Anomalous thermal conductivity of frustrated Heisenberg spin-chains and ladders

We study the thermal transport properties of several quantum spin chains and ladders. We find indications for a diverging thermal conductivity at finite temperatures for the models examined. The temperature at which the non-diverging prefactor κ^{(th)}(T) peaks is in general substantially lower than the temperature at which the corresponding specific heat c_V(T) is maximal. We show that this result of the microscopic approach leads to a substantial reduction for estimates of the magnetic mean-free path λextracted by analyzing recent experiments, as compared to similar analyses by phenomenological theories.

Conductivity of quantum-spin chains: A Quantum Monte Carlo approach

We discuss zero-frequency transport properties of various spin-1/2 chains. We show, that a careful analysis of Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) data on the imaginary axis allows to distinguish between intrinsic ballistic and diffusive transport. We determine the Drude weight, current-relaxation life-time and the mean-free path for integrable and a non-integrable quantum-spin chain. We discuss, in addition, some phenomenological relations between various transport-coefficients and thermal response functions.

Properties of electrons near a Van Hove singularity

The Fermi surface of most hole-doped cuprates is close to a Van Hove singularity at the M point. A two-dimensional electronic system, whose Fermi surface is close to a Van Hove singularity shows a variety of weak coupling instabilities. It is a convenient model to study the interplay between antiferromagnetism and anisotropic superconductivity. The renormalization group approach is reviewed with emphasis on the underlying physical processes. General properties of the phase diagram and possible deformations of the Fermi surface due to the Van Hove proximity are described.

A microscopic model for a class of mixed-spin quantum antiferromagnets

We propose a microscopic model that describes the magnetic behavior of the mixed-spin quantum systems R$_2$BaNiO$_5$ (R= magnetic rare earth). An evaluation of the properties of this model by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations shows remarkable good agreement with the experimental data and provides new insight into the physics of mixed-spin quantum magnets.

Low-temperature transport in Heisenberg chains

A technique to determine accurately transport properties of integrable and non-integrable quantum-spin chains at finite temperatures by Quantum Monte-Carlo is presented. The reduction of the Drude weight by interactions in the integrable gapless regime is evaluated. Evidence for the absence of a Drude weight in the gapless regime of a non-integrable system with longer-ranged interactions is presented. We estimate the effect of the non-integrability on the transport properties and compare with recent experiments on one-dimensional quantum-spin chains.

Modeling the electronic behavior of $γ$-LiV2O5: a microscopic study

We determine the electronic structure of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg compound $γ$-LiV$_2$O$_5$, which has two inequivalent vanadium ions, V(1) and V(2), via density-functional calculations. We find a relative V(1)-V(2) charge ordering of roughly $70:30$. We discuss the influence of the charge ordering on the electronic structure and the magnetic behavior. We give estimates of the basic hopping matrix elements and compare with the most studied $α'$-NaV$_2$O$_5$.

Fermi surface renormalization in Hubbard ladders

We derive the one-loop renormalization equations for the shift in the Fermi-wavevectors for one-dimensional interacting models with four Fermi-points (two left and two right movers) and two Fermi velocities v_1 and v_2. We find the shift to be proportional to (v_1-v_2)U^2, where U is the Hubbard-U. Our results apply to the Hubbard ladder and to the t_1-t_2 Hubbard model. The Fermi-sea with fewer particles tends to empty. The stability of a saddle point due to shifts of the Fermi-energy and the shift of the Fermi-wavevector at the Mott-Hubbard transition are discussed.

Can a frustrated spin-cluster model describe the low-temperature physics of NaV_2O_5 ?

Recent experimental evidence suggest the existence of three distinct V-valence states (V^{+4}, V^{+4.5} and V^{+5}) in the low-temperature phase of NaV_2O_5 in apparent discrepancy with the observed spin-gap. We investigate a novel spin cluster model, consisting of weakly coupled, frustrated four-spin clusters aligned along the crystallographic b-axis that was recently proposed to reconcile these experimental observations. We have studied the phase diagram and the magnon dispersion relation of this model using DMRG, exact diagonalization and a novel cluster-operator theory. We find a spin-gap for all parameter values and two distinct phases, a cluster phase and a Haldane phase. We evaluate the size of the gap and the magnon dispersion and find no parameter regime which would reproduce the experimental results. We conclude that this model is inappropriate for the low-temperature regime of NaV_2O_5.

On the evaluation of the specific heat and general off-diagonal n-point correlation functions within the loop algorithm

We present an efficient way to compute diagonal and off-diagonal n-point correlation functions for quantum spin-systems within the loop algorithm. We show that the general rules for the evaluation of these correlation functions take an especially simple form within the framework of directed loops. These rules state that contributing loops have to close coherently. As an application we evaluate the specific heat for the case of spin chains and ladders.

Phase Diagram of High-T_c Superconductors from a Field Theory Model

The renormalization group approach to correlated fermions is used to determine the phase diagram of the oxide cuprates modeled by the t-t' Hubbard model at the Van Hove filling. Spin-dependent interactions give rise to instabilities corresponding to ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting phases. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity arise from the same interactions, and compete in the same region of parameter space.

Weak Coupling Phases of the Attractive $t-t'$ Hubbard Model at the Van Hove Filling

We apply a wilsonian renormalization group approach to the continuum limit of the attractive $t-t'$ Hubbard model, taken when the Fermi level is at the Van Hove singularity of the density of states. The model has well-defined scaling properties and the effective couplings display an unbounded flow in the infrared. We determine the leading instabilities by computing the different response functions up to $t' = 0.5 t$. The phase diagram shows a large boundary between superconducting and charge-density-wave phases, that merge in a triple point with a phase separation instability. The latter is realized down to very low coupling constant, as the Fermi sea degenerates towards a pair of straight lines near $t' = 0.5 t$.

Superconducting, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in the t-t' Hubbard model

We apply a renormalization group approach to the determination of the phase diagram of the t-t' Hubbard model at the Van Hove filling, as function of t'/t, for small values of U/t. The model presents ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting phases. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity arise from the same interactions, and compete in the same region of parameter space.

Strong coupling phases of the $t-t'$ Hubbard model

We study the strong coupling regime of the $t-t'$ Hubbard model, filled up to the level of the van Hove singularities, by means of an exact diagonalization approach. We characterize the different phases of the model by the different sectors of the Hilbert space with given quantum numbers. By looking for the ground state of the system, we find essentially the competition between a state with incipient ferromagnetism and other mimicking a $d$-wave condensate, which has the lowest energy in a large region of the phase space.

Relaxational behavior of the infinite-range Ising spin-glass in a transverse field

We study the zero-temperature behavior of the infinite-ranged Ising spin glass in a transverse field. Using spin summation techniques and Monte Carlo methods we characterize the zero-temperature quantum transition. Our results are well compatible with a value $ν=\frac{1}{4}$ for the correlation length exponent, $z=4$ for the dynamical exponent and an algebraic decay $t^{-1}$ for the imaginary-time correlation function. The zero-temperature relaxation of the energy in the presence of the transverse field shows that the system monotonically reaches the ground state energy due to tunneling processes and displays strong glassy effects.

Nonperturbative approach to the Hubbard model in C60 cluster

We propose a computational scheme for the Hubbard model in the C60 cluster in which the interaction with the Fermi sea of charges added to the neutral molecule is switched on sequentially. This is applied to the calculation of the balance of charging energies, within a low-energy truncation of the space of states which produces moderate errors for an intermediate range of the interaction strength.
