High time resolution search for prompt radio emission from the long GRB 210419A with the Murchison Widefield Array

We present a low-frequency (170\textendash200\,MHz) search for prompt radio emission associated with the long GRB 210419A using the rapid-response mode of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), triggering observations with the Voltage Capture System (VCS) for the first time. The MWA began observing GRB 210419A within 89\,s of its detection by \textit{Swift}, enabling us to capture any dispersion delayed signal emitted by this GRB for a typical range of redshifts. We conducted a standard single pulse search with a temporal and spectral resolution of $100\,\upmu$s and 10\,kHz over a broad range of dispersion measures from 1 to $5000\,\text{pc}\,\text{cm}^{-3}$, but none were detected. However, fluence upper limits of $77\text{--}224$\,Jy\,ms derived over a pulse width of $0.5\text{--}10$\,ms and a redshift of $0.6<z<4$ are some of the most stringent at low radio frequencies. We compared these fluence limits to the GRB jet-interstellar medium (ISM) interaction model, placing constraints on the fraction of magnetic energy ($ε_{\text{B}}\lesssim[0.05 \text{--} 0.1]$). We also searched for signals during the X-ray flaring activity of GRB 210419A on minute timescales in the image domain and found no emission, resulting in an intensity upper limit of $0.57\,\text{Jy}\,\text{beam}^{-1}$, corresponding to a constraint of $ε_{\text{B}}\lesssim10^{-3}$. Our non-detection could imply that GRB 210419A was at a high redshift, there was not enough magnetic energy for low-frequency emission, or that the radio waves did not escape from the GRB environment.

Study of the $h γZ$ coupling at the ILC

We studied the $e^+e^- \to h γ$ process at the full simulation level, using a realistic detector model to study the feasibility to constrain the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) $h γZ$ coefficient, $ζ_{AZ}$, at the ILC. Assuming International Large Detector (ILD) operating at 250 GeV ILC, it is shown that the $e^+e^- \to hγ$ process is much more difficult to observe than naively expected if there is no BSM contribution. We thus put upper limits on the cross section of this process. The expected combined 95% C.L. upper limits for full polarisations $(P_{e^-}, P_{e^+})=(-100\%, +100\%)$ and $(+100\%, -100\%)$ are $\frac{σ_{h γ}^{L}}{σ_{S M}^{L}}<5.0$ and $\frac{σ_{h γ}^{R}}{σ_{S M}^{R}}<61.9$, respectively. The resultant 95% C.L. limit on $ζ_{AZ}$ is $-0.020<ζ_{A Z}<0.003$.

Early-time Searches for Coherent Radio Emission from Short GRBs with the Murchison Widefield Array

Here we present a low frequency (170-200MHz) search for coherent radio emission associated with nine short GRBs detected by the Swift and/or Fermi satellites using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) rapid-response observing mode. The MWA began observing these events within 30 to 60s of their high-energy detection, enabling us to capture any dispersion delayed signals emitted by short GRBs for a typical range of redshifts. We conducted transient searches at the GRB positions on timescales of 5s, 30s and 2min, resulting in the most constraining flux density limits on any associated transient of 0.42, 0.29, and 0.084Jy, respectively. We also searched for dispersed signals at a temporal and spectral resolution of 0.5s and 1.28MHz but none were detected. However, the fluence limit of 80-100Jy ms derived for GRB 190627A is the most stringent to date for a short GRB. We compared the fluence and persistent emission limits to short GRB coherent emission models, placing constraints on key parameters including the radio emission efficiency of the nearly merged neutron stars ($\lesssim10^{-4}$), the fraction of magnetic energy in the GRB jet ($\lesssim2\times10^{-4}$), and the radio emission efficiency of the magnetar remnant ($\lesssim10^{-3}$). Comparing the limits derived for our full GRB sample to the same emission models, we demonstrate that our 30-min flux density limits were sensitive enough to theoretically detect the persistent radio emission from magnetar remnants up to a redshift of $z\sim0.6$. Our non-detection of this emission could imply that some GRBs in the sample were not genuinely short or did not result from a binary neutron star merger, the GRBs were at high redshifts, these mergers formed atypical magnetars, the radiation beams of the magnetar remnants were pointing away from Earth, or the majority did not form magnetars but rather collapse directly into black holes.

