p-wave components of the $\bar{K}N$ interaction, lowers considerably the freeze-out temperature and gives rise to the "broad-band equilibration" advocated by Brown, Rho and Song.

Particle ratios at RHIC: Effective hadron masses and chemical freeze-out

The measured particle ratios in central heavy-ion collisions at RHIC-BNL are investigated within a chemical and thermal equilibrium chiral SU(3) σ-ωapproach. The commonly adopted noninteracting gas calculations yield temperatures close to or above the critical temperature for the chiral phase transition, but without taking into account any interactions. Contrary, the chiral SU(3) model predicts temperature and density dependent effective hadron masses and effective chemical potentials in the medium and a transition to a chirally restored phase at high temperatures or chemical potentials. Three different parametrizations of the model, which show different types of phase transition behaviour, are investigated. We show that if a chiral phase transition occured in those collisions, ''freezing'' of the relative hadron abundances in the symmetric phase is excluded by the data. Therefore, either very rapid chemical equilibration must occur in the broken phase, or the measured hadron ratios are the outcome of the dynamical symmetry breaking. Furthermore, the extracted chemical freeze-out parameters differ considerably from those obtained in simple noninteracting gas calculations. In particular, the three models yield up to 35 MeV lower temperatures than the free gas approximation. The in-medium masses turn out differ up to 150 MeV from their vacuum values.

Effect of in-medium properties on heavy-ion collisions

The properties of strange hadrons, i.e. of kaons and hyperons, in the nuclear medium are discussed in connection with neutron star properties and relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Firstly, the relevant medium modifications of a kaon in a medium as provided by heavy-ion collisions is critically examined within a coupled channel calculation. We demonstrate, that particle ratios for kaons are not a sensitive probe of in-medium effects while the K- flow is more suited to pin down the K- optical potential in dense matter. Secondly, the interaction between hyperons is studied and may form bound states which can be produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Signals for the detection of strange dibaryons by their decay topology and/or in the invariant mass spectra are outlined.

Critical Review Of Quark Gluon Plasma Signals

Compelling evidence for a new form of matter has been claimed to be formed in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. We critically review two suggested signatures for this new state of matter: First the suppression of the J/$Ψ$, which should be strongly suppressed in the QGP by two different mechanisms, the color-screening and the QCD-photoeffect. Secondly the measured particle, in particular strange hadronic, ratios might signal the freeze-out from a quark-gluon phase.

Properties of Strange Hadronic Matter in Bulk and in Finite Systems

The hyperon-hyperon potentials due to a recent SU(3) Nijmegen soft-core potential model are incorporated within a relativistic mean field calculation of strange hadronic matter. We find considerably higher binding energy in bulk matter compared to several recent calculations which constrain the composition of matter. For small strangeness fractions, matter is dominated by a composition of nucleons, Lambdas, and Xis, and the calculated binding energy closely follows that calculated by using the hyperon potentials of our previous calculations. For larger strangeness fractions, the calculated binding energy increases substantially beyond any previous calculation due to a phase transition into Sigma and Xi dominated matter. We also compare bulk matter calculations with finite system calculations, again highlighting the consequences of reducing the Coulomb destabilizing effects in finite strange systems.

Chiral Symmetry Restoration at Nonzero Temperature in the SU(3) \times SU(3) Linear Sigma Model

We study patterns of chiral symmetry breaking at zero temperature and its subsequent restoration at nonzero temperature within the $SU(3)_{r} \times SU(3)_{\ell}$ linear sigma model. Gap equations for the masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons and the non-strange and strange quark condensates are systematically derived in the Hartree approximation via the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism. In the chiral limit, the chiral symmetry restoring transition is found to be first order, as predicted by universality arguments. Taking the experimental values for the meson masses, however, the transition is crossover. The absence of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly is found to drive this transition closer to being first order. At large temperatures, the mixing angles between octet and singlet states approach ideal flavor mixing.

Dibaryons with Strangeness: their Weak Nonleptonic Decay using SU(3) Symmetry and how to find them in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

Weak SU(3) symmetry is successfully applied to the weak hadronic decay amplitudes of octet hyperons. Weak nonmesonic and mesonic decays of various dibaryons with strangeness, their dominant decay modes, and lifetimes are calculated. Production estimates for BNL's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider are presented employing wave function coalescence. Signals for detecting strange dibaryon states in heavy-ion collisions and revealing information about the unknown hyperon-hyperon interactions are outlined.

Effective Restoration of the U_A(1) symmetry in the SU(3) linear sigma model

The effective restoration of the chiral U(A)(1) symmetry in strong interactions is studied using the linear chiral SU(3)xSU(3) model at finite temperatures. We find that the disappearance of the chiral anomaly causes a considerable change in the meson mass spectrum. We propose several signals for detecting this chiral phase in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions: The eta/pi0 ratio is enhanced by an order of magnitude, the a0 is suppressed in the K+K- mass spectrum, and the scalar kappa meson appears as a peak just below the K*(892) in the invariant piK mass spectrum.

Hadrons in Dense Resonance-Matter: A Chiral SU(3) Approach

A nonlinear chiral SU(3) approach including the spin 3/2 decuplet is developed to describe dense matter. The coupling constants of the baryon resonances to the scalar mesons are determined from the decuplet vacuum masses and SU(3) symmetry relations. Different methods of mass generation show significant differences in the properties of the spin-3/2 particles and in the nuclear equation of state.

Quark phases in neutron stars and a "third family" of compact stars as a signature for phase transitions

The appearance of quark phases in the dense interior of neutron stars provides one possibility to soften the equation of state (EOS) of neutron star matter at high densities. This softening leads to more compact equilibrium configurations of neutron stars compared to pure hadronic stars of the same mass. We investigate the question to which amount the compactness of a neutron star can be attributed to the presence of a quark phase. For this purpose we employ several hadronic EOS in the framework of the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model and an extended MIT bag model to describe the quark phase. We find that - almost independent of the model parameters - the radius of a pure hadronic neutron star gets typically reduced by 20-30% if a pure quark phase in the center of the star does exist. For some EOS we furthermore find the possibility of a "third family" of compact stars which may exist besides the two known families of white dwarfs and neutron stars. We show how an experimental proof of the existence of a third family by mass and radius measurements may provide a unique signature for a phase transition inside neutron stars.

Medium Modified Cross Sections, Temperature and Finite Momentum Effects for Antikaon Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions

The medium modifications of antikaons in dense matter are studied in a coupled channel calculation for scenarios more closely related to the environment encountered in heavy-ion collisions. We find that the optical potential of the antikaons turns repulsive or is drastically reduced for finite momenta or finite temperature. Hence, the antikaon mass does not decrease substantially in heavy-ion collisions to provide an explanation for the observed antikaon production rates at threshold. We demonstrate that the in-medium production cross section of antikaons via pions and Sigma hyperons is remarkably enhanced up to an order of magnitude. The effect of in medium correction on the resulting kaon spectra is studied within a transport model. We find that both in medium correction lead to about the same enhancement of the spectrum. However, once the temperature dependence is taken into account no enhancement is found.
