A viable Starobinsky-like inflationary scenario in the light of Planck and BICEP2 results

The recent CMB data from Planck and BICEP2 observations have opened a new window for inflationary cosmology. In this Essay we compare three Starobinsky-like inflationary scenarios: (i) the original Starobinsky proposal; (ii) a family of dynamically broken SUGRA models; and (iii) a class of "decaying" vacuum $Λ(H)$ cosmologies. We then focus on the $Λ(H)$ variant, which spans the complete cosmic history of the universe from an early inflationary stage, followed by the "graceful exit" into the standard radiation regime, the matter epoch and, finally, the late-time accelerated expansion. Computing the effective potential we find that the "running" $Λ(H)$ models also provide a prediction for the tensor-to-scalar ratio of the CMB spectrum, $r \simeq 0.16$, which is compatible to within $1σ$ with the value $r=0.20^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$ recently measured by the BICEP2 collaboration.

Consistency tests of the stability of fundamental couplings and unification scenarios

We test the consistency of several independent astrophysical measurements of fundamental dimensionless constants. In particular, we compare direct measurements of the fine-structure constant $α$ and the proton-to-electron mass ratio $μ=m_p/m_e$ (mostly in the optical/ultraviolet) with combined measurements of $α$, $μ$ and the proton gyromagnetic ratio $g_p$ (mostly in the radio band). We point out some apparent inconsistencies, which suggest that hidden systematics may be affecting some of the measurements. These findings demonstrate the importance of future more precise measurements with ALMA, ESPRESSO and ELT-HIRES. We also highlight some of the implications of the currently available measurements for fundamental physics, specifically for unification scenarios.

From inflation to dark energy through a dynamical Lambda: an attempt at alleviating fundamental cosmic puzzles

After decades of successful hot big-bang paradigm, Cosmology still lacks a framework in which the early inflationary phase of the universe smoothly matches the radiation epoch and evolves to the present `quasi' de Sitter spacetime. No less intriguing is that the current value of the effective vacuum energy density is vastly smaller than the value that triggered inflation. In this Essay we propose a new class of cosmologies capable of overcoming, or highly alleviating, some of these acute cosmic puzzles. Powered by a decaying vacuum energy density, the spacetime emerges from a pure nonsingular de Sitter vacuum stage, "gracefully" exits from inflation to a radiation phase followed by dark matter and vacuum regimes, and, finally, evolves to a late time de Sitter phase.

Higgs triplet effects in purely leptonic processes

We consider the effect of complex Higgs triplets on purely leptonic processes and survey the experimental constraints on the mass and couplings of their single and double charge members. Present day experiments tolerate values of the Yukawa couplings of these scalars at the level of the standard electroweak gauge couplings. We show that the proposed measurement of the ratio $R_{LCD}=σ(ν_μe)/ [σ(\bbν_μe) + σ(ν_e e )]$ would allow to explore a large region of the parameter space inaccessible to the usual ratio $R=σ(ν_μe)/σ(\bbν_μe)$.
