Heavy Quarks: Summary Report

The present status of the heavy-quark production theory is critically reviewed in the first contribution. The second contribution summarises the present heavy flavour data from HERA and gives an outlook of what can be expected from HERA-II. The potential of the LHC experiments for charm and beauty physics is reviewed in the 3rd contribution. Then the relevance of saturation and small-x effects to heavy quark production at HERA and at the LHC are discussed. The non-perturbative aspects of heavy-quark fragmentation and their relevance to HERA and LHC are discussed in the next contribution. Finally, a comparison of different theoretical predictions for HERA and LHC based on different approaches is presented.

Tevatron-for-LHC Report of the QCD Working Group

The experiments at Run 2 of the Tevatron have each accumulated over 1 inverse femtobarn of high-transverse momentum data. Such a dataset allows for the first precision (i.e. comparisons between theory and experiment at the few percent level) tests of QCD at a hadron collider. While the Large Hadron Collider has been designed as a discovery machine, basic QCD analyses will still need to be performed to understand the working environment. The Tevatron-for-LHC workshop was conceived as a communication link to pass on the expertise of the Tevatron and to test new analysis ideas coming from the LHC community. The TeV4LHC QCD Working Group focussed on important aspects of QCD at hadron colliders: jet definitions, extraction and use of Parton Distribution Functions, the underlying event, Monte Carlo tunes, and diffractive physics. This report summarizes some of the results achieved during this workshop.

QCD threshold corrections to di-lepton and Higgs rapidity distributions beyond N${}^2$LO

We present threshold enhanced QCD corrections to rapidity distributions of di-leptons in the Drell-Yan process and of Higgs particles in both gluon fusion and bottom quark annihilation processes using Sudakov resummed cross sections. We have used renormalisation group invariance and the mass factorisation theorem that these hard scattering cross sections satisfy as well as Sudakov resummation of QCD amplitudes. We find that these higher order threshold QCD corrections stabilise the theoretical predictions under scale variations.

On Asymptotic Assouad-Nagata Dimension

For a large class of metric space X including discrete groups we prove that the asymptotic Assouad-Nagata dimension AN-asdim X of X coincides with the covering dimension $\dim(ν_L X)$ of the Higson corona of X with respect to the sublinear coarse structure on X. Then we apply this fact to prove the equality AN-asdim(X x R) = AN-asdim X + 1. We note that the similar equality for Gromov's asymptotic dimension asdim generally fails to hold [Dr3]. Additionally we construct an injective map from the asymptotic cone without the basepoint to the sublinear Higson Corona.

Higgs Boson Production from Black Holes at the LHC

If the fundamental Planck scale is near a TeV, then TeV scale black holes should be produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC where \sqrt{s} = 14 TeV. As the temperature of the black holes can be ~ 1 TeV we also expect production of Higgs bosons from them via Hawking radiation. This is a different production mode for the Higgs boson, which would normally be produced via direct pQCD parton fusion processes. In this paper we compare total cross sections and transverse momentum distributions dσ/dp_T for Higgs production from black holes at the LHC with those from direct parton fusion processes at next-to-next-to-leading order and next-to-leading order respectively. We find that the Higgs production from black holes can be larger or smaller than the direct pQCD production depending upon the Planck mass and black hole mass. We also find that dσ/dp_T of Higgs production from black holes increases as a function of p_T which is in sharp contrast with the pQCD predictions where dσ/dp_T decreases so we suggest that the measurement of an increase in dσ/dp_T as p_T increases for Higgs (or any other heavy particle) production can be a useful signature for black holes at the LHC.

Asymptotic Dimension of Discrete Groups

We extend Gromov's notion of asymptotic dimension of finitely generated groups to all discrete groups. In particular, we extend the Hurewicz type theorem proven in [B-D2] to general groups. Then we use this extension to prove a formula for the asymptotic dimension of finitely generated solvable groups in terms of their Hirsch length.

Averages of b-hadron Properties at the End of 2005

This article reports world averages for measurements on b-hadron properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) using the available results as of at the end of 2005. In the averaging, the input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and all known correlations are taken into account. The averages include lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, branching fractions of B meson decays to final states with open charm, charmonium and no charm, and measurements related to CP asymmetries.

J/Psi and Psi' Polarizations in Polarized Proton-Proton Collisions at the RHIC

We study inclusive heavy quarkonium production with definite polarizations in polarized proton-proton collisions using the non-relativistic QCD color-octet mechanism. We present results for rapidity distributions of cross sections and spin asymmetries for the production of J/psi and psi' with specific polarizations in polarized p-p collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV and 500 GeV at the RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range.

