Frustrated magnetism of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains as a statistical-mechanical monomer-dimer problem

It is evidenced that effective lattice-gas models of hard-core monomers and dimers afford a proper description of low-temperature features of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains. Besides monomeric particles assigned within the localized-magnon theory to bound one- and two-magnon eigenstates, the effective monomer-dimer lattice-gas model additionally includes dimeric particles assigned to a singlet-tetramer (singlet-hexamer) state as a cornerstone of dimer-tetramer (tetramer-hexamer) ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond (octahedral) chain. A feasibility of the effective description is confirmed through the exact diagonalization and finite-temperature Lanczos methods. Both quantum spin chains display rich ground-state phase diagrams including discontinuous as well as continuous field-driven phase transitions, whereby the specific heat shows in vicinity of the former phase transitions an extraordinary low-temperature peak coming from a highly-degenerate manifold of low-lying excitations.

Fractional magnetization plateaux of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice: effect of quantum XY interdimer coupling

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice is considered within the many-body perturbation theory developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the Heisenberg intradimer and Ising interdimer interactions. The former model is widely used for a description of magnetic properties of the layered compound SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, which exhibits a series of fractional magnetization plateaux at sufficiently low temperatures. Using the novel type of many-body perturbation theory we have found the effective model of interacting triplet excitations with the extended hard-core repulsion, which accurately recovers 1/8, 1/6 and 1/4 magnetization plateaux for moderate values of the interdimer coupling. A possible existence of a striking quantum phase of bound triplons is also revealed at low enough magnetic fields.

Heterobimetallic Dy-Cu coordination compound as a classical-quantum ferrimagnetic chain of regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins

A classical-quantum chain composed of regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins is rigorously solved by considering two distinct local anisotropy axes of the Ising spins. The ground-state phase diagram and magnetization curves are examined depending on a spatial orientation of the applied magnetic field. The phase diagram totally consists of four distinct phases and a few macroscopically degenerate points, where an outstanding coexistence of perfect order and complete disorder occurs within the so-called 'half-fire, half-ice' state. The zero-temperature magnetization curves generally exhibit a smooth dependence on a magnetic field owing to a canting angle between two coplanar anisotropy axes of the Ising spins, which enforces a misalignment of the magnetization vector from a direction of the applied magnetic field. It is evidenced that the investigated spin-chain model reproduces magnetic features of the heterobimetallic coordination compound Dy(NO)$_{3}$(DMSO)$_{2}$Cu(opba)(DMSO)$_{2}$ (DMSO=dimethylsulfoxide, opba=orthophenylenebisoxamato). The high-field magnetization data reported for the powder sample of this polymeric coordination compound generally display a substantial smoothing on account of a powder averaging.

Effect of the Canting of Local Anisotropy Axes on Ground-State Properties of a Ferrimagnetic Chain with Regularly Alternating Ising and Heisenberg Spins

The effect of the canting of local anisotropy axes on the ground-state phase diagram and magnetization of a ferrimagnetic chain with regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins is exactly examined in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field. It is shown that individual contributions of Ising and Heisenberg spins to the total magnetization basically depend on the spatial orientation of the magnetic field and the canting angle between two different local anisotropy axes of the Ising spins.

Thermal entanglement in a spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between nodal Ising spins

We consider a spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain with the XYZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers, the nearest-neighbor Ising coupling between the nodal and interstitial spins, respectively, and the second-neighbor Ising coupling between the nodal spins. The ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain exhibits several intriguing phases due to the XY anisotropy and the second-neighbor interaction, whereas the model can be exactly solved using the transfer-matrix technique. The quantum entanglement within the Heisenberg spin dimers is studied through a bipartite measure concurrence, which is calculated from a relevant reduced density operator. The concurrence may either show a standard thermal dependence with a monotonous decline with increasing temperature or a more peculiar thermal dependence accompanied with reentrant behavior of the concurrence. It is conjectured that the bipartite entanglement between the interstitial Heisenberg spin pairs in the natural mineral azurite is quite insensitive to the applied magnetic field and it persists up to approximately 30 Kelvins.

