Six-$α$ cluster Bose-Einstein condensation and supersolid $^{12}$C($0_2^+)$+$^{12}$C($0_2^+)$ molecular structure in $^{24}$Mg

We show for the first time that the low-spin ($J \le 4^+$) six-$α$ condensate candidate states in $^{24}$Mg, recently reported by Fujikawa et al. [Phys. Lett. B 848, 138384 (2024)], are well described by the superfluid $α$-cluster model (SCM). This is achieved by a rigorous treatment of the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) zero mode as the order parameter of condensation in the finite six-$α$ system. We find that a roton rotational band with a large moment of inertia is built on the first excited NG $0^+$ state, analogous to the roton bands observed in three-, four-, and five-$α$ condensates in $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$Ne, respectively. Remarkably, our calculated roton band reproduces the well-known molecular resonance with a $^{12}$C($0_2^+$)+$^{12}$C($0_2^+$) structure ($16^+$) observed at $E_{\rm c.m.} = 32.5$ MeV in inelastic $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C scattering. This result provides a unified description of both the low-spin six-$α$ condensate states and the high-spin $^{12}$C($0_2^+$)+$^{12}$C($0_2^+$) molecular resonance. Analysis of the wave functions reveals a large overlap between the SCM states and a geometrical $^{12}$C($0_2^+$)+$^{12}$C($0_2^+$) configuration. This dual nature -the coexistence of superfluidity and crystallinity- identifies these states as a signature of a supersolid.

General Construction of Bra-Ket Formalism for Identical Particle Systems in Rigged Hilbert Space Approach

This study discussed Dirac's bra-ket formalism for the identical particles system based on the rigged Hilbert space reformulated by R. Madrid [J. Phys A:Math. Gen. 37, 8129 (2004)]. The bra and ket vectors for a composite system that form the basis of an identical particle system are described in dual and anti-dual spaces for the tensor product of rigged Hilbert spaces. The permutation operator that characterizes the symmetry of identical particles is constructed as the operator on such dual spaces. We also show that the nuclear spectral theorem in the tensor product of rigged Hilbert spaces endows the spectral expansion of the self-adjoint operator in the dual and anti-dual spaces and the expansion is consistent with the identicle particle system when the permutation operator commutes the self-adjoint operator.

Bose-Einstein condensation of five $α$ clusters in $^{20}$Ne and supersolidity

We show that the five $α$ cluster states recently observed in $^{20}$Ne, slightly above the five $α$ threshold energy, are Bose-Einstein condensates of five $α$ clusters. The states are described well using a superfluid cluster model, where the order parameter is defined. We suggest that the the five $α$ states are fragmented. Theory predicts the emergence of a five $α$ rotational roton band characterized by a large moment of inertia. This band is formed through roton excitations of the five $α$ BEC vacuum and possesses dual properties of superfluidity and crystallinity, a property of supersolidity. The persistent existence of such a roton bandis discussed and confirmed for the four $α$ condensate above the four $α$ threshold in $^{16}$O and the three $α$ condensate above the three $α$ threshold in $^{12}$C.

Assessing the ultracentral flow puzzle in hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions

An outstanding problem in heavy-ion collisions is the inability for models to accurately describe ultra-central experimental flow data, despite that being precisely the regime where a hydrodynamic description should be most applicable. We reassess the status of this puzzle by computing the flow in ultra-central collisions obtained from multiple recent Bayesian models that were tuned to various observables in different collision systems at typical centralities. While central data can now be described with better accuracy than in previous calculations, tension with experimental observation remains and worsens as one goes to ultra-central collisions. Tuning the model parameters cannot remove this tension without destroying the fit at other centralities. As such, new elements are likely needed in the standard modeling of heavy-ion collisions.

Polarimetric signature of the oceans as detected by near-infrared Earthshine observations

Context. The discovery of an extrasolar planet with an ocean has crucial importance in the search for life beyond Earth. The polarimetric detection of specularly reflected light from a smooth liquid surface is anticipated theoretically, though the polarimetric signature of Earth's oceans has not yet been conclusively detected in disk-integrated planetary light. Aims. We aim to detect and measure the polarimetric signature of the Earth's oceans. Methods. We conducted near-infrared polarimetry for lunar Earthshine and collected data on 32 nights with a variety of ocean fractions in the Earthshine-contributing region. Results. A clear positive correlation was revealed between the polarization degree and ocean fraction. We found hourly variations in polarization in accordance with rotational transition of the ocean fraction. The ratios of the variation to the typical polarization degree were as large as ~0.2-1.4. Conclusions. Our observations provide plausible evidence of the polarimetric signature attributed to Earth's oceans. Near-infrared polarimetry may be considered a prospective technique in the search for exoplanetary oceans.

