Second-Maximal Subalgebras of Leibniz Algebras

In this work we study Leibniz algebras whose second-maximal subalgebras are ideals. We provide a classification based on solvability, nilpotency, and the size of the derived algebra. We give specific descriptions of those Leibniz algebras whose derived algebra has codimension zero or one. This includes several algebras which are only possible over certain fields.

Minimal nonnilpotent Leibniz algebras

We classify all nonnilpotent, solvable Leibniz algebras with the property that all proper subalgebras are nilpotent. This generalizes the work of Stitzinger and Towers in Lie algebras. We show several examples which illustrate the differences between the Lie and Leibniz results.

Solvable Leibniz Algebras with Heisenberg Nilradical

All solvable Lie algebras with Heisenberg nilradical have already been classified. We extend this result to a classification of solvable Leibniz algebras with Heisenberg nilradical. As an example, we show the complete classification of all real or complex Leibniz algebras whose nilradical is the 3-dimensional Heisenberg algebra.

Solvable Leibniz algebras with triangular nilradical

A classification exists for Lie algebras whose nilradical is the triangular Lie algebra $T(n)$. We extend this result to a classification of all solvable Leibniz algebras with nilradical $T(n)$. As an example we show the complete classification of all Leibniz algebras whose nilradical is $T(4)$.

Nilpotent Lie and Leibniz algebras

We extend results on finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras to Leibniz algebras and counterexamples to others are found. One generator algebras are used in these examples and are investigated further.

Codes and shifted codes

The action of the Bernstein operators on Schur functions was given in terms of codes in [CG] and extended to the analog in Schur Q-functions in [HJS]. We define a new combinatorial model of extended codes and show that both of these results follow from a natural combinatorial relation induced on codes. The new algebraic structure provides a natural setting for Schur functions indexed by compositions.

A Frattini Theory for Leibniz Algebras

A Frattini theory for non-associative algebras was developed by Towers and results for particular classes of algebras have appeared in various articles. Especially plentiful are results on Lie algebras. It is the purpose of this paper to extend some of the Lie algebra results to Leibniz algebras.

Codes and shifted codes of partitions

In a recent paper, Carrell and Goulden found a combinatorial identity of the Bernstein operators that they then used to prove Bernstein's Theorem. We show that this identity is a straightforward consequence of the classical result. We also show how a similar approach using the codes of partitions can be generalized from Schur functions to also include Schur $Q$-functions and derive the combinatorial formulation for both cases. We then apply them by examining the Littlewood-Richardson and Pieri Rules.