Magnetization process and magnetocaloric effect of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg cuboctahedron

Magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg cuboctahedron are examined using exact numerical diagonalization depending on a relative strength of the exchange anisotropy. While the Ising cuboctahedron exhibits in a low-temperature magnetization curve only one-third magnetization plateau, the XXZ Heisenberg cuboctahedron displays another four intermediate plateaux at zero, one-sixth, one-half and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization. The novel magnetization plateaux generally extend over a wider range of magnetic fields with increasing of a quantum ($xy$) part of the XXZ exchange interaction. It is shown that the XXZ Heisenberg cuboctahedron exhibits in a vicinity of all magnetization jumps anomalous thermodynamic behavior accompanied with an enhanced magnetocaloric effect.

Isothermal Entropy Change and Adiabatic Change of Temperature of the Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Ising Octahedron and Dodecahedron

The spin-1/2 Ising octahedron and dodecahedron with a unique antiferromagnetic interaction display an outstanding magnetization jump at zero magnetic field, which consequently leads to a giant magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization. In the present work we report temperature dependences of two basic magnetocaloric response functions: the isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic change of temperature. It is shown that the Ising octahedron and dodecahedron generally exhibit a large negative isothermal entropy change upon increasing of the magnetic field, which serves in evidence of their cooling performance.

Enhanced magnetocaloric effect in a proximity of magnetization steps and jumps of spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg regular polyhedra

The magnetization process and adiabatic demagnetization of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg clusters with the shape of regular polyhedra (tetrahedron, octahedron, cube, icosahedron and dodecahedron) are examined using the exact diagonalization method. It is demonstrated that a quantum (xy) part of the XXZ exchange interaction is a primary cause for presence of additional intermediate magnetization plateaux and steps, which are totally absent in the limiting Ising case. The only exception to this rule is the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg tetrahedron, which shows just a quantitative shift of the level-crossing fields related to two magnetization steps. It is evidenced that the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg regular polyhedra exhibit an enhanced magnetocaloric effect in a proximity of the magnetization steps and jumps, which are accompanied with a rapid drop (rise) of temperature just above (below) of the level-crossing field when the magnetic field is removed adiabatically.

Spin frustration and fermionic entanglement in an exactly solved hybrid diamond chain with the localized Ising spins and mobile electrons

The strongly correlated spin-electron system on a diamond chain containing localized Ising spins on its nodal lattice sites and mobile electrons on its interstitial sites is exactly solved in a magnetic field using the transfer-matrix method. We have investigated in detail all available ground states, the magnetization processes, the spin-spin correlation functions around an elementary plaquette, fermionic quantum concurrence and spin frustration. It is shown that the fermionic entanglement between mobile electrons hopping on interstitial sites and the kinetically-induced spin frustration are closely related yet independent phenomena. In the ground state, quantum entanglement only appears within a frustrated unsaturated paramagnetic phase, while thermal fluctuations can promote some degree of quantum entanglement above the non-frustrated ground states with saturated paramagnetic or classical ferrimagnetic spin arrangements.

Is order-by-disorder present or absent in a highly frustrated region of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on triangulated Husimi lattices?

The geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on triangulated Husimi lattices is exactly solved by combining the generalized star-triangle transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. The ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are rigorously calculated along with both sublattice magnetizations of the Ising and Heisenberg spins. It is evidenced that the Ising-Heisenberg model on triangulated Husimi lattices with two or three inter-connected triangles-in-triangles units displays in a highly frustrated region a quantum disorder irrespective of temperature, whereas the same model on triangulated Husimi lattices with a greater connectivity of triangles-in-triangles units exhibits at low enough temperatures an outstanding quantum order due to the order-by-disorder mechanism. The quantum reduction of both sublattice magnetizations in the peculiar quantum ordered state gradually diminishes with increasing the coordination number of underlying Husimi lattice.

