Study of psi' and chi_c decays as feed-down sources of J/psi hadro-production

The interpretation of the J/psi suppression patterns observed in nuclear collisions, at CERN and RHIC, as a signature of the formation of a deconfined phase of QCD matter, requires knowing which fractions of the measured J/psi yields, in pp collisions, are due to decays of heavier charmonium states. From a detailed analysis of the available mid-rapidity charmonium hadro-production cross sections, or their ratios, we determine that the J/psi feed-down contributions from psi' and chi_c decays are, respectively, (8.1 +/- 0.3) % and (25 +/- 5) %. These proton-proton values are derived from global averages of the proton-nucleus measurements, assuming that the charmonium states are exponentially absorbed with the length of matter they traverse in the nuclear targets.

The Charmonium (Bottomonium) binding ate finite T

The charmonium (bottomonim) binding at finite temperature is studied with static potentials extracted from the lattice QCD data of Kaczmarek et al. The bottomonium spectrum is also studied. This is relevant for Hard Probes in Heavy Ion Collisions.

Highlights from the NA60 experiment

The NA60 experiment is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS. It has measured the dimuon yield in Indium--Indium collisions with an In beam of 158 AGeV/c and in p-A collisions with a proton beam of 400 and 158 AGeV/c. The results allow to address three important physics topics, namely the study of the rho spectral function in nuclear collisions, the clarification of the origin of the dimuon excess measured by NA50 in the intermediate mass range, and the J/psi suppression pattern in a collision system different from Pb-Pb. An overview of these results will be given in this paper.

NA60 results on $p_T$ spectra and the $ρ$ spectral function in In-In collisions

The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has studied low-mass muon pairs in 158 AGeV In-In collisions. A strong excess of pairs is observed above the yield expected from neutral meson decays. The unprecedented sample size of close to 400K events and the good mass resolution of about 2% have made it possible to isolate the excess by subtraction of the decay sources (keeping the $ρ$). The shape of the resulting mass spectrum exhibits considerable broadening, but essentially no shift in mass. The acceptance-corrected transverse-momentum spectra have a shape atypical for radial flow and show a significant mass dependence, pointing to different sources in different mass regions.

J/$ψ$ suppression in In-In collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon

The NA60 experiment has studied J/$ψ$ production in Indium-Indium collisions at 158 A$\cdot$GeV. In this paper we present an updated set of results obtained with the complete set of available statistics and an improved alignment of the vertex tracker. The centrality dependence of the J/$ψ$ production, obtained with an analysis technique based only on the J/$ψ$ sample, indicates that a suppression beyond that induced by nuclear absorption is present in In-In collisions, setting in at $\sim$80 participant nucleons. A first study of the systematic errors related with this measurement is discussed. We also present preliminary results on the J/$ψ$ azimuthal distributions.

Low Mass Dimuon Production in Indium-Indium Collisions at the CERN SPS

NA60 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS which measured dimuon production in nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. In this paper we report on a precision measurement of low-mass muon pairs in 158 AGeV indium-indium collisions. A significant excess of pairs is observed above the yield expected from neutral meson decays. The excess can be isolated by subtraction of expected sources, thanks to the excellent mass resolution and large sample size.

Study of dimuon production in Indium-Indium collisions with the NA60 experiment

The NA60 experiment at the CERN-SPS is devoted to the study of dimuon production in heavy-ion and proton-nucleus collisions. We present preliminary results from the analysis of Indium-Indium collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. The topics covered are low mass vector meson production, J/psi production and suppression, and the feasibility of the open charm measurement from the dimuon continuum in the mass range below the J/psi peak.

Moving boundary effects in Quark Gluon Plasma

We analyze the known moving boundary effects in plasma and briefly review a mechanism for particle acceleration through a plasma front. We then show how this mechanism may affect particles crossing the boundary of an expanding quark gluon plasma.

Absorption and J/psi Suppression in Heavy Ion Collisions

We discuss the J/psi suppression in the framework of multiple collision models. From the analysis of the Pb-Pb NA50 data we conclude that the strength of the absorption has increased, but we find no clear evidence for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma.
