Theoretical Analysis of the "Double-q" Magnetic Structure of CeAl2

A model involving competing short-range isotropic Heisenberg interactions is developed to explain the "double-q" magnetic structure of CeAl$_2$. For suitably chosen interactions, terms in the Landau expansion quadratic in the order parameters explain the condensation of incommensurate order at wavevectors in the star of (1/2 $-δ$, 1/2 $+δ$, 1/2)$(2π/a)$, where $a$ is the cubic lattice constant. We show that the fourth order terms in the Landau expansion lead to the formation of the so-called "double-q" magnetic structure in which long-range order develops simultaneously at two symmetry-related wavevectors, in striking agreement with the magnetic structure determinations. Based on the value of the ordering temperature and of the Curie-Weiss $Θ$ of the susceptibility, we estimate that the nearest neighbor interaction $K_0$ is ferromagnetic, with $K_0/k=-11\pm 1$K and the next-nearest neighbor interaction $J$ is antiferromagnetic with $J/k=6 \pm 1$K. We also briefly comment on the analogous phenomenon seen in the similar system TmS.

Isospin odd pi K scattering length

We make use of the chiral two-loop representation of the pi K scattering amplitude [J. Bijnens, P. Dhonte and P. Talavera, JHEP 0405 (2004) 036] to investigate the isospin odd scattering length at next-to-next-to-leading order in the SU(3) expansion. This scattering length is protected against contributions of m_s in the chiral expansion, in the sense that the corrections to the current algebra result are of order M_pi^2. In view of the planned lifetime measurement on pi K atoms at CERN it is important to understand the size of these corrections.

Spectrum and decays of hadronic atoms

We describe the spectra and decays of pi pi and pi K atoms within a non-relativistic effective field theory. The evaluations of the energy shifts and widths are performed at next-to-leading order in isospin symmetry breaking. The prediction for the lifetime of the pi K atom in its ground-state yields tau = (3.7 \pm 0.4) * 10^{-15} sec.

Spectra and decays of pi pi and pi K atoms

We describe the spectra and decays of pi pi and pi K atoms within a non-relativistic effective field theory. The evaluations of the energy shifts and widths are performed at next-to-leading order in isospin symmetry breaking. We provide general formulae for all S-states, and discuss the states with angular momentum one in some detail. The prediction for the lifetime of the pi K atom in its ground-state yields tau = (3.7 \pm 0.4) * 10^{-15} sec.

Decay widths and energy shifts of pi pi and pi K atoms

We calculate the S-wave decay widths and energy shifts for pi pi and pi K atoms in the framework of QCD+QED. The evaluation - valid at next-to-leading order in isospin symmetry breaking - is performed within a non-relativistic effective field theory. The results are of interest for future hadronic atom experiments.

Explicit generating functional for pions and virtual photons

We construct the explicit one-loop functional of chiral perturbation theory for two light flavours, including virtual photons. We stick to contributions where 1 or 2 mesons and at most one photon are running in the loops. With the explicit functional at hand, the evaluation of the relevant Green functions boils down to performing traces over the flavour matrices. For illustration, we work out the pi+ pi- -> pi0 pi0 scattering amplitude at threshold at order p^4, e^2p^2.
