Optical Absorption Spectra of Bipolarons

The absorption of large bipolarons is investigated using the path-integral method. The response of a bipolaron to an external electromagnetic field is derived in the framework of the memory-function approach. The bipolaron optical absorption spectrum consists of a series of relatively narrow peaks. The peculiarities of the bipolaron optical absorption as a function of the frequency of the electromagnetic field may be attributed to the transitions involving relaxed excited states and scattering states of a bipolaron.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a multiply connected Laguerre-Gaussian optical trap

The quantized vortex state is investigated in a Bose-Einstein condensate, confined in a multiply connected geometry formed by a Laguerre-Gaussian optical trap. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation variationally, we show that the criterium for vortex stability is that the interatomic interaction strength must exceed a critical interaction strength. The time evolution of a freely expanding Laguerre-Gaussian condensate with a vortex is calculated, and used to derive the interference pattern of such a condensate overlapping with a parabolically trapped condensate.

Sum Rule for the Optical Absorption of an Interacting Many-Polaron Gas

A sum rule for the first frequency moment of the optical absorption of a many-polaron system is derived, taking into account many-body effects in the system of constituent charge carriers of the many-polaron system. In our expression for the sum rule, the electron-phonon coupling and the many-body effects in the electron (or hole) system formally decouple, so that the many-body effects can be treated to the desired level of approximation by the choice of the dynamical structure factor of the electron (hole) gas. We calculate correction factors to take into account both low and high experimental cutoff frequencies.

Optical Absorption of an Interacting Many-Polaron Gas

The optical absorption of a many (continuum) polaron gas is derived in the framework of a variational approach at zero temperature and weak or intermediate electron-phonon coupling strength. We derive a compact formula for the optical conductivity of the many-polaron system taking into account many-body effects in the electron or hole system. Within the method presented here, these effects are contained completely in the dynamical structure factor of the electron or hole system. This allows to build on well-established studies of the interacting electron gas. Based on this approach a novel feature in the absorption spectrum of the many-polaron gas, related to the emission of a plasmon together with a phonon, is identified. As an application and illustration of the technique, we compare the theoretical many-polaron optical absorption spectrum as derived in the present work with the `d-band' absorption feature in Nd$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$. Similarities are shown between the theoretically and the experimentally derived first frequency moment of the optical absorption of a family of differently doped Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-y}$ materials.

Density of a gas of spin polarized fermions in a magnetic field

For a fermion gas with equally spaced energy levels that is subjected to a magnetic field, the particle density is calculated. The derivation is based on the path integral approach for identical particles, in combination with the inversion techniques for the generating function of the static response functions. Explicit results are presented for the ground state density as a function of the magnetic field with a number of particles ranging from 1 to 45.

Shape-induced magnetic anisotropy in dilute magnetic alloys

We extend the theory of the surface-induced magnetic anisotropy to mesoscopic samples with arbitrary geometry. The shape-induced anisotropy of impurity spins in small brick-shaped grains of dilute magnetic alloys is studied in detail. The surface-induced blocking of a magnetic-impurity spin is shown to be very sensitive to geometric parameters of a grain. This implies that the apparent discrepancy between the experimental data of different groups on the size dependence of the Kondo resistivity can result from different microstructure of the used samples. In order to interpret recent experimental data on the anomalous Hall effect in thin polycrystalline Fe doped Au films, we analyse the magnetisation of impurity spins as a function of the impurity position and of the grain shape.

