The role of the short range magnetic correlations on the gap opening of the topological Kondo insulators

In this work we investigate the effects of the short range magnetic correlations on the gap opening of the topological Kondo insulators. We consider an additional narrow band to the otherwise completely localized f-electrons, by adding a term to the periodic Anderson model which allows a small hopping of the localized electrons between neighboring sites of the lattice. This new model is adequate to study a novel class of intermetallic 4f and 5f orbitals materials: the Kondo topological insulators, whose paradigmatic material is the compound SmB6. For simplicity, we consider a version of the periodic Anderson model on a two dimensional square lattice. The starting point of the model is the 4f-Ce ions orbitals, with J=5/2 multiplet in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. We present results of the correlation functions and we show that the short range antiferromagnetic correlations favors the formation of magnetic moments on the atoms, and at the same time the existence of these moments opens the possibility of the spin-flip scattering by the conduction electrons, generating the Kondo effect, which contribute to the opening of a gap in the density of states of the system. We also calculate the phase diagram which shows that, as we vary the Ef level position from the empty regime to the Kondo regime, the system develops several phases: metallic, band insulator and Kondo topological insulator. The band structure calculated shows that the model develops a strong topological insulator.

Spin-dependent beating patterns in thermoelectric properties: Filtering the carriers of the heat flux in a Kondo adatom system

We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas hosting a Kondo adatom hybridized with an STM tip. Such a setup is treated within the single-impurity Anderson model in combination with the atomic approach for the Green's functions. Due to the spin dependence of the Fermi wavenumbers the electrical and thermal conductances, together with thermopower and Lorenz number reveal beating patterns as function of the STM tip position in the Kondo regime. In particular, by tuning the lateral displacement of the tip with respect to the adatom vicinity, the temperature and the position of the adatom level, one can change the sign of the Seebeck coefficient through charge and spin. This opens a possibility of the microscopic control of the heat flux analogously to that established for the electrical current.

Real-Time Dynamics of a Spin Chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interactions: Spiral Formation and Quantum Spin Oscillations

We studied the non-equilibrium short-time dynamics of a spin-1/2 chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions after a sudden quench by a transverse field. We found that inhomogeneous spin-spirals with opposite chiralities propagate from the edges towards the center of the chain. This propagation is accompanied by quantum spin oscillations which decay asymptotically with time. A theoretical description of this phenomenon is given to a good accuracy with the help of numerical calculations with the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group algorithm.

Quantum anisotropic Heisenberg chains with superlattice structure: a DMRG study

Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we study spin superlattices composed of a repeated pattern of two spin-1/2 XXZ chains with different anisotropy parameters. The magnetization curve can exhibit two plateaus, a non trivial plateau with the magnetization value given by the relative sizes of the sub-chains and another trivial plateau with zero magnetization. We find good agreement of the value and the width of the plateaus with the analytical results obtained previously. In the gapless regions away from the plateaus, we compare the finite-size spin gap with the predictions based on bosonization and find reasonable agreement. These results confirm the validity of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid superlattice description of these systems.

Luttinger liquid superlattices: realization of gapless insulating phases

We investigate Luttinger Liquid superlattices, a periodic structure composed of two kinds of one-dimensional systems of interacting electrons. We calculate several properties of the low-energy sector: the effective charge and spin velocities, the compressibility, various correlation functions, the Landauer conductance and the Drude weight. The low-energy properties are subsumed into effective parameters, much like homogeneous one-dimensional systems. A generic result is the weighted average nature of these parameters, in proportion to the spatial extent of the underlying subunits, pointing to the possibility of ``engineered'' structures. As a specific realization, we consider a one-dimensional Hubbard superlattice, which consists of a periodic arrangement of two long Hubbard chains with different coupling constants and different hopping amplitudes. This system exhibits a rich phase diagram with several phases, both metallic and insulating. We have found that gapless insulating phases are present over a wide range of parameters.

Luttinger liquid superlattices

We calculate the correlation functions and the DC conductivity of Luttinger liquid superlattices, modeled by a repeated pattern of interacting and free Luttinger liquids. In a specific realization, where the interacting subsystem is a Hubbard chain, the system exhibits a rich phase diagram with four different phases: two metals and two compressible insulators. In general, we find that the effective low energy description amalgamates features of both types of liquids in proportion to their spatial extent, suggesting the interesting possibility of `engineered' Luttinger liquids.