Quasi-BIC laser enabled by high-contrast grating resonator for gas detection

In this work, we propose and numerically investigate a two-dimensional microlaser based on the concept of bound states in the continuum (BIC). The device consists of a thin gain layer (Rhodamine 6G dye-doped silica) sandwiched between two high-contrast-grating layers. The structure supports various BIC modes upon a proper choice of topological parameters; in particular it supports a high-Q quasi-BIC mode when partially breaking a bound state in the continuum at $Γ$ point. The optically-pumped gain medium provides sufficient optical gain to compensate the quasi-BIC mode losses, enabling lasing with ultra-low pump threshold (fluence of 17 $μ$J/cm$^2$) and very narrow optical linewidth in the visible range. This innovative device displays distinguished sensing performance for gas detection, and the emission wavelength sensitively shifts to the longer wavelength with the changing of environment refractive index (in order of $5 \times 10^{-4}$). The achieved bulk sensitivity is 221 nm/RIU with a high signal to noise ratio, and a record-high figure of merit reaches to 4420 RIU$^{-1}$. This ultracompact and low threshold quasi-BIC laser facilitated by the ultra-narrow resonance can serve as formidable candidate for on-chip gas sensor.

Study of the $h γZ$ coupling at the ILC

We studied the $e^+e^- \to h γ$ process at the International Linear Collider (ILC) at $\sqrt{s}=250$ GeV, based on the full detector simulation of the International Large Detector (ILD). This process is loop-induced in the Standard Model (SM) and is sensitive to new physics which alters $h γγ$ or $h γZ$ coupling. We performed the analysis by employing the leading signal channels with $h \to b \bar{b}$ and $h \to WW^*$ and including full SM background processes. The results are obtained for two scenarios of beam polarisations each with an integrated luminosity of 900 fb$^{-1}$. We found the expected significance of the SM signal is 0.40$σ$ for $P(e^-,e^+)=(-0.8,+0.3)$ (the left-handed polarisation), and 0.06$σ$ for $P(e^-,e^+)=(+0.8,-0.3)$ (the right-handed polarisation). The bounds on new physics effects are reported as the 95% C.L. upper limit for the cross-section of $e^+e^- \to h γ$: $σ_{hγ}^L <$ 1.8 fb and $σ_{hγ}^R <$ 0.5 fb respectively for left- and right-handed polarisations. The constraints on effective $hγZ$ couplings are to be further studied.

Murchison Widefield Array rapid-response observations of the short GRB 180805A

Here we present stringent low-frequency 185MHz limits on coherent radio emission associated with a short gamma-ray burst (SGRB). Our observations of the short GRB 180805A were taken with the upgraded Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) rapid-response system, which triggered within 20s of receiving the transient alert from Swift, corresponding to 83.7s post-burst. The SGRB was observed for 30m, resulting in a 3sigma persistent flux density upper-limit of 40.2mJy/beam. Transient searches were conducted at the Swift position of this GRB on 0.5s, 5s, 30s, and 2m timescales, resulting in 3sigma limits of 570-1830, 270-630, 200-420, and 100-200mJy/beam, respectively. We also performed a dedispersion search for prompt signals at the position of the SGRB with a temporal and spectral resolution of 0.5s and 1.28MHz, resulting in a 6sigma fluence upper-limit range from 570Jyms at DM=3000pc/cm^3 (z~2.5) to 1750Jyms at DM=200pc/cm^3 (z~0.1). We compare the fluence prompt emission limit and the persistent upper-limit to SGRB coherent emission models assuming the merger resulted in a stable magnetar. Our observations were not sensitive enough to detect prompt emission associated with the alignment of magnetic fields of a binary neutron star just prior to the merger, from the interaction between the relativistic jet and the interstellar medium or persistent pulsar-like emission from the spin-down of the magnetar. However, in the case of a more powerful SGRB (a gamma-ray fluence an order of magnitude higher than GRB 180805A and/or a brighter X-ray counterpart), our MWA observations may be sensitive enough to detect coherent radio emission from the jet-ISM interaction and/or the magnetar remnant. Finally, we demonstrate that of all current low-frequency radio telescopes, only the MWA has the sensitivity and response times capable of probing prompt emission models associated with the initial SGRB merger event.

