Solar neutrino problem accounting for self-consistent magnetohydrodynamics solution for solar magnetic fields

The analysis of the resonant spin-flavour (RSF) solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the framework of simplest analytic solutions to the solar magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations is presented. We performed the global fit of the recent solar neutrino data, including event rates as well as day and night recoil electron spectra induced by solar neutrino interactions in SuperKamiokande. We compare quantitatively our simplest MHD-RSF fit with vacuum oscillation (VAC) and MSW--type (SMA, LMA and LOW) solutions to the solar neutrino problem using a common well-calibrated theoretical calculation and fit procedure and find MHD-RSF fit to be somewhat better than those obtained for the favored neutrino oscillation solutions. We made the predictions for future experiments to disentangle the MHD-RSF scenario from other scenarios.

Light Sterile Neutrino from extra dimensions and Four-Neutrino Solutions to Neutrino Anomalies

We propose a four-neutrino model which can reconcile the existing data coming from underground experiments in terms of neutrino oscillations, together with the hint from the LSND experiment and a possible neutrino contribution to the hot dark matter of the Universe. It applies the idea that extra compact dimensions, probed only by gravity and possibly gauge-singlet fields, can lower the fundamental scales such as the Planck, string or unification scales. Our fourth light neutrino $ν_s$ ($s$ for sterile) is identified with the zero mode of the Kaluza-Klein states. To first approximation ν_sterile combines with the nu_mu in order to form a Dirac neutrino with mass in the eV range leaving the other two neutrinos massless. The smallness of this mass scale (suitable for LSND and Hot Dark Matter) arises without appealing neither to a see-saw mechanism nor to a radiative mechanism, but from the volume factor associated with the canonical normalization of the wave-function of the bulk field in the compactified dimensions. % On the other hand the splitting between \nm and ν_sterile (atmospheric scale) as well as the mass of the two other neutrinos (solar mass scale) arise from the violation of the fermion number on distant branes. We also discuss alternative scenarios involving flavour-changing interactions. In one of them \ne can be in the electron-volt range and therefore be probed in beta decay studies.

Global three-neutrino oscillation analysis of neutrino data

A global analysis of the solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrino data is presented in terms of three-neutrino oscillations. We include the most recent solar neutrino rates of Homestake, SAGE, GALLEX and GNO, as well as the recent 1117 day Super-Kamiokande data sample, including the recoil electron energy spectrum both for day and night periods and we treat in a unified way the full parameter space for oscillations, correctly accounting for the transition from the matter enhanced (MSW) to the vacuum oscillations regime. Likewise, we include in our description conversions with $θ_{12} > π/4$. For the atmospheric data we perform our analysis of the contained events and the upward-going $ν$-induced muon fluxes, including the previous data samples of Frejus, IMB, Nusex, and Kamioka experiments as well as the full 71 kton-yr (1144 days) Super-Kamiokande data set, the recent 5.1 kton-yr contained events of Soudan2 and the results on upgoing muons from the MACRO detector. We first present the allowed regions of solar and atmospheric oscillation parameters $θ_{12}$, $Δm^2_{21}$ and $θ_{23}$, $Δm^2_{32}$, respectively, as a function of $θ_{13}$ and determine the constraints from atmospheric and solar data on the mixing angle $θ_{13}$, common to solar and atmospheric analyses. We also obtain the allowed ranges of parameters from the full five-dimensional combined analysis of the solar, atmospheric and reactor data.

Minimalistic Neutrino Mass Model

We consider the simplest model which solves the solar and atmospheric neutrino puzzles, in the sense that it contains the smallest amount of beyond the Standard Model ingredients. The solar neutrino data is accounted for by Planck-mass effects while the atmospheric neutrino anomaly is due to the existence of a single right-handed neutrino at an intermediate mass scale between 10^9 GeV and 10^14 GeV. Even though the neutrino mixing angles are not exactly predicted, they can be naturally large, which agrees well with the current experimental situation. Furthermore, the amount of lepton asymmetry produced in the early universe by the decay of the right-handed neutrino is very predictive and may be enough to explain the current baryon-to-photon ratio if the right-handed neutrinos are produced out of thermal equilibrium. One definitive test for the model is the search for anomalous seasonal effects at Borexino.

The Simplest Resonant Spin--Flavour Solution to the Solar Neutrino Problem

We re-analyse the resonant spin-flavour (RSF) solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the framework of analytic solutions to the solar magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations. By substantially eliminating the arbitrariness associated to the magnetic field profile due to both mathematical consistency and physical requirements we propose the simplest scheme (MHD-RSF, for short) for solar neutrino conversion using realistic static MHD solutions. Using such effective two-parameter scheme we perform the first global fit of the recent solar neutrino data, including event rates as well as zenith angle distributions and recoil electron spectra induced by solar neutrino interactions in Superkamiokande. We compare quantitatively our simplest MHD-RSF fit with vacuum oscillation (VAC) and MSW-type (SMA, LMA and LOW) solutions to the solar neutrino problem using a common well-calibrated theoretical calculation and fit procedure. We find our MHD-RSF fit to be somewhat better than those obtained for the favored neutrino oscillation solutions, though not in a statistically significant way. We briefly discuss the prospects to disentangle our MHD-RSF scenario at future solar neutrino experiments, giving some predictions for the SNO experiment.

