On the potential value of Ca II K spectroheliogram time-series for solar activity and irradiance studies

Various observatories around the globe started regular full-disk imaging of the solar atmosphere in the Ca II K line since the early decades of the 20th century. The archives made by these observations have the potential of providing far more detailed information on solar magnetism than just the sunspot number and area records to which most studies of solar activity and irradiance changes are restricted. We evaluate the image contents of three Ca II K spectroheliogram time-series, specifically those obtained by the digitization of the Arcetri, Kodaikanal, and Mt Wilson photographic archives. We describe the main problems afflicting these data and analyze their quality by expressing the image contents through several quantities. We compare the results obtained with those for similar present-day observations taken with the Meudon spectroheliograph and with the Rome-PSPT. We show that historic data suffer from stronger geometrical distortions and photometric uncertainties than similar present-day observations. The latter uncertainties mostly originate from the photographic calibration of the original data and from stray-light effects. We also show that the image contents of the three analyzed series vary in time. These variations are probably due to instrument changes and aging of the spectrographs used, as well as changes of the observing programs. Our results imply that the main challenge for the analysis of historic data is their accurate photometric calibration. This problem must be solved before they can provide reliable information about solar magnetism and activity over the last century. Moreover, inter-calibration of results obtained from independent time-series is required to reliably trace changes of solar properties with time from the analysis of such data.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 12B_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a $^{12}$C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed \lam{12}{B} spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state {\it s}-wave $Λ$ peak and the 11 MeV {\it p}-wave $Λ$ peak.

A Search for Sigma^0_5, N^0_5 and Theta^++ Pentaquark States

A high-resolution (sigma_instr. = 1.5 MeV) search for narrow states (Gamma < 10 MeV) with masses of M_x approx 1500-1850 MeV in ep -> e'K^+ X, e'K^- X and e' pi^+ X electroproduction at small angles and low Q^2 was performed. These states would be candidate partner states of the reported Theta^+(1540) pentaquark. No statistically significant signal was observed in any of the channels at 90% C.L. Upper limits on forward production were determined to be between 0.7% and 4.2% of the Lambda(1520) production cross section, depending on the channel and the assumed mass and width of the state.

Low lying axial-vector mesons as dynamically generated resonances

We make a theoretical study of the s-wave interaction of the nonet of vector mesons with the octet of pseudoscalar mesons starting from a chiral invariant Lagrangian and implementing unitarity in coupled channels. By looking for poles in the unphysical Riemann sheets of the unitarized scattering amplitudes, we get two octets and one singlet of axial-vector dynamically generated resonances. The poles found can be associated to most of the low lying axial-vector resonances quoted in the Particle Data Book: $b_1(1235)$, $h_1(1170)$, $h_1(1380)$, $a_1(1260)$, $f_1(1285)$ and two poles to the $K_1(1270)$ resonance. We evaluate the couplings of the resonances to the $VP$ states and the partial decay widths in order to reinforce the arguments in the discussion.

Two neutrino double $β$ decay of 94v$\leq A\leq $110 nuclei for $0^+ \to 0^+$ transition

The two neutrino double beta decay of $ ^{94,96}$Zr$,^{98,100}$Mo$,^{104}$% Ru and $ ^{110}$Pd nuclei for $0^{+}\to 0^{+}$ transition is studied in the PHFB model in conjunction with the summation method. In the first step, the reliability of the intrinsic wave functions has been established by obtaining an overall agreement between a number of theoretically calculated spectroscopic properties and the available experimental data for $ ^{94,96}$% Zr$,^{94,96,98,100}$Mo, $^{98,100,104}$Ru, $^{104,110}$Pd and $^{110}$Cd isotopes. Subsequently, the PHFB wave functions of the above mentioned nuclei are employed to calculate the nuclear transition matrix elements $M_{2ν}$ as well as half-lives $T{_{1/2}^{2ν}}$. Further, we have studied the effects of deformation on the $M_{2ν}$.