Wafer-size VO2 film prepared by water-vapor oxidant

The growth of wafer-scale and uniform monoclinic VO2 film was a challenge if considering the multivalent vanadium atom and the various phase structures of VO2 compound. Directly oxidizing metallic vanadium film in oxygen gas seemed to be an easy way, while the oxidation parameters were extremely sensitive due to the critical preparation window. Here we proposed a facile thermal oxidation by water-vapor to produce wafer-scale VO2 films with high quality. Results indicated that by using the water-vapor oxidant, the temperature window for VO2 growth was greatly broadened. In addition, the obtained wafer-size VO2 film showed very uniform surface and sharp resistance change. The chemical reaction routes with water-vapor were calculated, which favored the VO2 film growth. Our results not only demonstrated that the water-vapor could be used as a modest oxidizing agent, but also showed the unique advantage for large size VO2 film preparation.

Higgs boson potential at colliders: status and perspectives

This document summarises the current theoretical and experimental status of the di-Higgs boson production searches, and of the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling, with the wish to serve as a useful guide for the next years. The document discusses the theoretical status, including state-of-the-art predictions for di-Higgs cross sections, developments on the effective field theory approach, and studies on specific new physics scenarios that can show up in the di-Higgs final state. The status of di-Higgs searches and the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs self-coupling at the LHC are presented, with an overview of the relevant experimental techniques, and covering all the variety of relevant signatures. Finally, the capabilities of future colliders in determining the Higgs self-coupling are addressed, comparing the projected precision that can be obtained in such facilities. The work has started as the proceedings of the Di-Higgs workshop at Colliders, held at Fermilab from the 4th to the 9th of September 2018, but it went beyond the topics discussed at that workshop and included further developments.

Measurement of the electron transmission rate of the gating foil for the TPC of the ILC experiment

We have developed a gating foil for the time projection chamber envisaged as a central tracker for the international linear collider experiment. It has a structure similar to the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) with a higher optical aperture ratio and functions as an ion gate without gas amplification. The transmission rate for electrons was measured in a counting mode for a wide range of the voltages applied across the foil using an $^{55}$Fe source and a laser in the absence of a magnetic field. The blocking power of the foil against positive ions was estimated from the electron transmissions.

ILC Higgs White Paper

The ILC Higgs White Paper is a review of Higgs Boson theory and experiment at the International Linear Collider (ILC). Theory topics include the Standard Model Higgs, the two-Higgs doublet model, alternative approaches to electroweak symmetry breaking, and precision goals for Higgs boson experiments. Experimental topics include the measurement of the Higgs cross section times branching ratio for various Higgs decay modes at ILC center of mass energies of 250, 500, and 1000 GeV, and the extraction of Higgs couplings and the total Higgs width from these measurements. Luminosity scenarios based on the ILC TDR machine design are used throughout. The gamma-gamma collider option at the ILC is also discussed.

On the solutions of Navier-Stokes equations for turbulent channel flows in a particular function class

In this paper, we continue the discussion as done in \cite{CTZ15} on turbulent channel flow described by the Navier-Stokes model and the Navier-Stokes-alpha model. We study the non-stationary solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes-$α$ model having particular function forms. In particular, the term of sum of pressure and potential can be shown to be harmonic in the space variable.