Polarons

A conduction electron (or hole) together with its self-induced polarisation in a polar semiconductor or an ionic crystal forms a quasi-particle, which is called a polaron. The polaron concept is of interest, not only because it describes the particular physical properties of charge carriers in polarizable solids but also because it constitutes an interesting field theoretical model of a fermion interacting with a scalar boson field. The early work on polarons was concerned with general theoretical formulations and approximations, which now constitute the standard polaron theory, and with experiments on cyclotron resonance and transport properties. Because of the more recent interest in the two-dimensional electron gas, the study of the polaron in two dimensions became important. Again cyclotron resonance, and therefore the behaviour of polarons in magnetic fields, was a key issue. When two electrons (or two holes) interact with each other simultaneously through the Coulomb force and via the electron-phonon-electron interaction, either two independent polarons can occur or a bound state of two polarons - a bipolaron - can arise. Bipolarons have been considered to possibly play a role in high-Tc superconductivity. The polaron concept has been extended to several systems where one or many fermions interact with a bath of bosons, e. g., small polaron, piezopolaron, polaronic exciton, spin - or magnetic - polaron, "ripplonic polaron", "plasmaron", "hydrated polarons" etc.

Many-polaron system confined to a quantum dot: ground-state energy and optical absorption

We find for the first time the ground state energy and the optical absorption spectra for N electrons (holes) interacting with each other and with the longitudinal optical (LO) phonons at an arbitrary electron-phonon coupling strength $α$ in a parabolic confinement potential. A recently developed path integral formalism for identical particles is used in order to account for the fermion statistics. The approach is applicable to closed and open shells. Using an extension of the Jensen-Feynman variational principle, the ground state energy of the N-polarons system in a parabolic confinement potential is analyzed as a function of N and $α$. A ferromagnetic-to-nonmagnetic transition is shown to occur between states with different total spin of the system in the case of strong electron-phonon interaction. This transition is manifested through the optical absorption spectra and should be experimentally observable. Strong mixing between zero-phonon and one-phonon states is revealed in the optical absorption spectrum, when the confinement frequency parameter is in resonance with the LO phonon frequency ("confinement-phonon resonance"). Moments of the optical absorption spectra are calculated for a N-polaron system in a parabolic quantum dot.

Addendum on rotational properties of confined bosons: time-inversion referencing

In this addendum we introduce the concept of time-inversion referencing. This is an extension of hypertext allowing authors to cite papers that where not yet published (or even not yet written) when they publish a manuscript. We are convinced that this concept will prove very useful especially when adjustments to the so-called intellectual property rights have to be made. We apply the concept to our paper on rotational properties of trapped bosons.

Bipolaron Binding in Quantum Wires

A theory of bipolaron states in quantum wires with a parabolic potential well is developed applying the Feynman variational principle. The basic parameters of the bipolaron ground state (the binding energy, the number of phonons in the bipolaron cloud, the effective mass, and the bipolaron radius) are studied as a function of sizes of the potential well. Two cases are considered in detail: a cylindrical quantum wire and a planar quantum wire. Analytical expressions for the bipolaron parameters are obtained at large and small sizes of the quantum well. It is shown that at $R\gg 1$ [where $R$ means the radius (halfwidth) of a cylindrical (planar) quantum wire, expressed in Feynman units], the influence of confinement on the bipolaron binding energy is described by the function $\sim 1/R^{2}$ for both cases, while at small sizes this influence is different in each case. In quantum wires, the bipolaron binding energy $W(R) $ increases logarithmically with decreasing radius. The shapes and the sizes of a nanostructure, which are favorable for observation of stable bipolaron states, are determined.

Comment on: rotational properties of trapped bosons

Based on the Hellman-Feynman theorem it is shown that the average square radius of a cloud of interacting bosons in a parabolic well can be derived from their free energy. As an application, the temperature dependence of the moment of inertia of non-interacting bosons in a parabolic trap is determined as a function of the number of bosons. Well below the critical condensation temperature, the Bose-Einstein statistics are found to substantially reduce the moment of inertia of this system, as compared to a gas of ``distinguishable'' particles in a parabolic well.