Solutions with snaking singularities for the fast diffusion equation

We construct solutions of the fast diffusion equation, which exist for all $t\in\mathbb{R}$ and are singular on the set $Γ(t):= \{ ξ(s) ; -\infty 0$, where $ξ\in C^3(\mathbb{R};\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n\geq 2$. We also give a precise description of the behavior of the solutions near $Γ(t)$.

Supersolidity of the $α$ cluster structure in the nucleus $^{12}$C

For more than half a century, the structure of $^{12}$C, such as the ground band, has been understood to be well described by the three $α$ cluster model based on a geometrical crystalline picture. On the contrary, recently it has been claimed that the ground state of $^{12}$C is also well described by a nonlocalized cluster model without any of the geometrical configurations originally proposed to explain the dilute gas-like Hoyle state, which is now considered to be a Bose-Einstein condensate of $α$ clusters. The challenging unsolved problem is how we can reconcile the two exclusive $α$ cluster pictures of $^{12}$C, crystalline vs nonlocalized structure. We show that the crystalline cluster picture and the nonlocalized cluster picture can be reconciled by noticing that they are a manifestation of supersolidity with properties of both crystallinity and superfluidity. This is achieved through a superfluid $α$ cluster model based on effective field theory, which treats the Nambu-Goldstone zero mode rigorously. For several decades, scientists have been searching for a supersolid in nature.Nuclear $α$ cluster structure is considered to be the first confirmed example of a stable supersolid.

Large Polarization Degree of Comet 2P/Encke Continuum Based on Spectropolarimetric Signals During Its 2017 Apparition

Spectropolarimetry is a powerful technique for investigating the physical properties of gas and solid materials in cometary comae without mutual contamination, but there have been few spectropolarimetric studies to extract each component. We attempt to derive the continuum polarization degree of comet 2P/Encke, free from influence of molecular emissions. The target is unique in that it has an orbit dynamically decoupled from Jupiter like main-belt asteroids, while ejecting gas and dust like ordinary comets. We observed the comet using the Higashi-Hiroshima Optical and Near-Infrared Camera attached to the Cassegrain focus of the 150-cm Kanata telescope on UT 2017 February 21 when the comet was at the solar phase angle of 75.7 deg. We find that the continuum polarization degree with respect to the scattering plane is 33.8+/-2.7 % at the effective wavelength of 0.815 um, which is significantly higher than those of cometary dust in a high-Pmax group at similar phase angles. Assuming that an ensemble polarimetric response of 2P/Encke's dust as a function of phase angle is morphologically similar with those of other comets, its maximum polarization degree is estimated to > 40 % at the phase angle of ~100 deg. In addition, we obtain the polarization degrees of the C2 swan bands (0.51-0.56 um), the NH2 alpha bands (0.62-0.69 um) and the CN-red system (0.78-0.94 um) in a range of 3-19 %, which depend on the molecular species and rotational quantum numbers of each branch. The polarization vector aligns nearly perpendicularly to the scattering plane with the average of 0.4 deg over a wavelength range of 0.50-0.97 um. From the observational evidence, we conjecture that the large polarization degree of 2P/Encke would be attributable to a dominance of large dust particles around the nucleus, which have remained after frequent perihelion passages near the Sun.