Top physics at high-energy lepton colliders

A summary is presented of the workshop "top physics at linear colliders" that was held at IFIC Valencia from the 30th of June to the 3rd July 2015. We present an up-to-date status report of studies into the potential for top quark physics of lepton colliders with an energy reach that exceeds the top quark pair production threshold, with a focus on the linear collider projects ILC and CLIC. This summary shows that such projects can offer very competitive determinations of top quark properties (mass, width) and its interactions with other Standard Model particles, in particular electroweak gauge bosons and the Higgs boson. In both areas the prospects exceed the LHC potential significantly - often by an order of magnitude.

Model independence of the measurement of the e+e- -> ZH cross section using Z->μ+μ- and Z->e+e- at the ILC

The model independent measurement of the absolute ZH cross section of the Higgsstrahlung process e+e- -> ZH is an unique measurement at the ILC indispensable for measuring the Higgs couplings and their deviations from the Standard Model in order to identify new physics models. The performance in measuring the ZH cross section using events in which the Higgs boson recoils against a Z boson which decays into a pair of muons or electrons has been demonstrated based on full simulation of the ILD detector for three center of mass energies 250, 350, and 500 GeV, and two beam polarizations (Pe-,Pe+) =(-80%, +30%) and (+80%, -30%). This paper demonstrates in detail that the analysis which achieved these results are model independent to the sub-percent level. Data selection methods are designed to optimize the precisions of the ZH cross section and at the same time minimize the bias on the measured due to discrepancy in signal efficiencies among Higgs decay modes. Under conservative assumptions which take into account unknown Higgs decay modes, the relative bias on the ZH cross section is shown to be smaller than 0.2% for all center-of-mass energies, which is five times below even the smallest ZH cross section statistical uncertainties expected from the leptonic recoil measurements in a full 20 years ILC physics program.

Sequential Tunneling vs. Electron Correlation in Multiple Photo-ionization

We take advantage of the information provided by use of elliptical polarization in a recent two-electron release time experiment [A.N. Pfeiffer et al., Nature Physics 7, 428 (2011)]. This allows a comparative test of the currently dominant conjectures regarding independent-electron tunneling theory vs. fully electron-correlated classical release theory to describe electron release in strong-field double ionization.

Breaking of the number-of-constituent-quark scaling for identified-particle elliptic flow as a signal of phase change in low-energy data taken at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)

We argue that measurements of identified-particle elliptic flow in a wide energy range could shed light on the possible phase change in high-energy heavy ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). When the hadronization process is dominated by quark coalescence, the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling for the identified-particle elliptic flow can serve as a probe for studying the strong interacting partonic matter. In the upcoming RHIC low-energy runs, the NCQ scaling behavior may be broken because of the change of the effective degrees of freedom of the hot dense matter, which corresponds to the transition from the dominant partonic phase to the dominant hadronic phase. A multiphase transport model is used to present the dependence of NCQ scaling behavior on the different hadronization mechanisms.

A Fully Parameterized Fem Model for Electromagnetic Optimization of an RF Mems Wafer Level Package

In this work, we present a fully parameterized capped transmission line model for electromagnetic optimization of a wafer level package (WLP) for RF MEMS applications using the Ansoft HFSS-TM electromagnetic simulator. All the degrees of freedom (DoF's) in the package fabrication can be modified within the model in order to optimize for losses and mismatch (capacitive and inductive couplings) introduced by the cap affecting the MEMS RF behaviour. Ansoft HFSS-TM was also validated for the simulation of capped RF MEMS devices by comparison against experimental data. A test run of capped 50 transmission lines and shorts was fabricated and tested.

Baryon-Strangeness correlations in Parton/Hadron transport model for Au + Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

Baryon-strangeness correlation (C$_{BS}$) has been investigated with a multi-phase transport model (AMPT) in $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The centrality dependence of C$_{BS}$ is presented within the model, from partonic phase to hadronic matter. We find that the system still reserve partial predicted signatures of C$_{BS}$ after parton coalescence. But after hadronic rescattering, the predicted signatures will be obliterated completely. So it seems that both coalescence hadronization process and hadronic rescattering are responsible for the disappearance of the C$_{BS}$ signatures.
