Properties and Stability of Hybrid Stars

We discuss the properties of neutron stars and their modifications due to the occurrence of hyperons and quarks in the core of the star. More specifically, we consider the general problem of exotic particles inside compact stars in light of the observed two-solar mass pulsar. In addition, we investigate neutron star cooling and a possible explanation of the recently measured cooling curve of the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cas A.

Dense Matter and Neutron Stars in Parity Doublet Models

We investigate the properties of dense matter and neutron stars. In particular we discuss model calculations based on the parity doublet picture of hadronic chiral symmetry. In this ansatz the onset of chiral symmetry restoration is reflected by the degeneracy of baryons and their parity partners. In this approach we also incorporate quarks as degrees of freedom to be able to study hybrid stars.

The hadronic SU(3) Parity Doublet Model for Dense Matter, its extension to quarks and the strange equation of state

A chiral model is introduced that is based on the parity doublet formulation of chiral symmetry including hyperonic degrees of freedom. The phase structure of the model is determined. Depending on the masses of the chiral partners the transition to the chirally restored phase shows a first-order line with critical endpoints as function of chemical potential and temperature in additional to the standard liquid-gas phase transition of self-bound nuclear matter. We extend the parity doublet model to describe the deconfinement phase transition which is in quantitative agreement with lattice data at $μ_B=0$. The phase diagram of the model is presented which shows a decoupling of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement. Loosening the constraint of strangeness conservation we also investigate the phase diagram at net strangeness density. We calculate the strangeness per baryon fraction and the baryon strangeness correlation factor, two quantities that are sensitive on deconfinement and that can be used to interpret lattice calculations.

Core-corona separation in the UrQMD hybrid model

We employ the UrQMD transport + hydrodynamics hybrid model to estimate the effects of a separation of the hot equilibrated core and the dilute corona created in high energy heavy ion collisions. It is shown that the fraction of the system which can be regarded as an equilibrated fireball changes over a wide range of energies. This has an impact especially on strange particle abundancies. We show that such a core corona separation allows to improve the description of strange particle ratios and flow as a function of beam energy as well as strange particle yields as a function of centrality.

Dimuon radiation at the CERN SPS within a (3+1)d hydrodynamic+cascade model

We analyze dilepton emission from hot and dense matter using a hybrid approach based on the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) transport model with an intermediate hydrodynamic stage for the description of heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies. During the hydrodynamic stage, the production of lepton pairs is described by radiation rates for a strongly interacting medium in thermal equilibrium. In the low mass region, hadronic thermal emission is evaluated assuming vector meson dominance including in-medium modifications of the rho meson spectral function through scattering from nucleons and pions in the heat bath. In the intermediate mass region, the hadronic rate is essentially determined by multi-pion annihilation processes. Emission from quark-antiquark annihilation in the quark gluon plasma is taken into account as well. When the system is sufficiently dilute, the hydrodynamic description breaks down and a transition to a final cascade stage is performed. In this stage dimuon emission is evaluated as commonly done in transport models. Focusing on the enhancement with respect to the contribution from long-lived hadron decays after freezout observed at the SPS in the low mass region of the dilepton spectra, the relative importance of the different thermal contributions and of the two dynamical stages is investigated. We find that three separated regions can be identified in the invariant mass spectra. Whereas the very low and the intermediate mass regions mostly receive contribution from the thermal dilepton emission, the region around the vector meson peak is dominated by the cascade emission. Above the rho-peak region the spectrum is driven by QGP radiation. Analysis of the dimuon transverse mass spectra reveals that the thermal hadronic emission shows an evident mass ordering not present in the emission from the QGP.

Directed, Elliptic and Triangular Flows in Asymmetric Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper we propose to thoroughly investigate asymmetric nuclear collisions both in the fixed target mode at the laboratory energy below 5 GeV per nucleon and in the collider mode with a center of mass energy below 11 GeV per nucleon. Using the UrQMD transport model, we demonstrate a strong enhancement of directed and elliptic flow coefficients for the midcentral asymmetric nuclear collisions compared to symmetric collisions. We argue that such an enhancement is due to the disappearance of the nuclear shadowing effect on the side of the smaller projectile nucleus. An analysis of the energy and centrality dependencies of the directed, elliptic and triangular flows at midrapidity shows us their sensitivity to the details of the employed model of hadronic interaction. In general, the flow patters found for asymmetric nuclear collisions have a very rich and complicated structure of energy and centrality dependencies compared to the flows found for symmetric collisions and are worth to be investigated experimentally. The directed, elliptic, and triangular flow coefficients are computed for target nuclei containing high density fluctuations and thoroughly compared with that ones obtained in the absence of such fluctuations.

Production of spectator hypermatter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the formation of large hyper-fragments in relativistic heavy-ion collisions within two transport models, DCM and UrQMD. Our goal is to explore a new mechanism for the formation of strange nuclear systems via capture of hyperons by relatively cold spectator matter produced in semi-peripheral collisions. We investigate basic characteristics of the produced hyper-spectators and evaluate the production probabilities of multi-strange systems. Advantages of the proposed mechanisms over an alternative coalescence mechanism are analysed. We also discuss how such systems can be detected taking into account the background of free hyperons. This investigation is important for the development of new experimental methods for producing hyper-nuclei in peripheral relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, which are now underway at GSI and are planned for the future FAIR and NICA facilities.

