Magnetothermal study of Dy Stuffed Spin Ice: Dy2(DyxTi2-x)O7-x/2

We have studied the thermodynamics of the stuffed spin ice material, Dy2(DyxTi2-x)O7-x/2, in which additional Dy3+ replace Ti4+ in the pyrochlore Dy2Ti2O7. Heat capacity measurements indicate that these materials lose the spin ice zero point entropy for x >= 0.3, sharply contrasting with results on the analogous Ho materials. A finite ac susceptibility is observed as T ~ 0 in both the Ho and Dy materials with x = 0.67, which suggests that spin fluctuations persist down to T ~ 0. We propose that both the entropy and susceptibility data may be explained as a result of domains of local pyrochlore type structural order in these materials.

Measuring Photons and Neutrons at Zero Degrees in CMS

The CMS Zero Degree Calorimeters, ZDCs, will measure photons and neutrons emitted with |eta|> 8.6 from Pb+Pb, p+Pb and p+p collisions at sqrt(Snn)=5.5, 8.8 and 14 TeV respectively. The calorimeter consists of an electromagnetic part segmented in the horizontal direction and an hadronic part segmented into four units in depth. In addition CMS will have access to data from a segmented shower maximum detector being built for luminosity measurements. We will present detailed results from tests beam measurements taken at the CERN SPS. These data will be used to extrapolate the utility of the ZDCs to measure photons, and possibly pi0s in p+p and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions. Data from the hadronic section can be used to estimate the number of participants in heavy ion-collisions. In addition we will discuss plans to use the detector to measure the reaction plane, thereby extending the sensitivity of the central detectors in CMS.

Exploring the Time Domain with the Palomar-QUEST Sky Survey

Exploration of the time variability on the sky over a broad range of flux levels and wavelengths is rapidly becoming a new frontier of astronomical research. We describe here briefly the Palomar-QUEST survey being carried out from the Samuel Oschin 48-inch Schmidt telescope at Palomar. The following features make the survey an attractive candidate for studying time variability: anticipated survey area of 12,000 - 15,000 sq. degrees in the drift scan mode, point source depth of 21st mag. in I under good conditions, near simultaneous observations in four filters, and at least four passes per year at each location covered. The survey will yield a large number of transients and highly variable sources in the near future and in that sense is a prototype of LSST and Pan-STARRS. We briefly outline our strategy for searching such objects and the proposed pipeline for detecting transients in real-time.

Supernova / Acceleration Probe: A Satellite Experiment to Study the Nature of the Dark Energy

The Supernova / Acceleration Probe (SNAP) is a proposed space-based experiment designed to study the dark energy and alternative explanations of the acceleration of the Universe's expansion by performing a series of complementary systematics-controlled measurements. We describe a self-consistent reference mission design for building a Type Ia supernova Hubble diagram and for performing a wide-area weak gravitational lensing study. A 2-m wide-field telescope feeds a focal plane consisting of a 0.7 square-degree imager tiled with equal areas of optical CCDs and near infrared sensors, and a high-efficiency low-resolution integral field spectrograph. The SNAP mission will obtain high-signal-to-noise calibrated light-curves and spectra for several thousand supernovae at redshifts between z=0.1 and 1.7. A wide-field survey covering one thousand square degrees resolves ~100 galaxies per square arcminute. If we assume we live in a cosmological-constant-dominated Universe, the matter density, dark energy density, and flatness of space can all be measured with SNAP supernova and weak-lensing measurements to a systematics-limited accuracy of 1%. For a flat universe, the density-to-pressure ratio of dark energy can be similarly measured to 5% for the present value w0 and ~0.1 for the time variation w'. The large survey area, depth, spatial resolution, time-sampling, and nine-band optical to NIR photometry will support additional independent and/or complementary dark-energy measurement approaches as well as a broad range of auxiliary science programs. Quantum and thermal spin relaxation in diluted spin ice: Dy(2-x)MxTi2O7 (M = Lu, Y)

We have studied the low temperature a.c. magnetic susceptibility of the diluted spin ice compound Dy(2-x)MxTi2O7, where the magnetic Dy ions on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice have been replaced with non-magnetic ions, M = Y or Lu. We examine a broad range of dilutions, 0 <= x <= 1.98, and we find that the T ~ 16 K freezing is suppressed for low levels of dilution but re-emerges for x > 0.4 and persists to x = 1.98. This behavior can be understood as a non-monotonic dependence of the quantum spin relaxation time with dilution. The results suggest that the observed spin freezing is fundamentally a single spin process which is affected by the local environment, rather than the development of spin-spin correlations as earlier data suggested.

