On the rate of convergence to steady state in a linear chromatography model

We study the rate of convergence to the steady state in the True Moving Bed model of linear chromatography, as a function of the six parameters that appear in the model. The model is a system of eight linear partial differential equations of hyperbolic type, coupled through the equations themselves and also through boundary conditions. We prove that the rate of convergence is given by a dominant eigenvalue, whose existence we prove by means of the Krein-Rutman Theorem, and by comparison arguments. We show how to construct a (not at all simple) characteristic function, whose roots are the eigenvalues. We also study the asymptotic profile of the solutions for large times, although this part is not purely analytical, but a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. Beyond the theoretical results, these models also offer explicit quantitative information: we apply all our results to a Case Study, namely the separation of omeprazole enantiomers. Finally, we consider a simpler limit case, where all the calculations become explicit.

Long-time behaviour of the correlated random walk system

In this work, we consider the so-called correlated random walk system (also known as correlated motion or persistent motion system), used in biological modelling, among other fields, such as chromatography. This is a linear system which can also be seen as a weakly damped wave equation with certain boundary conditions. We are interested in the long-time behaviour of its solutions. To be precise, we will prove that the decay of the solutions to this problem is of exponential form, where the optimal decay rate exponent is given by the dominant eigenvalue of the corresponding operator. This eigenvalue can be obtained as a particular solution of a system of transcendental equations. A complete description of the spectrum of the operator is provided, together with a comprehensive analysis of the corresponding eigenfunctions and their geometry.

A new example on Lyapunov stability

The purpose of this paper is to present an example of an Ordinary Differential Equation $x'=F(x)$ in the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\ell^2$ with $F$ being of class $\mathcal{C}^1$ in the Fréchet sense, such that the origin is an asymptotically stable equilibrium point but the spectrum of the linearized operator $DF(0)$ intersects the half-plane $\Re(z)>0$. The possible existence or not of an example of this kind has been an open question until now, to our knowledge. An analogous example, but of a non-invertible map instead of a flow defined by an ODE was recently constructed by the authors in a recent paper. The two examples use different techniques, but both are based on a classical example in Operator Theory due to S. Kakutani.

An example on Lyapunov stability and linearization

The purpose of this paper is to present an example of a C1 (in the Fréchet sense) discrete dynamical system in a infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space for which the origin is an exponentially asymptotically stable fixed point, but such that its derivative at the origin has spectral radius larger than unity, and this means that the origin is unstable in the sense of Lyapunov for the linearized system. The possible existence or not of an example of this kind has been an open question until now, to our knowledge. The construction is based on a classical example in Operator Theory due to Kakutani.

Optimal scalar products in the Standard Linear Viscoelastic Model

We study the third order in time linear dissipative wave equation known as the Standard Linear Viscoelastic Model, that appears also as the linearization of the so-called Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation in Nonlinear Acoustics. We complete the description in a paper by R. Marchand et al. (2012) of the spectrum of the generator of the corresponding group of operators and show that, apart from some exceptional values of the parameters, this generator can be made to be a normal operator with a new scalar product, with a complete set of orthogonal eigenfunctions. Using this property we also obtain sharper decay estimates for the solutions as time tends to infinity, both when the operator is normal or not.
