Properties of a classical spin liquid: the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet

We study the low-temperature behaviour of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest neighbour interactions on the pyrochlore lattice. Because of geometrical frustration, the ground state of this model has an extensive number of degrees of freedom. We show, by analysing the effects of small fluctuations around the ground-state manifold, and from the results of Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, that the system is disordered at all temperatures, T, and has a finite relaxation time, which varies as 1/T for small T.

Diffusion in a Random Velocity Field: Spectral Properties of a Non-Hermitian Fokker-Planck Operator

We study spectral properties of the Fokker-Planck operator that describes particles diffusing in a quenched random velocity field. This random operator is non-Hermitian and has eigenvalues occupying a finite area in the complex plane. We calculate the eigenvalue density and averaged one-particle Green's function, for weak disorder and dimension d>2. We relate our results to the time-evolution of particle density, and compare them with numerical simulations.

Spectral Rigidity and Eigenfunction Correlations at the Anderson Transition

The statistics of energy levels for a disordered conductor are considered in the critical energy window near the mobility edge. It is shown that, if critical wave functions are multifractal, the one-dimensional gas of levels on the energy axis is ``compressible'', in the sense that the variance of the level number in an interval is $< (δN)^{2} > = χ $ for $ >> 1$. The compressibility, $χ=η/2d$, is given ``exactly'' in terms of the multifractal exponent $η=d-D_2$ at the mobility edge in a $d$-dimensional system.

Exact results for interacting electrons in high Landau levels

We study a two-dimensional electron system in a magnetic field with a fermion hardcore interaction and without disorder. Projecting the Hamiltonian onto the n-th Landau level, we show that the Hartree-Fock theory is exact in the limit n \rightarrow \infty, for the high temperature, uniform density phase of an infinite system; for a finite-size system, it is exact at all temperatures. In addition, we show that a charge-density wave arises below a transition temperature T_t. Using Landau theory, we construct a phase diagram which contains both unidirectional and triangular charge-density wave phases. We discuss the unidirectional charge-density wave at zero temperature and argue that quantum fluctuations are unimportant in the large-n limit. Finally, we discuss the accuracy of the Hartree-Fock approximation for potentials with a nonzero range such as the Coulomb interaction.

Random Walks through the Ensemble: Linking Spectral Statistics with Wavefunction Correlations in Disordered Metals

We use a random walk in the ensemble of impurity configurations to generate a Brownian motion model for energy levels in disordered conductors. Treating arc-length along the random walk as fictitous time, the resulting Langevin equation relates spectral statistics to eigenfunction correlations. Solving this equation at energy scales large compared with the mean level spacing, we obtain the spectral form factor, and its parametric dependence.

Fictitious Level Dynamics: A Novel Approach to Spectral Statistics in Disordered Conductors

We establish a new approach to calculating spectral statistics in disordered conductors, by considering how energy levels move in response to changes in the impurity potential. We use this fictitious dynamics to calculate the spectral form factor in two ways. First, describing the dynamics using a Fokker-Planck equation, we make a physically motivated decoupling, obtaining the spectral correlations in terms of the quantum return probability. Second, from an identity which we derive between two- and three-particle correlation functions, we make a mathematically controlled decoupling to obtain the same result. We also calculate weak localization corrections to this result, and show for two dimensional systems (which are of most interest) that corrections vanish to three-loop order.

Models for the integer quantum Hall effect: the network model, the Dirac equation, and a tight-binding Hamiltonian

We consider models for the plateau transition in the integer quantum Hall effect. Starting from the network model, we construct a mapping to the Dirac Hamiltonian in two dimensions. In the general case, the Dirac Hamiltonian has randomness in the mass, the scalar potential, and the vector potential. Separately, we show that the network model can also be associated with a nearest neighbour, tight-binding Hamiltonian.

Three-dimensional disordered conductors in a strong magnetic field: surface states and quantum Hall plateaus

We study localization in layered, three-dimensional conductors in strong magnetic fields. We demonstrate the existence of three phases - insulator, metal and quantized Hall conductor - in the two-dimensional parameter space obtained by varying the Fermi energy and the interlayer coupling strength. Transport in the quantized Hall conductor occurs via extended surface states. These surface states constitute a subsystem at a novel critical point, which we describe using a new, directed network model.

Theory of Spin-Split Cyclotron Resonance in the Extreme Quantum Limit

We present an interpretation of recent cyclotron resonance experiments on the two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We show that the observed dependence of the resonance spectrum on Landau level occupancy and temperature arises from the interplay of three factors: spin-splitting of the cyclotron frequency; thermal population of the two spin states; and coupling of the resonances for each spin orientation by Coulomb interactions. In addition, we derive an $f$-sum rule which allows spin polarisation to be determined directly from resonance spectra.

A Unified Model for Two Localisation Problems: Electron States in Spin-Degenerate Landau Levels, and in a Random Magnetic Field

A single model is presented which represents both of the two apparently unrelated localisation problems of the title. The phase diagram of this model is examined using scaling ideas and numerical simulations. It is argued that the localisation length in a spin-degenerate Landau level diverges at two distinct energies, with the same critical behaviour as in a spin-split Landau level, and that all states of a charged particle moving in two dimensions, in a random magnetic field with zero average, are localised.