Low Temperature Spin Freezing in Dy2Ti2O7 Spin Ice

We report a study of the low temperature bulk magnetic properties of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 with particular attention to the (T < 4 K) spin freezing transition. While this transition is superficially similar to that in a spin glass, there are important qualitative differences from spin glass behavior: the freezing temperature increases slightly with applied magnetic field, and the distribution of spin relaxation times remains extremely narrow down to the lowest temperatures. Furthermore, the characteristic spin relaxation time increases faster than exponentially down to the lowest temperatures studied. These results indicate that spin-freezing in spin ice materials represents a novel form of magnetic glassiness associated with the unusual nature of geometrical frustration in these materials.

Quantum-Classical Reentrant Relaxation Crossover in Dy2Ti2O7 Spin-Ice

We have studied spin relaxation in the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 through measurements of the a.c. magnetic susceptibility. While the characteristic spin relaxation time is thermally activated at high temperatures, it becomes almost temperature independent below Tcross ~ 13 K, suggesting that quantum tunneling dominates the relaxation process below that temperature. As the low-entropy spin ice state develops below Tice ~ 4 K, the spin relaxation time increases sharply with decreasing temperature, suggesting the emergence of a collective degree of freedom for which thermal relaxation processes again become important as the spins become highly correlated.

Dirty Spin Ice: The Effect of Dilution on Spin Freezing in Dy2Ti2O7

We have studied spin freezing in the diluted spin ice compound Dy2-xYxTi2O7 where the non-magnetic Y ions replace the magnetic Dy ions on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice. Magnetic a.c. and d.c. susceptibility data are presented with an analysis of relaxation times for dilutions of x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4. Site dilution apparently decreases the relative number of spins participating in the ice-like freezing near 16 K while leaving the freezing temperature unchanged. Correspondingly the distribution of relaxation times associated with the freezing is broadened only slightly with increasing dilution, suggesting that the freezing process observed near T = 16 K involves local correlations among the spins.

The QUEST RR Lyrae Survey: Confirmation of the Clump at 50 kpc and Other Over-Densities in the Outer Halo

We have measured the periods and light curves of 148 RR Lyrae variables from V=13.5 to 19.7 from the first 100 sq. degrees of the QUEST RR Lyrae survey. Approximately 55% of these stars belong to the clump of stars detected earlier by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. According to our measurements, this feature has ~10 times the background density of halo stars, spans at least 37.5 deg by 3.5 deg in right ascension and declination (>=30 by >=3 kpc), lies ~50 kpc from the Sun, and has a depth along the line of sight of ~5 kpc (1 sigma). These properties are consistent with the recent models that suggest it is a tidal stream from the Sgr dSph galaxy. The mean period of the type ab variables, 0.58 d, is also consistent. In addition, we have found two smaller over-densities in the halo, one of which may be related to the globular cluster Pal 5.

Thermodynamic Study of Excitations in a 3D Spin Liquid

In order to characterize thermal excitations in a frustrated spin liquid, we have examined the magnetothermodynamics of a model geometrically frustrated magnet. Our data demonstrate a crossover in the nature of the spin excitations between the spin liquid phase and the high-temperature paramagnetic state. The temperature dependence of both the specific heat and magnetization in the spin liquid phase can be fit within a simple model which assumes that the spin excitations have a gapped quadratic dispersion relation.

Discovery of the Bright Trans-Neptunian Object 2000 EB173

We describe the discovery circumstances and photometric properties of 2000 EB173, now one of the brightest trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) with opposition magnitude m_R=18.9 and also one of the largest Plutinos, found with the drift-scanning camera of the QUEST Collaboration, attached to the 1-m Schmidt telescope of the National Observatory of Venezuela. We measure B-V = 0.99 +/- 0.14 and V-R = 0.57 +/- 0.05, a red color observed for many fainter TNOs. At our magnitude limit m_R = 20.1 +/- 0.20, our single detection reveals a sky density of 0.015 (+0.034, -0.012) TNOs per deg^2 (the error bars are 68% confidence limits), consistent with fainter surveys showing a cumulative number proportional to 10^0.5m_R. Assuming an inclination distribution of TNOs with FWHM exceeding 30 deg, it is likely that one hundred to several hundred objects brighter than m_R=20.1 remain to be discovered.
