Electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance in the full MINOS data sample

We report on $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ appearance in $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ beams using the full MINOS data sample. The comparison of these $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ appearance data at a 735 km baseline with $θ_{13}$ measurements by reactor experiments probes $δ$, the $θ_{23}$ octant degeneracy, and the mass hierarchy. This analysis is the first use of this technique and includes the first accelerator long-baseline search for $\barν_μ\rightarrow\barν_e$. Our data disfavor 31% (5%) of the three-parameter space defined by $δ$, the octant of the $θ_{23}$, and the mass hierarchy at the 68% (90%) C.L. We measure a value of 2sin$^2(2θ_{13})$sin$^2(θ_{23})$ that is consistent with reactor experiments.

A search for flavor-changing non-standard neutrino interactions by MINOS

We report new constraints on flavor-changing non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) using data from the MINOS experiment. We analyzed a combined set of beam neutrino and antineutrino data, and found no evidence for deviations from standard neutrino mixing. The observed energy spectra constrain the NSI parameter to the range $-0.20 < \varepsilon_{μτ} < 0.07\;\text{(90% C.L.)}$

Further evidence for large central mass-to-light ratios in massive early-type galaxies

We studied the stellar populations, distribution of dark matter, and dynamical structure of a sample of 25 early-type galaxies in the Coma and Abell 262 clusters. We derived dynamical mass-to-light ratios and dark matter densities from orbit-based dynamical models, complemented by the ages, metallicities, and α-elements abundances of the galaxies from single stellar population models. Most of the galaxies have a significant detection of dark matter and their halos are about 10 times denser than in spirals of the same stellar mass. Calibrating dark matter densities to cosmological simulations we find assembly redshifts z_{DM} \approx 1-3. The dynamical mass that follows the light is larger than expected for a Kroupa stellar initial mass function, especially in galaxies with high velocity dispersion σ_{eff} inside the effective radius r_{eff}. We now have 5 of 25 galaxies where mass follows light to 1-3 r_{eff}, the dynamical mass-to-light ratio of all the mass that follows the light is large (\approx 8-10 in the Kron-Cousins R band), the dark matter fraction is negligible to 1-3 r_{eff}. This could indicate a "massive" initial mass function in massive early-type galaxies. Alternatively, some of the dark matter in massive galaxies could follow the light very closely suggesting a significant degeneracy between luminous and dark matter.

Molecular gas in the centre of nearby galaxies from VLT/SINFONI integral field spectroscopy - I. Morphology and mass inventory

We present the first results of an analysis of the properties of the molecular gas in the nuclear regions (r < 300 pc) of a sample of six nearby galaxies, based on new high spatial resolution observations obtained in the K-band with the near-infrared integral field spectrograph SINFONI at the Very Large Telescope. We derive two-dimensional distributions of the warm molecular and ionized gas from the H2, Br_gamma and HeI emission lines present in the spectra of the galaxies. We find a range of morphologies, including bar- and ring-like distributions and either centrally peaked or off-centre emission. The morphologies of the molecular and the ionized gas are not necessarily coincident. The observed emission-line ratios point towards thermal processes as the principal mechanism responsible for the H2 excitation in the nuclear and circumnuclear regions of the galaxies, independently of the presence of an active nucleus. We find that a rescaling of the H2 2.12 microns emission-line luminosity by a factor beta~1200 gives a good estimate (within a factor of 2) of the total (cold) molecular gas mass. The galaxies of the sample contain large quantities of molecular gas in their centres, with total masses in the ~ 105 - 108 Msol range. Never the less, these masses correspond to less than 3 per cent of the stellar masses derived for the galaxies in these regions, indicating that the presence of gas should not affect black hole mass estimates based on the dynamical modelling of the stars. The high-spatial resolution provided by the SINFONI data allowed us to resolve a circumnuclear ring (with a radius of ~270 pc) in the galaxy NGC 4536. The measured values of the Br_gamma equivalent width and the HeI/Br_gamma emission-line ratio suggests that bursts of star formation occurred throughout this ring as recently as 6.5 Myr ago.