Hot and dense matter in quark-hadron models

We present a general approach to incorporate hadronic as well as quark degrees of freedom in a unified approach. This approach implements the correct degrees of freedom at high as well as low temperatures and densities. An effective Polyakov loop field serves as the order parameter for deconfinement. We employ a well-tested hadronic flavor-SU(3) model based on a chirally symmetric formulation that reproduces properties of ground state nuclear matter and yields good descriptions of nuclei and hypernuclei. Excluded volume effects simulating the finite size of the hadrons drive the transition to quarks at high temperatures and densities. We study the phase structure of the model and the transition to the quark gluon plasma and compare results to lattice gauge calculations.

Hadronic and electromagnetic probes of hot and dense matter in a Boltzmann+Hydrodynamics model of relativistic nuclear collisions

We present recent results on bulk observables and electromagnetic probes obtained using a hybrid approach based on the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics transport model with an intermediate hydrodynamic stage for the description of heavy-ion collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. After briefly reviewing the main results for particle multiplicities, elliptic flow, transverse momentum and rapidity spectra, we focus on photon and dilepton emission from hot and dense hadronic matter.

An effective chiral Hadron-Quark Equation of State

We construct an effective model for the QCD equation of state, taking into account chiral symmetry restoration as well as the deconfinement phase transition. The correct asymptotic degrees of freedom at the high and low temperature limits are included (quarks $\leftrightarrow$ hadrons). The model shows a rapid crossover for both order parameters, as is expected from lattice calculations. We then compare the thermodynamic properties of the model at $μ_B=0$ which turn out to be in qualitative agreement with lattice data, while apparent quantitative differences can be attributed to hadronic contributions and excluded volume corrections. Furthermore we discuss the effects of a repulsive vector type quark interaction at finite baryon number densities on the resulting phase diagram of the model. Our current model is able to reproduce a first-order liquid gas phase transition as expected, but does not show any signs of a first order deconfinement or chiral phase transition. Both transitions rather appear as a very wide crossover in which heavily medium modified hadron coexist with free quarks.

The problem of repulsive quark interactions - Lattice versus mean field models

We calculate the 2nd and 4th order quark number susceptibilities at zero baryochemical potential, using a PNJL approach and an approach which includes, in a single model, quark and hadronic degrees of freedom. We observe that the susceptibilities are very sensitive to possible quark-quark vector interactions. Compared to lattice data our results suggest that above $T_c$ any mean field type of repulsive vector interaction can be excluded from model calculations. Below $T_c$ our results show only very weak sensitivity on the strength of the quark and hadronic vector interaction. The best description of lattice data around $T_c$ is obtained for a case of coexistence of hadronic and quark degrees of freedom.

Hydrodynamics with a chiral hadronic equation of state including quark degrees of freedom

We investigate the influence of a deconfinement phase transition on the dynamics of hot and dense nuclear matter. We apply a hybrid model where an intermediate hydrodynamics stage is employed for the the hot and dense stage of a system created in head-on collisions of Pb+Pb/Au+Au at beam energies from $2-160A $GeV. The initial and final interactions are performed by a microscopic transport approach (UrQMD). An equation of state that incorporates a critical end point (CEP) in line with lattice data is used. It follows from coupling the Polyakov loop (as an order parameter for deconfinement) to a chiral hadronic $SU(3)_f$ model. In this configuration the EoS describes chiral restoration as well as the deconfinemt phase transition. We compare the results obtained in this approach to results from a non interacting hadron resonance gas, focussing on observables deemed to be sensitive to the phase transition to the quark gluon plasma.

An effective chiral Hadron-Quark Equation of State Part I: Zero baryochemical potential

We then investigate the thermodynamic properties of the model at $μ_B=0$. All thermodynamic quantities are in qualitative agreement with lattice data, while apparent quantitative differences can be attributed to hadronic contributions and excluded volume corrections.

A transport calculation with an embedded (3+1)d hydrodynamic evolution: Elliptic flow as a function of transverse momentum at SPS energies

The transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow of pions calculated in a full (3+1)d Boltzmann approach with an intermediate hydrodynamic stage for heavy ion reactions for CERN-SPS energies is discussed in the context of the experimental data. At higher SPS energies, where the pure transport calculation cannot account for the high elliptic flow values, the smaller mean free path in the hydrodynamic evolution leads to larger elliptic flow. Due to the more realistic initial conditions and the incorporated hadronic rescattering the results are in line with the experimental data. Within this integrated dynamical approach different equations of state are applied without adjusting the initial state and the freeze-out conditions. We employ a hadron gas equation of state to investigate the differences in the dynamics and viscosity effects, a chiral equation of state with a moderate first order phase transition and a critical endpoint and a bag model equation of state with a large latent heat. The elliptic flow results are shown to be rather insensitive to changes in the equation of state.

(3+1)-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Expansion with a Critical Point from Realistic Initial Conditions

We investigate a (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic expansion of the hot and dense system created in head-on collisions of Pb+Pb/Au+Au at beam energies from $5-200A$ GeV. An equation of state that incorporates a critical end point (CEP) in line with the lattice data is used. The necessary initial conditions for the hydrodynamic evolution are taken from a microscopic transport approach (UrQMD). We compare the properties of the initial state and the full hydrodynamical calculation with an isentropic expansion employing an initial state from a simple overlap model. We find that the specific entropy ($S/A$) from both initial conditions is very similar and only depends on the underlying equation of state. Using the chiral (hadronic) equation of state we investigate the expansion paths for both initial conditions. Defining a critical area around the critical point, we show at what beam energies one can expect to have a sizable fraction of the system close to the critical point. Finally, we emphasise the importance of the equation of state of strongly interacting matter, in the (experimental) search for the CEP.