Bose-Einstein condensation of alpha clusters and new soft mode in 12C--52Fe 4N nuclei in field theoretical superfluid cluster model

Bose-Einstein condensation of alpha clusters in light and medium-heavy nuclei is studied in the frame of the field theoretical superfluid cluster model. The order parameter of the phase transition from the Wigner phase to the Nambu-Goldstone phase is a superfluid amplitude, square of the moduli of which is the superfluid density distribution. The zero mode operators due to the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the global phase in the finite number of alpha clusters are rigorously treated. The theory is systematically applied to N alpha nuclei from12C-52Fe at various condensation rates. In 12C it is found that the energy levels of the gas-like well-developed alpha cluster states above the Hoyle state are reproduced well in agreement with experiment for realistic condensation rates of alpha clusters. The electric E2 and E0 transitions are calculated and found to be sensitive to the condensation rates. The profound raison d'etre of the alpha cluster gas-like states above the Hoyle state, whose structure has been interpreted geometrically in the nuclear models without the order parameter such as the cluster models or ab initio calculations, is revealed. It is found that in addition to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes vibrational mode states collective states of the zero mode operators appear systematically at low excitation energies from the N alpha threshold energy. These collective states, new-type soft modes in nuclei due to the Bose-Einstein condensation of the alpha clusters, emerge systematically in light and medium-heavy mass regions and are also located at high excitation energies from the ground state in contrast to the traditional concept of soft mode in the low excitation energy region.

Color reconnection effects on resonance production

We present studies that show how multi-parton interaction and color reconnection affect the hadro-chemistry in proton-proton (pp) collisions with special focus on the production of resonances using the PYTHIA8 event generator. We find that color reconnection suppresses the relative production of meson resonances such as $ρ_{0}$ and K*, providing an alternative explanation for the K*/K decrease observed in proton-proton collisions as a function of multiplicity by the ALICE collaboration. Detailed studies of the underlying mechanism causing meson resonance suppression indicate that color reconnection leads to shorter, less energetic strings whose fragmentation is less likely to produce more massive hadrons for a given quark content, therefore reducing ratios such as K*/K and $ρ_0/π$ in high-multiplicity pp collisions. In addition, we have also studied the effects of allowing string junctions to form and found that these may also contribute to resonance suppression.

Effective field theory of Bose-Einstein condensation of $α$ clusters and Nambu-Goldstone-Higgs states in $^{12}$C

An effective field theory of $α$ cluster condensation is formulated as a spontaneously broken symmetry in quantum field theory to understand the raison d'etre and nature of the Hoyle and $α$ cluster states in $^{12}$C. The Nambu--Goldstone and Higgs mode operators in infinite systems are replaced with a pair of canonical operators whose Hamiltonian gives rise to discrete energy states in addition to the Bogoliubov--de Gennes excited states. The calculations reproduce well the experimental spectrum of the $α$ cluster states. The existence of the Nambu--Goldstone--Higgs states is demonstrated and crucial. The $γ$ decay transitions are also obtained.

No Evidence of Intrinsic Optical/Near-Infrared Linear Polarization for V404 Cygni During its Bright Outburst in 2015: Broadband Modeling and Constraint on Jet Parameters

We present simultaneous optical and near-infrared (NIR) polarimetric results for the black hole binary V404 Cygni spanning the duration of its 7-day long optically-brightest phase of its 2015 June outburst. The simultaneous R and Ks-band light curves showed almost the same temporal variation except for the isolated (~30 min duration) orphan Ks-band flare observed at MJD 57193.54. We did not find any significant temporal variation of polarization degree (PD) and position angle (PA) in both R and Ks bands throughout our observations, including the duration of the orphan NIR flare. We show that the observed PD and PA are predominantly interstellar in origin by comparing the V404 Cyg polarimetric results with those of the surrounding sources within the 7'x7' field-of-view. The low intrinsic PD (less than a few percent) implies that the optical and NIR emissions are dominated by either disk or optically-thick synchrotron emission, or both. We also present the broadband spectra of V404 Cyg during the orphan NIR flare and a relatively faint and steady state by including quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and INTEGRAL fluxes. By adopting a single-zone synchrotron plus inverse-Compton model as widely used in modeling of blazars, we constrained the parameters of a putative jet. Because the jet synchrotron component cannot exceed the Swift/XRT disk/corona flux, the cutoff Lorentz factor in the electron energy distribution is constrained to be <10^2, suggesting particle acceleration is less efficient in this microquasar jet outburst compared to AGN jets. We also suggest that the loading of the baryon component inside the jet is inevitable based on energetic arguments.