Measurements of atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos in the MINOS Far Detector

This paper reports measurements of atmospheric neutrino and antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Far Detector, based on 2553 live-days (37.9 kton-years) of data. A total of 2072 candidate events are observed. These are separated into 905 contained-vertex muons and 466 neutrino-induced rock-muons, both produced by charged-current $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ interactions, and 701 contained-vertex showers, composed mainly of charged-current $ν_{e}$ and $\barν_{e}$ interactions and neutral-current interactions. The curvature of muon tracks in the magnetic field of the MINOS Far Detector is used to select separate samples of $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ events. The observed ratio of $\barν_μ$ to $ν_μ$ events is compared with the Monte Carlo simulation, giving a double ratio of $R^{data}_{\barν/ν}/R^{MC}_{\barν/ν} = 1.03 \pm 0.08 (stat.) \pm 0.08 (syst.)$. The $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ data are separated into bins of $L/E$ resolution, based on the reconstructed energy and direction of each event, and a maximum likelihood fit to the observed $L/E$ distributions is used to determine the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters. This fit returns 90% confidence limits of $|Δm^{2}| = (1.9 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-3} eV^{2}$ and $sin^{2} 2θ> 0.86$. The fit is extended to incorporate separate $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ oscillation parameters, returning 90% confidence limits of $|Δm^{2}|-|Δ\bar{m}^{2}| = 0.6^{+2.4}_{-0.8} \times 10^{-3} eV^{2}$ on the difference between the squared-mass splittings for neutrinos and antineutrinos.

Further evidence for large central mass-to-light ratios in early-type galaxies: the case of ellipticals and lenticulars in the Abell~262 cluster

We present radially resolved spectroscopy of 8 early-type galaxies in Abell~262, measuring rotation, velocity dispersion, $H_3$ and $H_4$ coefficients along three axes, and line-strength index profiles of Mg, Fe and H$β$. Ionized-gas velocity and velocity dispersion is included for 6 galaxies. We derive dynamical mass-to-light ratios and dark matter densities from orbit-based dynamical models, complemented by the galaxies' ages, metallicities, and $α$-elements abundances. Four galaxies have significant dark matter with halos about 10 times denser than in spirals of the same stellar mass. Using dark matter densities and cosmological simulations, assembly redshifts $\zdm\approx 1-3$, which we found earlier for Coma. The dynamical mass following the light is larger than expected for a Kroupa stellar IMF, especially in galaxies with high velocity dispersion $\sigeff$ inside the effective radius $\reff$. This could indicate a `massive' IMF in massive galaxies. Alternatively, some dark matter in massive galaxies could follow the light closely. Combining with our comparison sample of Coma early-types, we now have 5 of 24 galaxies where (1) mass follows light to $1-3\,\reff$, (2) the dynamical mass-to-light ratio {of all the mass that follows the light is large ($\approx\,8-10$ in the Kron-Cousins $R$ band), (3) the dark matter fraction is negligible to $1-3\,\reff$. Unless the IMF in these galaxies is particularly `massive' and somehow coupled to the dark matter content, there seems a significant degeneracy between luminous and dark matter in some early-type galaxies. The role of violent relaxation is briefly discussed.

An improved measurement of muon antineutrino disappearance in MINOS

We report an improved measurement of muon anti-neutrino disappearance over a distance of 735km using the MINOS detectors and the Fermilab Main Injector neutrino beam in a muon anti-neutrino enhanced configuration. From a total exposure of 2.95e20 protons on target, of which 42% have not been previously analyzed, we make the most precise measurement of the anti-neutrino "atmospheric" delta-m squared = 2.62 +0.31/-0.28 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) and constrain the anti-neutrino atmospheric mixing angle >0.75 (90%CL). These values are in agreement with those measured for muon neutrinos, removing the tension reported previously.

Search for Lorentz invariance and CPT violation with muon antineutrinos in the MINOS Near Detector

We have searched for sidereal variations in the rate of antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Near Detector. Using antineutrinos produced by the NuMI beam, we find no statistically significant sidereal modulation in the rate. When this result is placed in the context of the Standard Model Extension theory we are able to place upper limits on the coefficients defining the theory. These limits are used in combination with the results from an earlier analysis of MINOS neutrino data to further constrain the coefficients.

