Elliptic complexes on manifolds with boundary

We show that elliptic complexes of (pseudo)differential operators on smooth compact manifolds with boundary can always be complemented to a Fredholm problem by boundary conditions involving global pseudodifferential projections on the boundary (similarly as the spectral boundary conditions of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer for a single operator). We prove that boundary conditions without projections can be chosen if, and only if, the topological Atiyah-Bott obstruction vanishes. These results make use of a Fredholm theory for complexes of operators in algebras of generalized pseudodifferential operators of Toeplitz type which we also develop in the present paper.

Boundary value problems with Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type conditions and spectral triples

We study realizations of pseudodifferential operators acting on sections of vector-bundles on a smooth, compact manifold with boundary, subject to conditions of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. Ellipticity and Fredholm property, compositions, adjoints and self-adjointness of such realizations are discussed. We construct regular spectral triples $(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{H},\mathcal{D})$ for manifolds with boundary of arbitrary dimension, where $\mathcal{H}$ is the space of square integrable sections. Starting out from Dirac operators with APS-conditions, these triples are even in case of even dimensional manifolds; we show that the closure of $\mathcal{A}$ in $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{H})$ coincides with the continuous functions on the manifold being constant on each connected component of the boundary.

On the Fredholm property of bisingular pseudodifferential operators

For operators belonging either to a class of global bisingular pseudodifferential operators on $R^m \times R^n$ or to a class of bisingular pseudodifferential operators on a product $M \times N$ of two closed smooth manifolds, we show the equivalence of their ellipticity (defined by the invertibility of certain associated homogeneous principal symbols) and their Fredholm mapping property in associated scales of Sobolev spaces. We also prove the spectral invariance of these operator classes and then extend these results to the even larger classes of Toeplitz type operators.

Inspiral-merger-ringdown waveforms for black-hole binaries with non-precessing spins

We present the first analytical inspiral-merger-ringdown gravitational waveforms from binary black holes (BBHs) with non-precessing spins, that is based on a description of the late-inspiral, merger and ringdown in full general relativity. By matching a post-Newtonian description of the inspiral to a set of numerical-relativity simulations, we obtain a waveform family with a conveniently small number of physical parameters. These waveforms will allow us to detect a larger parameter space of BBH coalescence, including a considerable fraction of precessing binaries in the comparable-mass regime, thus significantly improving the expected detection rates.

Matching post-Newtonian and numerical relativity waveforms: systematic errors and a new phenomenological model for non-precessing black hole binaries

We present a new phenomenological gravitational waveform model for the inspiral and coalescence of non-precessing spinning black hole binaries. Our approach is based on a frequency domain matching of post-Newtonian inspiral waveforms with numerical relativity based binary black hole coalescence waveforms. We quantify the various possible sources of systematic errors that arise in matching post-Newtonian and numerical relativity waveforms, and we use a matching criteria based on minimizing these errors; we find that the dominant source of errors are those in the post-Newtonian waveforms near the merger. An analytical formula for the dominant mode of the gravitational radiation of non-precessing black hole binaries is presented that captures the phenomenology of the hybrid waveforms. Its implementation in the current searches for gravitational waves should allow cross-checks of other inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform families and improve the reach of gravitational wave searches.

The periodic b-equation and Euler equations on the circle

In this note we show that the periodic b-equation can only be realized as an Euler equation on the Lie group Diff(S^1) of all smooth and orientiation preserving diffeomorphisms on the cirlce if b=2, i.e. for the Camassa-Holm equation. In this case the inertia operator generating the metric on Diff(S^1) is given by A=1-d^2/dx^2. In contrast, the Degasperis-Procesi equation, for which b=3, is not an Euler equation on Diff(S^1) for any inertia operator. Our result generalizes a recent result of B. Kolev.

Bounded H_\infty-calculus for pseudodifferential Douglis-Nirenberg systems of mild regularity

Parameter-ellipticity with respect to a closed subsector of the complex plane for pseudodifferential Douglis-Nirenberg systems is discussed and shown to imply the existence of a bounded H_\infty-calculus in suitable scales of Sobolev, Besov, and Hoelder spaces. We also admit non pseudodifferential perturbations. Applications concern systems with coefficients of mild Hoelder regularity and the generalized thermoelastic plate equations.

Bounded $\mathbf{H_\infty}$-Calculus for Differential Operators on Conic Manifolds with Boundary

We derive conditions that ensure the existence of a bounded $H_\infty$-calculus in weighted $L_p$-Sobolev spaces for closed extensions $\underline{A}_T$ of a differential operator $A$ on a conic manifold with boundary, subject to differential boundary conditions $T$. In general, these conditions ask for a particular pseudodifferential structure of the resolvent $(λ-\underline{A}_T)^{-1}$ in a sector $Λ\subset\mathbf{C}$. In case of the minimal extension they reduce to parameter-ellipticity of the boundary value problem $(A,T)$. Examples concern the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians.

Realizations of Differential Operators on Conic Manifolds with Boundary

We study the closed extensions (realizations) of differential operators subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on weighted L_p-Sobolev spaces over a manifold with boundary and conical singularities. Under natural ellipticity conditions we determine the domains of the minimal and the maximal extension. We show that both are Fredholm operators and give a formula for the relative index.

Differential Operators on Conic Manifolds: Maximal Regularity and Parabolic Equations

We study an elliptic differential operator A on a manifold with conic points. Assuming A to be defined on the smooth functions supported away from the singularities, we first address the question of possible closed extensions of A to L^p Sobolev spaces and then explain how additional ellipticity conditions ensure maximal regularity for the operator A. Investigating the Lipschitz continuity of the maps f(u)=|u|^α, with real α\ge 1, and f(u)=u^α, with αa natural number, and using a result of Clément and Li, we finally show unique solvability of a quasilinear equation of the form \dot{u} - a(u) Δu = f(u) in suitable spaces.

Bounded Imaginary Powers of Differential Operators on Manifolds with Conical Singularities

We study the minimal and maximal closed extension of a differential operator A on a manifold B with conical singularities, when A acts as an unbounded operator on weighted L^p-spaces over B, 1 < p < \infty. Under suitable ellipticity assumptions we can define a family of complex powers A^z. We also obtain sufficient information on the resolvent of A to show the boundedness of the purely imaginary powers. Examples concern unique solvability and maximal regularity for the solution of the Cauchy problem for the Laplacian on conical manifolds as well as certain quasilinear diffusion equations.
