X-ray Fractional Orbital Angular Momentum from Coherent Magnetic Scattering

Artificial spin ice (ASI) based on a square lattice with a topological defect are known to generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) in diffracted X-ray beams. A previous investigation of ASI with even-charge topological defects showed both charge and magnetic X-ray scattering yield photon OAM, but these were confined to integer OAM values. However, the period of the square ASI's antiferromagnetic ground state is twice the period of the structural ground state, which should lead to fractional OAM from magnetic scattering when the topological defect has odd-charge. We employed photoemission electron microscopy to confirm that these ASIs order into antiferromagnetic ground states with protected superdomain walls that provide the phase discontinuity required for fractional OAM. Resonant, coherent X-ray scattering from ASIs with topological defects of charge 1 yields integer-valued X-ray OAM at structural charge peaks and fractional X-ray OAM at magnetic peaks. For thermally active ASIs, the fractional OAM beam exhibits fluctuations in the position of the phase discontinuity and thus dynamic rotation of the beam.

Hybrid Metasurfaces for Simultaneous Focusing and Filtering

This work presents the design and fabrication of simple, polymeric, structure-based optical filters that simultaneously focus light. These filters represent a novel design at the boundary between diffractive optics and metasurfaces that may provide significant advantages for both digital and hyperspectral imaging. The fabrication process for the proposed filters resembles 3D printing, and is based on direct laser writing of a polymeric material using two-photon lithography. In addition, printed structures could be used to create molds for nanoimprint replication and mass production. Filters for visible and near-infrared wavelengths were designed using finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations.

Spontaneous Magnetic Superdomain Wall Fluctuations in an Artificial Antiferromagnet

Collective dynamics often play an important role in determining the stability of ground states for both naturally occurring materials and metamaterials. We studied the temperature dependent dynamics of antiferromagnetically ordered superdomains in a square artificial spin lattice using soft x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. We observed an exponential slowing down of superdomain wall motion below the AF onset temperature, similar to the behavior of typical bulk antiferromagnets. Using a continuous time random walk model we show that these superdomain walls undergo low-temperature ballistic and high-temperature diffusive motions.

Direct Imaging of Complex Spin Ice Behavior and Ordered Sublattices in Artificial Ferromagnetic Quasicrystals

We have imaged magnetization textures of permalloy films patterned into Penrose P2 tilings (P2T) using scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA). P2T film segments have near-uniform, bipolar magnetization, similar to artificial spin ices, but with asymmetric vertex coordination that induces a more complex spin ice behavior mediated by exchange interactions in vertex domain walls. Numerical simulations including long-range dipole interactions agree with SEMPA images of as-grown P2T, and predict a ferromagnetic ground state for a 2D P2T lattice of classical Ising spins.