Quantum transport in the cylindrical nanosize silicon-based MOSFET

A model is developed for a detailed investigation of the current flowing through a cylindrical nanosize MOSFET with a close gate electrode. The quantum mechanical features of the lateral charge transport are described by Wigner distribution function which is explicitly dealing with electron scattering due to acoustic phonons and acceptor impurities. A numerical simulation is carried out to obtain a set of I-V characteristics for various channel lengths. It is demonstrated that inclusion of the collision term in the numerical simulation is important for low values of the source-drain voltage. The calculations have further shown that the scattering leads to an increase of the electron density in the channel thereby smoothing out the threshold kink in I-V characteristics. An analysis of the electron phase-space distribution shows that scattering does not prevent electrons from flowing through the channel as a narrow stream, and that features of both ballistic and diffusive transport may be observed simultaneously.

Impurity spin magnetization of thin Fe doped Au films

In order to probe the influence of the surface-induced anisotropy on the impurity spin magnetization, we measure the anomalous Hall effect in thin AuFe films at magnetic fields up to 15 T. The observed suppression of the anomalous Hall resistivity at low fields as well as the appearance of a minimum in the differential Hall resistivity at higher fields can be explained by our theoretical model which takes into account the influence of a polycrystalline film structure on the surface-induced anisotropy. Our results imply that the apparent discrepancy between different experimental results for the size effects in dilute magnetic alloys can be linked to a different microstructure of the samples.

Many Body Diffusion and Interacting Electrons in a Harmonic Confinement

We present numerically exact energy estimates for two-dimensional electrons in a parabolic confinement. By application of an extension of the recently introduced many-body diffusion algorithm, the ground-state energies are simulated very efficiently. The new algorithm relies on partial antisymmetrization under permutation of particle coordinates. A comparison is made with earlier theoretical results for that system.

The Partition Function of a Spinor Gas

For a spinor gas, i.e., a mixture of identical particles with several internal degrees of freedom, we derive the partition function in terms of the Feynman-Kac functionals of polarized components. As an example we study a spin-1 Bose gas with the spins subjected to an external magnetic field and confined by a parabolic potential. From the analysis of the free energy for a finite number of particles, we find that the specific heat of this ideal spinor gas as a function of temperature has two maxima: one is related to a Schottky anomaly, due to the lifting of the spin degeneracy by the external field, the other maximum is the signature of Bose-Einstein condensation.

Superconductivity in a Mesoscopic Double Square Loop: Effect of Imperfections

We have generalized the network approach to include the effects of short-range imperfections in order to analyze recent experiments on mesoscopic superconducting double loops. The presence of weakly scattering imperfections causes gaps in the phase boundary $B(T)$ or $Φ(T)$ for certain intervals of $T$, which depend on the magnetic flux penetrating each loop. This is accompanied by a critical temperature $T_c(Φ)$, showing a smooth transition between symmetric and antisymmetric states. When the scattering strength of imperfections increases beyond a certain limit, gaps in the phase boundary $T_c(B)$ or $T_c(Φ)$ appear for values of magnetic flux lying in intervals around half-integer $Φ_0=hc/2e$. The critical temperature corresponding to these values of magnetic flux is determined mainly by imperfections in the central branch. The calculated phase boundary is in good agreement with experiment.

Condensation and interaction range in harmonic boson traps: a variational approach

For a gas of N bosons interacting through a two-body Morse potential a variational bound of the free energy of a confined system is obtained. The calculation method is based on the Feynman-Kac functional projected on the symmetric representation. Within the harmonic approximation a variational estimate of the effect of the interaction range on the existence of many-particle bound states, and on the N-T phase diagram is obtained.

The center-of-mass response of confined systems

For confined systems of identical particles, either bosons or fermions, we argue that the parabolic nature of the confinement potential is a prerequisite for the non-dissipative character of the center of mass response to a uniform probe. For an excitation in a parabolic confining potential, the half width of the density response function depends nevertheless quantitatively on properties of the internal degrees of freedom, as is illustrated here for an ideal confined gas of identical particles with harmonic interparticle interactions.