Dynamical masses of early-type galaxies: a comparison to lensing results and implications for the stellar IMF and the distribution of dark matter

This work aims to study the distribution of luminous and dark matter in Coma early-type galaxies. Dynamical masses obtained under the assumption that mass follows light do not match with the masses of strong gravitational lens systems of similar velocity dispersions. Instead, dynamical fits with dark matter halos are in good agreement with lensing results. We derive mass-to-light ratios of the stellar populations from Lick absorption line indices, reproducing well the observed galaxy colours. Even in dynamical models with dark matter halos the amount of mass that follows the light increases more rapidly with galaxy velocity dispersion than expected for a constant stellar initial mass function (IMF). While galaxies around sigma ~ 200 km/s are consistent with a Kroupa IMF, the same IMF underpredicts luminous dynamical masses of galaxies with sigma ~ 300 km/s by a factor of two and more. A systematic variation of the stellar IMF with galaxy velocity dispersion could explain this trend with a Salpeter IMF for the most massive galaxies. If the IMF is instead constant, then some of the dark matter in high velocity dispersion galaxies must follow a spatial distribution very similar to that of the light. A combination of both, a varying IMF and a component of dark matter that follows the light is possible as well. For a subsample of galaxies with old stellar populations we show that the tilt in the fundamental plane can be explained by systematic variations of the total (stellar + dark) mass inside the effective radius. We tested commonly used mass estimator formulae, finding them accurate at the 20-30% level.

Comparisons of the MINOS Near and Far Detector Readout Systems at a Test Beam

MINOS is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment that uses two detectors separated by 734 km. The readout systems used for the two detectors are different and have to be independently calibrated. To verify and make a direct comparison of the calibrated response of the two readout systems, test beam data were acquired using a smaller calibration detector. This detector was simultaneously instrumented with both readout systems and exposed to the CERN PS T7 test beam. Differences in the calibrated response of the two systems are shown to arise from differences in response non-linearity, photomultiplier crosstalk, and threshold effects at the few percent level. These differences are reproduced by the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to better than 1% and a scheme that corrects for these differences by calibrating the MC to match the data in each detector separately is presented. The overall difference in calorimetric response between the two readout systems is shown to be consistent with zero to a precision of 1.3% in data and 0.3% in MC with no significant energy dependence.

Measurement of the Double Beta Decay Half-life of 130Te with the NEMO-3 Detector

This Letter reports results from the NEMO-3 experiment based on an exposure of 1275 days with 661g of 130Te in the form of enriched and natural tellurium foils. The double beta decay rate of 130Te is found to be greater than zero with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations and the half-life is measured to be T1/2 = (7.0 +/- 0.9(stat) +/- 1.1(syst)) x 10^{20} yr. This represents the most precise measurement of this half-life yet published and the first real-time observation of this decay.

Planetary nebulae in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M 60): kinematics and distance redetermination

Using a slitless spectroscopy method with (a) the 8.2 m Subaru telescope and its FOCAS Cassegrain spectrograph, and (b) the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) unit 1 (Antu) and its FORS2 Cassegrain spectrograph, we have detected 326 planetary nebulae (PNs) in the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M 60), and we have measured their radial velocities. After rejecting some PNs more likely to belong to the companion galaxy NGC 4647, we have built a catalog with kinematic information for 298 PNs in M 60. Using these radial velocities we have concluded that they support the presence of a dark matter halo around M 60. Based on an isotropic, two-component Hernquist model, we estimate the dark matter halo mass within 3$R_{\rm e}$ to be 4$\times10^{11} M_{\odot}$, which is almost one half of the total mass of about $10^{12} M_{\odot}$ within 3$R_{\rm e}$. This total mass is similar to that estimated from globular cluster, XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. The dark matter becomes dominant outside. More detailed dynamical modeling of the PN data is being published in a companion paper. We have also measured the $m$(5007) magnitudes of many of these PNs, and built a statistically complete sample of 218 PNs. The resulting PN luminosity function (PNLF) was used to estimate a distance modulus of 30.7$\pm$0.2 mag, equivalent to 14$\pm$1 Mpc. This confirms an earlier PNLF distance measurement, based on a much smaller sample. The PNLF distance modulus remains smaller than the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distance modulus by 0.4 mag.

