Quantum dynamics in two and three-dimensional quasiperiodic tilings

We investigate the properties of electronic states in two and three-dimensional quasiperiodic structures: the generalized Rauzy tilings. Exact diagonalizations, limited to clusters with a few thousands sites, suggest that eigenstates are critical and more extended at the band edges than at the band center. These trends are clearly confirmed when we compute the spreading of energy-filtered wavepackets, using a new algorithm which allows to treat systems of about one million sites. The present approach to quantum dynamics, which gives also access to the low frequency conductivity, opens new perspectives in the analyzis of two and three-dimensional models.

Strongly correlated hopping and many-body bound states

We study a system in which the quantum dynamics of electrons depend on the particle density in their neighborhood. For any on-site repulsive interaction, we show that the exact two-body and three-body ground states are bound states. We also discuss the finite density case in a mean-field framework and we show that the system can undergo an unusual transition from an effective attractive interaction to a repulsive one, when varying the electron density.

Aharonov-Bohm cages in the GaAlAs/GaAs system

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations have been observed in a lattice formed by a two dimensional rhombus tiling. This observation is in good agreement with a recent theoretical calculation of the energy spectrum of this so-called T3 lattice. We have investigated the low temperature magnetotransport of the T3 lattice realized in the GaAlAs/GaAs system. Using an additional electrostatic gate, we have studied the influence of the channel number on the oscillations amplitude. Finally, the role of the disorder on the strength of the localization is theoretically discussed.

Interacting fermions in self-similar potentials

We consider interacting spinless fermions in one dimension embedded in self-similar quasiperiodic potentials. We examine generalizations of the Fibonacci potential known as precious mean potentials. Using a bosonization technique and a renormalization group analysis, we study the low-energy physics of the system. We show that it undergoes a metal-insulator transition for any filling factor, with a critical interaction that strongly depends on the position of the Fermi level in the Fourier spectrum of the potential. For some positions of the Fermi level the metal-insulator transition occurs at the non interacting point. The repulsive side is an insulator with a gapped spectrum whereas in the attractive side the spectrum is gapless and the properties of the system are described by a Luttinger liquid. We compute the transport properties and give the characteristic exponents associated to the frequency and temperature dependence of the conductivity.

Generalized quasiperiodic Rauzy tilings

We present a geometrical description of new canonical $d$-dimensional codimension one quasiperiodic tilings based on generalized Fibonacci sequences. These tilings are made up of rhombi in 2d and rhombohedra in 3d as the usual Penrose and icosahedral tilings. Thanks to a natural indexing of the sites according to their local environment, we easily write down, for any approximant, the sites coordinates, the connectivity matrix and we compute the structure factor.

How to escape Aharonov-Bohm cages ?

We study the effect of disorder and interactions on a recently proposed magnetic field induced localization mechanism. We show that both partially destroy the extreme confinement of the excitations occuring in the pure case and give rise to unusual behavior. We also point out the role of the edge states that allows for a propagation of the electrons in these systems.

Interaction induced delocalisation for two particles in a periodic potential

We consider two interacting particles evolving in a one-dimensional periodic structure embedded in a magnetic field. We show that the strong localization induced by the magnetic field for particular values of the flux per unit cell is destroyed as soon as the particles interact. We study the spectral and the dynamical aspects of this transition.

On the charge radius of the neutrino

Using the pinch technique we construct at one-loop order a neutrino charge radius, which is finite, depends neither on the gauge-fixing parameter nor on the gauge-fixing scheme employed, and is process-independent. This definition stems solely from an effective proper photon-neutrino one-loop vertex, with no reference to box or self-energy contributions. The role of the $WW$ box in this construction is critically examined. In particular it is shown that the exclusion of the effective WW box from the definition of the neutrino charge radius is not a matter of convention but is in fact dynamically realized when the target-fermions are right-handedly polarized. In this way we obtain a unique decomposition of effective self-energies, vertices, and boxes, which separately respect electroweak gauge invariance. We elaborate on the tree-level origin of the mechanism which enforces at one-loop level massive cancellations among the longitudinal momenta appearing in the Feynman diagrams, and in particular those associated with the non-abelian character of the theory. Various issues related to the known connection between the pinch technique and the Background Field Method are further clarified. Explicit closed expressions for the neutrino charge radius are reported.

Localization Effect in a 2D Superconducting Network without Disorder

The superconducting properties of a two-dimensional superconducting wire network with a new geometry have been measured as a function of the external magnetic field. The extreme localization effect recently predicted for this periodic lattice is revealed as a suppression of the critical current when the applied magnetic field corresponds to half a flux quantum per unit cell. For this particular magnetic field, the observed vortex state configuration is highly disordered.