Low-temperature thermodynamics of spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with Ising and Heisenberg interactions

We consider an exactly solvable version of the quantum spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer couplings. The investigated quantum spin system exhibits at zero temperature fractional plateaux at 1/4 and 1/2 of the saturation magnetization and it has a highly degenerate ground state at critical fields where the magnetization jumps. We study the field dependence of the specific heat at low temperature. The lattice-gas description is formulated in a vicinity of critical fields to explain the low-temperature behaviour of specific heat.

Ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising two-leg ladder with XYZ intra-rung coupling

The quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with an anisotropic XYZ Heisenberg intra-rung interaction and Ising inter-rung interactions is treated by means of a rigorous approach based on the unitary transformation. The particular case of the considered model with X-X intra-rung interaction resembles a quantum compass ladder with additional frustrating diagonal Ising interactions. Using an appropriately chosen unitary transformation, the model under investigation may be reduced to a transverse Ising chain with composite spins, and one may subsequently find the ground state quite rigorously. We obtain a ground-state phase diagram and analyze the interplay of the competition between several factors: the XYZ anisotropy in the Heisenberg intra-rung coupling, the Ising interaction along the legs, and the frustrating diagonal Ising interaction. The investigated model shows extraordinarily diverse ground-state phase diagrams including several unusual quantum ordered phases, two different disordered quantum paramagnetic phases, as well as discontinuous or continuous quantum phase transitions between those phases.

Ferrimagnetic spin-1/2 chain of alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins in arbitrarily oriented magnetic field

The ferrimagnetic spin-1/2 chain composed of alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field is exactly solved using the spin-rotation transformation and the transfer-matrix method. It is shown that the low-temperature magnetization process depends basically on a spatial orientation of the magnetic field. A sharp stepwise magnetization curve with a marked intermediate plateau, which emerges for the magnetic field applied along the easy-axis direction of the Ising spins, becomes smoother and the intermediate plateau shrinks if the external field is tilted from the easy-axis direction. The magnetization curve of a polycrystalline system is also calculated by performing powder averaging of the derived magnetization formula. The proposed spin-chain model brings an insight into high-field magnetization data of 3d-4f bimetallic polymeric compound Dy(NO_3)(DMSO)_2Cu(opba)(DMSO)_2, which provides an interesting experimental realization of the ferrimagnetic chain composed of two different but regularly alternating spin-1/2 magnetic ions Dy^{3+} and Cu^{2+} that are reasonably approximated by the notion of Ising and Heisenberg spins, respectively.

Magnetization process in the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on decorated Bethe lattices

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated Bethe lattices is exactly solved in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field by combining the decoration-iteration mapping transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. In particular, the ground state and low-temperature magnetization process of the ferrimagnetic version of the considered model is investigated in detail. Three different magnetization scenarios with up to two consecutive fractional magnetization plateaus were found, whereas the intermediate magnetization plateau may either correspond to the classical ferrimagnetic spin arrangement and/or the field-induced quantum ferrimagnetic spin ordering without any classical counterpart.

Phase transitions of geometrically frustrated mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated planar lattices

Phase transitions of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on several decorated planar lattices consisting of interconnected diamonds are investigated within the framework of the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The main attention is paid to the systematic study of the finite-temperature phase diagrams in dependence on the lattice topology. The critical behaviour of the hybrid quantum-classical Ising-Heisenberg model is compared with the relevant behaviour of its semi-classical Ising analogue. It is shown that both models on diamond-like decorated planar lattices exhibit a striking critical behaviour including reentrant phase transitions. The higher the lattice coordination number is, the more pronounced reentrance may be detected.

Ground-state properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising bond alternating chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Ground-state energy is exactly calculated for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising bond alternating chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Under certain condition, which relates a strength of the Ising, Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the ground-state energy exhibits an interesting nonanalytic behavior accompanied with a gapless excitation spectrum.

Multiple frustration-induced plateaus in a magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain

Magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is examined by combining three exact analytical techniques: Kambe projection method, decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. Multiple frustration-induced plateaus in a magnetization process of this geometrically frustrated system are found provided that a relative ratio between the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg- and Ising-type interactions exceeds some particular value. By contrast, there is just a single magnetization plateau if the frustrating Heisenberg interaction is sufficiently small compared to the Ising one.