On the Scale Variation of the Total Cross Section for Higgs Production at the LHC and at the Tevatron

We present a detailed study of the total $p p$ cross section for scalar Higgs production to next-to-next-to leading order in $α_s$ at LHC energies, and of the $p\bar p$ cross section at the Tevatron, combining an implementation of the solutions of the parton evolution equations at the 3-loop order with the corresponding hard scatterings, evaluated at the same perturbative order. Our solutions of the DGLAP equations are implemented directly in $x$-space and allow the study of the dependence of the results on the factorization ($μ_F$) and renormalization scales $(μ_R)$ typical of a given process, together with the stability of the perturbative expansion. The input sets for the parton evolutions are those given by Martin, Roberts, Stirling and Thorne and by Alekhin. Results for K-factors are also presented. The NNLO corrections can be quite sizeable at typical collider energies. The stability region of the perturbative expansion is found when $μ_R > m_H\simμ_F$.

A Test Facility for the International Linear Collider at SLAC End Station A, for Prototypes of Beam Delivery and IR Components

The SLAC Linac can deliver damped bunches with ILC parameters for bunch charge and bunch length to End Station A. A 10Hz beam at 28.5 GeV energy can be delivered there, parasitic with PEP-II operation. We plan to use this facility to test prototype components of the Beam Delivery System and Interaction Region. We discuss our plans for this ILC Test Facility and preparations for carrying out experiments related to collimator wakefields and energy spectrometers. We also plan an interaction region mockup to investigate effects from backgrounds and beam-induced electromagnetic interference.

On asymptotic dimension of countable abelian groups

We compute the asymptotic dimension of the rationals given with an invariant proper metric. Also, we show that a countable torsion abelian group taken with an invariant proper metric has asymptotic dimension zero.

An approximation for NLO single Higgs boson inclusive transverse momentum distributions in hadron-hadron collisions

In the framework of the gluon-gluon fusion process for Higgs boson production there are two different prescriptions. They are given by the exact process where the gluons couple via top-quark loops to the Higgs boson and by the approximation where the top-quark mass $m_t$ is taken to infinity. In the latter case the coupling of the gluons to the Higgs boson is described by an effective Lagrangian. Both prescriptions have been used for the $2 \to 2$ body reactions to make predictions for Higgs boson production at hadron colliders. In next-to-leading order only the effective Lagrangian approach has been used to compute the single particle inclusive distributions. The exact computation of the latter has not been done yet because the n-dimensional extensions of $2 \to 3$ processes are not calculated and the two-loop virtual corrections are still missing. To remedy this we replace wherever possible the Born cross sections in the asymptotic top-quark mass limit by their exact analogues. These cross sections appear in the soft and virtual gluon contributions to the next-to-leading order distributions. This approximation is inspired by the fact that soft-plus-virtual gluons constitute the bulk of the higher order correction. Deviations from the asymptotic top-quark mass limit are discussed.

The difference between n-dimensional regularization and n-dimensional reduction in QCD

We discuss the difference between n-dimensional regularization and n-dimensional reduction for processes in QCD which have an additional mass scale. Examples are heavy flavour production in hadron-hadron collisions or on-shell photon-hadron collisions where the scale is represented by the mass $m$. Another example is electroproduction of heavy flavours where we have two mass scales given by $m$ and the virtuality of the photon $Q=\sqrt{-q^2}$. Finally we study the Drell-Yan process where the additional scale is represented by the virtuality $Q=\sqrt{q^2}$ of the vector boson ($γ^*, W, Z$). The difference between the two schemes is not accounted for by the usual oversubtractions. There are extra counter terms which multiply the mass scale dependent parts of the Born cross sections. In the case of the Drell-Yan process it turns out that the off-shell mass regularization agrees with n-dimensional regularization.

Two-loop corrections to Higgs boson production

In this paper we present the complete two-loop vertex corrections to scalar and pseudo-scalar Higgs boson production for general colour factors for the gauge group ${\rm SU(N)}$ in the limit where the top quark mass gets infinite. We derive a general formula for the vertex correction which holds for conserved and non conserved operators. For the conserved operator we take the electromagnetic vertex correction as an example whereas for the non conserved operators we take the two vertex corrections above. Our observations for the structure of the pole terms $1/ε^4$, $1/ε^3$ and $1/ε^2$ in two loop order are the same as made earlier in the literature for electromagnetism. However we also elucidate the origin of the second order single pole term which is equal to the second order singular part of the anomalous dimension plus a universal function which is the same for the quark and the gluon. NNLO Corrections to the Higgs Production Cross Section

We discuss the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to the total cross section for (pseudo-) scalar Higgs boson production. The computation is carried out in the effective Lagrangian approach which emerges from the standard model by taking the limit $m_t \to \infty$ where $m_t$ denotes the mass of the top quark.

NNLO Corrections to the Polarized Drell-Yan Coefficient Function

We present the full next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to the coefficient function for the polarized cross section $d Δσ/d Q$ of the Drell-Yan process. We study the effect of these corrections on the process $p+p\to l^+l^-+`X'$ at an C.M. energy $\sqrt{S}=200 GeV$. All QCD partonic subprocesses have been included provided the lepton pair is created by a virtual photon, which is a valid approximation for a lepton pair invariant mass $Q<50 GeV$. For this reaction the dominant subprocess is given by $q+\bar q\to γ^*+`X'$ and its higher order corrections so that it provides us with an excellent tool to measure the polarized sea-quark densities.
