Many-body state and dynamic behaviour of the pair-correlation function of a small Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a ring potential

We investigate the many-body state and the static and the dynamic behaviour of the pair-correlation function of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a finite atom number, which is confined in a quasi-one-dimensional toroidal/annular potential, both for repulsive, and for attractive interactions. We link the dynamic pair-correlation function that we evaluate with the problem of quantum time crystals. For weak repulsive interatomic interactions and a finite number of atoms the pair-correlation function shows a periodic temporal behaviour, which disappears in the limit of a large atom number, in agreement with general arguments. Finally we provide some insight into older results of attractive interactions, where the time-crystalline behaviour exists only in the limit of a large atom number.

Transition from the mean-field to the bosonic Laughlin state in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate that rotates in either a harmonic, or a weakly-anharmonic trapping potential. Performing numerical calculations, we investigate the behaviour of the gas in these two cases as the angular momentum, or equivalently as the rotational frequency of the trap increases. While in the case of a purely-harmonic potential the gas makes a transition from the mean-field regime to the correlated, "Laughlin", regime, in the case of anharmonic confinement the mean-field approximation remains always valid. We compare our derived results in these two cases, using both the mean-field approximation, as well as the diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian considering a small atom number.

Fragility of the Laughlin state in an anharmonically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

When a Bose-Einstein condensate rotates in a purely harmonic potential with an angular frequency which is close to the trap frequency, its many-body state becomes highly correlated, with the most well-known being the bosonic Laughlin state. To take into account that in a real experiment no trapping potential is ever exactly harmonic, we introduce an additional weak, quartic potential and demonstrate that the Laughlin state is highly sensitive to this extra potential. Our results imply that achieving these states experimentally is essentially impossible, at least for a macroscopic atom number.

Excitation spectrum of a mixture of two Bose gases confined in a ring potential with interaction asymmetry

We study the rotational properties of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensed gas of distinguishable atoms which are confined in a ring potential using both the mean-field approximation, as well as the method of diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that the angular momentum may be given to the system either via single-particle, or "collective" excitation. Furthermore, despite the complexity of this problem, under rather typical conditions the dispersion relation takes a remarkably simple and regular form. Finally, we argue that under certain conditions the dispersion relation is determined via collective excitation. The corresponding many-body state, which, in addition to the interaction energy minimizes also the kinetic energy, is dictated by elementary number theory.

Dimensional reduction in Bose-Einstein condensed clouds of atoms confined in tight potentials of any geometry and any interaction strength

Motivated by numerous experiments on Bose-Einstein condensed atoms which have been performed in tight trapping potentials of various geometries (elongated and/or toroidal/annular), we develop a general method which allows us to reduce the corresponding three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the order parameter into an effectively one-dimensional equation, taking into account the interactions (i.e., treating the width of the transverse profile variationally) and the curvature of the trapping potential. As an application of our model we consider atoms which rotate in a toroidal trapping potential. We evaluate the state of lowest energy for a fixed value of the angular momentum within various approximations of the effectively one-dimensional model and compare our results with the full solution of the three-dimensional problem, thus getting evidence for the accuracy of our model.

Rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with a finite number of atoms confined in a ring potential: Spontaneous symmetry breaking, beyond the mean-field approximation

Motivated by recent experiments on Bose-Einstein condensed atoms which rotate in annular/toroidal traps we study the effect of the finiteness of the atom number $N$ on the states of lowest energy for a fixed expectation value of the angular momentum, under periodic boundary conditions. To attack this problem, we develop a general strategy, considering a linear superposition of the eigenstates of the many-body Hamiltonian, with amplitudes that we extract from the mean field approximation. This many-body state breaks the symmetry of the Hamiltonian, it has the same energy to leading order in $N$ as the mean-field state and the corresponding eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, however it has a lower energy to subleading order in $N$ and thus it is energetically favorable.