Probing New Physics Models of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with SuperNEMO

The possibility to probe new physics scenarios of light Majorana neutrino exchange and right-handed currents at the planned next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment SuperNEMO is discussed. Its ability to study different isotopes and track the outgoing electrons provides the means to discriminate different underlying mechanisms for the neutrinoless double beta decay by measuring the decay half-life and the electron angular and energy distributions.

Spectral modeling of scintillator for the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO detectors

We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of $\rm ^{207}Bi$ and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. In this article, we briefly describe our modeling approach and results of our studies.

Measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay half-life of Zr-96 with the NEMO-3 detector

Using 9.4 g of Zr-96 and 1221 days of data from the NEMO-3 detector corresponding to 0.031 kg yr, the obtained 2vbb decay half-life measurement is [2.35 +/- 0.14(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)] x 10^19 yr. Different characteristics of the final state electrons have been studied, such as the energy sum, individual electron energy, and angular distribution. The 2v nuclear matrix element is extracted using the measured 2vbb half-life and is 0.049 +/- 0.002. Constraints on 0vbb decay have also been set.

Interface driven magnetoelectric effects in granular CrO2

Antiferromagnetic and magnetoelectric Cr2O3-surfaces strongly affect the electronic properties in half metallic CrO2. We show the presence of a Cr2O3 surface layer on CrO3 grains by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The effect of these surface layers is demonstrated by measurements of the temperature variation of the magnetoelectric susceptibility. A major observation is a sign change at about 100 K followed by a monotonic rise as a function of temperature. These electric field induced moments in CrO3 are correlated with the magnetoelectric susceptibility of pure Cr2O3. This study indicates that it is important to take into account the magnetoelectric character of thin surface layers of Cr2O3 in granular CrO2 for better understanding the transport mechanism in this system. The observation of a finite magnetoelectric susceptibility near room temperature may find utility in device applications.

Results of the BiPo-1 prototype for radiopurity measurements for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils

The development of BiPo detectors is dedicated to the measurement of extremely high radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl and $^{214}$Bi for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils. A modular prototype, called BiPo-1, with 0.8 $m^2$ of sensitive surface area, has been running in the Modane Underground Laboratory since February, 2008. The goal of BiPo-1 is to measure the different components of the background and in particular the surface radiopurity of the plastic scintillators that make up the detector. The first phase of data collection has been dedicated to the measurement of the radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl. After more than one year of background measurement, a surface activity of the scintillators of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $=$ 1.5 $μ$Bq/m$^2$ is reported here. Given this level of background, a larger BiPo detector having 12 m$^2$ of active surface area, is able to qualify the radiopurity of the SuperNEMO selenium double beta decay foils with the required sensitivity of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $<$ 2 $μ$Bq/kg (90% C.L.) with a six month measurement.

Radially extended kinematics and stellar populations of the massive ellipticals NGC1600, NGC4125 and NGC7619. Constraints on the outer dark halo density profile

We present high quality long slit spectra along the major and minor axes out to 1.5-2 Re (14-22 kpc) of three bright elliptical galaxies (NGC1600, NGC4125, NGC7619) obtained at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). We derive stellar kinematic profiles and Lick/IDS indices (Hbeta, Mgb, Fe5015, Fe5270, Fe5335, Fe5406). Moreover, for NGC4125 we derive gas kinematics and emission line strengths. We model the absorption line strengths using Simple Stellar Populations models that take into account the variation of [α/Fe] and derive ages, total metallicity and element abundances. Overall, we find that the three galaxies have old and [α/Fe] overabundant stellar populations with no significant gradients. The metallicity is supersolar at the center with a strong negative radial gradient. For NGC4125, several pieces of evidence point to a recent dissipational merger event. We calculate the broad band color profiles with the help of SSP models. All of the colors show sharp peaks at the center of the galaxies, mainly caused by the metallicity gradients, and agree well with the measured colors. Using the Schwarzschild's axisymmetric orbit superposition technique, we model the stellar kinematics to constrain the dark halos of the galaxies. We use the tight correlation between the Mgb strength and local escape velocity to set limits on the extent of the halos by testing different halo sizes. Logarithmic halos - cut at 60 kpc -minimize the overall scatter of the Mgb-Vesc relation. Larger cutoff radii are found if the dark matter density profile is decreasing more steeply at large radii.
