Measurement of the total neutron cross section on argon in the 20 to 70 keV energy range

The cross section for neutron interactions on argon is an important design and operational parameter for a number of neutrino, dark matter, and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments which use liquid argon as a detection or shielding medium. There is a discrepancy between the evaluated total cross section in the $20$ to $70~\rm$\,keV neutron kinetic energy region given in the ENDF database and a single measurement conducted by an experiment with a thin target (0.2 atoms/barn) optimized for higher cross sections. This gives rise to significant uncertainty in the interaction length of neutrons in liquid argon. This discrepancy is now resolved by new results presented here from the Argon Resonance Transport Interaction Experiment (ARTIE), a thick target experiment (3.3 atoms/barn) optimized for the small cross sections in this energy region.

Laser spectroscopy of the $^2S_{1/2} - ^2P_{1/2}$, $^2P_{3/2}$ transitions in stored and cooled relativistic C$^{3+}$ ions

The $^2S_{1/2} - ^2P_{1/2}$ and $^2S_{1/2} - ^2P_{3/2}$ transitions in Li-like carbon ions stored and cooled at a velocity of $\beta \approx 0.47$ in the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt have been investigated in a laser spectroscopy experiment. Resonance wavelengths were obtained using a new continuous-wave UV laser system and a novel extreme UV (XUV) detection system to detect forward emitted fluorescence photons. The results obtained for the two transitions are compared to existing experimental and theoretical data. A discrepancy found in an earlier laser spectroscopy measurement at the ESR with results from plasma spectroscopy and interferometry has been resolved and agreement between experiment and theory is confirmed.

Absolute Calibration of the DANCE Thermal Neutron Beam using Sodium Activation

The measurement of the neutron capture cross-section as a function of energy in the thermal range requires a precise knowledge of the absolute neutron flux. In this paper a new method of calibrating a thermal neutron beam using the controlled activation of sodium is described. The method is applied to the FP-14 Time Of Flight neutron beam line at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center to calibrate the beam to a precision of $\pm5$%.

Measurement of the neutron capture cross-section on argon

The use of argon as a detection and shielding medium for neutrino and dark matter experiments has made the precise knowledge of the cross section for neutron capture on argon an important design and operational parameter. Since previous measurements were averaged over thermal spectra and have significant disagreements, a differential measurement has been performed using a Time-Of-Flight neutron beam and a $\sim$4$\pi$ gamma spectrometer. A fit to the differential cross section from $0.015-0.15$\,eV, assuming a $1/v$ energy dependence, yields $\sigma^{2200} = 673 \pm 26 \text{ (stat.)} \pm 59 \text{ (sys.)}$\,mb.