Mean-field yrast spectrum and persistent currents in a two-component Bose gas with interaction asymmetry

We analyze the mean-field yrast spectrum of a two-component Bose gas in the ring geometry with arbitrary interaction asymmetry. Of particular interest is the possibility that the yrast spectrum develops local minima at which persistent superfluid flow can occur. By analyzing the mean-field energy functional, we show that local minima can be found at plane-wave states and arise when the system parameters satisfy certain inequalities. We then go on to show that these plane-wave states can be yrast states even when the yrast spectrum no longer exhibits a local minimum. Finally, we obtain conditions which establish when the plane-wave states cease to be yrast states. Specific examples illustrating the roles played by the various interaction asymmetries are presented.

Hysteresis and metastability of Bose-Einstein condensed clouds of atoms confined in ring potentials

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of atoms which rotate in a toroidal/annular potential. Assuming one-dimensional motion, we evaluate the critical frequencies associated with the effect of hysteresis and the critical coupling for stability of the persistent currents. We perform these calculations using both the mean-field approximation and the method of numerical diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian which includes corrections due to the finiteness of the atom number.

Persistent currents in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a ring potential

We present variational and numerical solutions for the problem of stability of persistent currents in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of distinguishable atoms which rotate in a ring potential. We consider the general class of solutions of constant density in the two components separately, thus providing an alternative approach of the solution of the same problem given recently by Zhigang Wu and Eugene Zaremba [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 88}, 063640 (2013)]. Our approach provides a physically transparent solution of this delicate problem. Finally, we give a unified and simple picture of the lowest-energy state of the system for large values of the coupling.

Solitary-wave solutions in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates under periodic boundary conditions

We derive solitary-wave solutions within the mean-field approximation in quasi-one-dimensional binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates under periodic boundary conditions, for the case of an effective repulsive interatomic interaction. The particular gray-bright solutions that give the global energy minima are determined. Their characteristics and the associated dispersion relation are derived. In the case of weak coupling, we diagonalize the Hamiltonian analytically to obtain the full excitation spectrum of "quantum" solitary-wave solutions.

Excitation spectrum of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring potential

A mixture of two distinguishable Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a ring potential has numerous interesting properties under rotational and solitary-wave excitation. The lowest-energy states for a fixed angular momentum coincide with a family of solitary-wave solutions. In the limit of weak interactions, exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian is possible and permits evaluation of the complete excitation spectrum of the system.

Solitary waves and yrast states in Bose-Einstein condensed gases of atoms

Considering a Bose-Einstein condensed gas confined in one dimension with periodic boundary conditions, we demonstrate that, very generally, solitary-wave and rotational excitations coincide. This exact equivalence allows us to establish connections between a number of effects that are present in these two problems, many of which have been studied using the mean-field approximation.

Solitary waves of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms confined in finite rings

Motivated by recent progress in trapping Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in toroidal potentials, we examine solitary-wave solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation subject to periodic boundary conditions. When the circumference of the ring is much larger than the size of the wave, the density profile is well approximated by that of an infinite ring, however the density and the velocity of propagation cannot vanish simultaneously. When the size of the ring becomes comparable to the size of the wave, the density variation becomes sinusoidal and the velocity of propagation saturates to a constant value.

Solitary waves in mixtures of Bose gases confined in annular traps

A two-component Bose-Einstein condensate that is confined in a one-dimensional ring potential supports solitary-wave solutions, which we evaluate analytically. The derived solutions are shown to be unique. The corresponding dispersion relation that generalizes the case of a single-component system shows interesting features.

Mixtures of Bose Gases Confined in a Ring Potential

The rotational properties of a mixture of two distinguishable Bose gases that are confined in a ring potential provide novel physical effects that we demonstrate in this study. Persistent currents are shown to be stable for a range of the population imbalance between the two components at low angular momentum. At higher values of the angular momentum, even small admixtures of a second species of atoms make the persistent currents highly fragile.