Transmission through quantum networks

We propose a simple formalism to calculate the conductance of any quantum network made of one-dimensional quantum wires. We apply this method to analyze, for two periodic systems, the modulation of this conductance with respect to the magnetic field. We also study the influence of an elastic disorder on the periodicity of the AB oscillations and we show that a recently proposed localization mechanism induced by the magnetic field resists to such a perturbation. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this approach for the understanding of a recent experiment on GaAs/GaAlAs networks.

Magnetic field induced localization in a two-dimensional superconducting wire network

We report transport measurements on superconducting wire networks which provide the first experimental evidence of a new localization phenomenon induced by magnetic field on a 2D periodic structure. In the case of a superconducting wave function this phenomenon manifests itself as a depression of the network critical current and of the superconducting transition temperature at a half magnetic flux quantum per tile. In addition, the strong broadening of the resistive transition observed at this field is consistent with enhanced phase fluctuations due to this localization mechanism.

Charge and Magnetic Moment of the Neutrino in the Background Field Method and in the Linear R_xi^L Gauge

We present a computation of the charge and the magnetic moment of the neutrino in the recently developed electro-weak Background Field Method and in the linear $R_ξ^L$ gauge. First, we deduce a formal Ward-Takahashi identity which implies the immediate cancellation of the neutrino electric charge. This Ward-Takahashi identity is as simple as that for QED. The computation of the (proper and improper) one loop vertex diagrams contributing to the neutrino electric charge is also presented in an arbitrary gauge, checking in this way the Ward-Takahashi identity previously obtained. Finally, the calculation of the magnetic moment of the neutrino, in the minimal extension of the Standard Model with massive Dirac neutrinos, is presented, showing its gauge parameter and gauge structure independence explicitly.

LAB observables for the muon polarization in K^+ --> π^+ μ^+ μ^-

We analyse the muon longitudinal polarization asymmetry Δ_long in the decay K^+ --> π^+ μ^+ mu^-. It is stressed that, since the muon helicities are not Lorentz-invariant quantities, the magnitude of Δ_long depends in general on the reference frame. We consider the muon helicities in the LAB system, and study the sensitivity of the longitudinal polarization asymmetry to the flavour-mixing parameters in the Standard Model for stopped and in-flight decaying K^+. A similar analysis is carried out for the decay K_L --> μ^+ μ^-. We find that in both cases the asymmetry is diluted when increasing the energy of the decaying kaons.

Correlated Fermions in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic potential

We study analytically one-dimensional interacting spinless fermions in a Fibonacci potential. We show that the effects of the quasiperiodic modulation are intermediate between those of a commensurate potential and a disordered one. The system exhibits a metal-insulator transition whose position depends both on the strength of the correlations and on the position of the Fermi level. Consequently, the conductivity displays a power law like size and frequency behaviour characterized by a non trivial exponent.

Tau weak dipole moments from azimuthal asymmetries

We show that transverse and normal single-$tau$ polarization of $tau$ pairs produced at $e^+$ $e^-$ unpolarized collisions, at the $Z$ peak, are sensitive to weak (magnetic and electric) dipole moments of the $tau$. We also show how these components of the $τ$ polarization are accessible by measuring appropriate azimuthal asymmetries in the angular distribution of its decay products. Sensitivities of the order of $10^{-18}$ $e\cdot cm$, for the weak-electric dipole moment, and $10^{-4}$ ($10^{-3}$), for the real (imaginary) part of the weak-magnetic dipole moment of $τ$, may be achieved. Compatible bounds are also presented from spin-spin correlated asymmetries.

Spectrum and diffusion for a class of tight-binding models on hypercubes

We propose a class of exactly solvable anisotropic tight-binding models on an infinite-dimensional hypercube. The energy spectrum is analytically computed and is shown to be fractal and/or absolutely continuous according to the value hopping parameters. In both cases, the spectral and diffusion exponents are derived. The main result is that, even if the spectrum is absolutely continuous, the diffusion exponent for the wave packet may be anything between 0 and 1 depending upon the class of models.

Aharonov-Bohm cages in two-dimensional structures

We present an extreme localization mechanism induced by a magnetic field for tight-binding electrons in two-dimensional structures. This spectacular phenomenon is investigated for a large class of tilings (periodic, quasiperiodic, or random). We are led to introduce the Aharonov-Bohm cages defined as the set of sites eventually visited by a wavepacket that can, for particular values of the magnetic flux, be bounded. We finally discuss the quantum dynamics which exhibits an original pulsating behaviour.

$ηγZ$ anomaly from the $η-->γμ+μ-$ decay

We show that the $ηγZ$ anomaly can be measured by analysing parity-violating effects in the $η-->γμ+μ-$ decay. In this sense, we find that the longitudinal polarization of the outgoing $μ^+$ is an appropriate observable to be considered in future high-statistics $η$ factories. The effect is expected to lie in the range $10^{-5}-10^{-6}$ in the Standard Model.