Interacting multiple zero mode formulation and its application to a system consisting of a dark soliton in a condensate

To formulate the zero modes in a finite-size system with spontaneous breakdown of symmetries in quantum field theory is not trivial, for in the naive Bogoliubov theory, one encounters difficulties such as phase diffusion, the absence of a definite criterion for determining the ground state, and infrared divergences. A new interacting zero mode formulation that has been proposed for systems with a single zero mode to avoid these difficulties is extended to general systems with multiple zero modes. It naturally and definitely gives the interactions among the quantized zero modes, the consequences of which can be observed experimentally. In this paper, as a typical example, we consider an atomic Bose-Einstein condensed system with a dark soliton that contains two zero modes corresponding to spontaneous breakdown of the U(1) gauge and translational symmetries. Then we evaluate the standard deviations of the zero mode operators and see how the mutual interaction between the two zero modes affects them.

Dynamical Instability Induced by Zero Mode Under Symmetry Breaking External Perturbation

A complex eigenvalue in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a stationary Bose-Einstein condensate in ultracold atomic system indicates the dynamical instability of the system. We also have the modes with zero eigenvalues for the condensate, called the zero modes, which originate from the spontaneous breakdown of symmetries. Although the zero modes are suppressed in many theoretical analyses, we take account of them in this paper and argue that a zero mode can change into one with a pure imaginary eigenvalue by applying a symmetry breaking external perturbation potential. This emergence of a pure imaginary mode adds a new type of scenario of dynamical instability to that characterized by complex eigenvalue of the usual excitation modes. For illustration, we deal with two one-dimensional homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate systems with a single dark soliton under a respective perturbation potential, breaking the invariance under translation, to derive pure imaginary modes.

A Very High Momentum Particle Identification Detector

The construction of a new detector is proposed to extend the capabilities of ALICE in the high transverse momentum (pT) region. This Very High Momentum Particle Identification Detector (VHMPID) performs charged hadron identification on a track-by-track basis in the 5 GeV/c < p < 25 GeV/c momentum range and provides ALICE with new opportunities to study parton-medium interactions at LHC energies. The VHMPID covers up to 30% of the ALICE central barrel and presents sufficient acceptance for triggered- and tagged-jet studies, allowing for the first time identified charged hadron measurements in jets. This Letter of Intent summarizes the physics motivations for such a detector as well as its layout and integration into ALICE.

Optical observations of NEA 162173 (1999 JU3) during the 2011-2012 apparition

Near-Earth asteroid 162173 (1999 JU3) is a potential target of two asteroid sample return missions, not only because of its accessibility but also because of the first C-type asteroid for exploration missions. The lightcurve-related physical properties of this object were investigated during the 2011-2012 apparition. We aim to confirm the physical parameters useful for JAXA's Hayabusa 2 mission, such as rotational period, absolute magnitude, and phase function. Our data complement previous studies that did not cover low phase angles. With optical imagers and 1-2 m class telescopes, we acquired the photometric data at different phase angles. We independently derived the rotational lightcurve and the phase curve of the asteroid. We have analyzed the lightcurve of 162173 (1999 JU3), and derived a synodic rotational period of 7.625 +/- 0.003 h, the axis ratio a/b = 1.12. The absolute magnitude H_R = 18.69 +/- 0.07 mag and the phase slope of G = -0.09 +/- 0.03 were also obtained based on the observations made during the 2011-2012 apparition.

Coarse graining scale and effectiveness of hydrodynamic modeling

Some basic questions about the hydrodynamical approach to relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed aiming to clarify how far we can go with such an approach to extract useful information on the properties and dynamics of the QCD matter created. We emphasize the importance of the coarse-graining scale required for the hydrodynamic modeling which determines the space-time resolution and the associated limitations of collective flow observables. We show that certain kinds of observables can indicate the degree of inhomogeneity of the initial condition under less stringent condition than the local thermal equilibrium subjected to the coarse-graining scale compatible to the scenario.

Heavy Ion Collisions at the dawn of the LHC era

This is a proceeding of the CERN Latin American School of High-Energy physics that took place in the beautiful city of Natal, northern Brazil, in March 2011. In this paper I present a review of the main topics associated with the study of Heavy Ion Collisions, intended for students starting or interested in the field. It is impossible to summarize in a few pages the large amount of information that is available today, after a decade of operations of the RHIC accelerator and the beginning of the LHC operations. Thus, I had to choose some of the results and theories in order to present the main ideas and goals. All results presented here are from publicly available references, but some of the discussions and opinions are my personal view, where I have made that clear in the text.