Bilinear R-parity violating SUSY: Solving the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems

Bilinear R-parity violation is a simple extension of the MSSM allowing for Majorana neutrino masses. One of the three neutrinos picks up mass by mixing with the neutralinos of the MSSM, while the other two neutrinos gain mass from 1-loop corrections. Once 1-loop corrections are carefully taken into account the model is able to explain solar and atmospheric neutrino data for specific though simple choices of the R-parity violating parameters.

Broken R Parity, Neutrino Anomalies and Collider Tests

The solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies constitute the only solid and most remarkable evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model, indicating that the lepton mixing matrix is fundamentally distinct from that describing the quarks. Here I will report on how supersymmetry with spontaneously or bilinearly broken R Parity provides a predictive theory for neutrino mass and mixing which leads to a solution of neutrino anomalies which can be clearly tested at high energy accelerators.

Reconciling neutrino anomalies in a simple four-neutrino scheme with R-parity violation

We propose a simple extension of the MSSM based on extra compact dimensions which includes an $SU(2) \otimes U(1)$ singlet superfield. The fermion present in this superfield is the sterile neutrino, which combines with one linear combination of $ν_e-ν_μ-ν_τ$ to form a Dirac pair whose mass accounts for the LSND anomaly. Its small mass can be ascribed to a volume suppression factor associated with extra compact dimensions. On the other hand the sterile neutrino scalar partner can trigger the spontaneous violation of R-parity, thereby inducing the necessary mass splittings to fit also the solar and atmospheric neutrino data. Thus the model can explain all neutrino oscillation data. It leads to four predictions for the neutrino oscillation parameters and implies that the atmospheric neutrino problem must include at least some $ν_μ \to ν_s$ oscillations, which will be testable in the near future. Moreover it also predicts that the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) decays visibly via lepton number violating modes, which could be searched for at present and future accelerators.

Bilinear R-parity Violation and Small Neutrino Masses: a Self-consistent Framework

We study extensions of supersymmetric models without R-parity which include an anomalous U(1)_H horizontal symmetry. Bilinear R-parity violating terms induce a neutrino mass at tree level of approximately $(θ^2)^δ$ eV where $θ\approx 0.22$ is the U(1)_H breaking parameter and $δ$ is an integer number that depends on the horizontal charges of the leptons. For $δ=1$ a unique self-consistent model arises in which i) all the superpotential trilinear R-parity violating couplings are forbidden by holomorphy; ii) the tree level neutrino mass falls in the range suggested by the atmospheric neutrino problem; iii) radiative contributions to neutrino masses are strongly suppressed resulting in a squared solar mass difference of few 10^{-8} eV^2 which only allows for the LOW (or quasi-vacuum) solution to the solar neutrino problem; iv) the neutrino mixing angles are not suppressed by powers of $θ$ and can naturally be large.

Neutrino Masses and Mixings from Supersymmetry with Bilinear R--Parity Violation: A Theory for Solar and Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations

The simplest unified extension of the MSSM with bi-linear R--Parity violation naturally predicts a hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum, in which one neutrino acquires mass by mixing with neutralinos, while the other two get mass radiatively. We have performed a full one-loop calculation of the neutralino-neutrino mass matrix in the bi-linear \rp MSSM, taking special care to achieve a manifestly gauge invariant calculation. Moreover we have performed the renormalization of the heaviest neutrino, needed in order to get meaningful results. The atmospheric mass scale and maximal mixing angle arise from tree-level physics, while solar neutrino scale and oscillations follow from calculable one-loop corrections. If universal supergravity assumptions are made on the soft-supersymmetry breaking terms then the atmospheric scale is calculable as a function of a single \rp violating parameter by the renormalization group evolution due to the non-zero bottom quark Yukawa coupling. The solar neutrino problem must be accounted for by the small mixing angle (SMA) MSW solution. If these assumptions are relaxed then one can implement large mixing angle solutions, either MSW or just-so. The theory predicts the lightest supersymmetic particle (LSP) decay to be observable at high-energy colliders, despite the smallness of neutrino masses indicated by experiment. This provides an independent way to test this solution of the atmospheric and solar neutrino anomalies.

Bilinear R-parity violating SUSY: Neutrinoless double beta decay in the light of solar and atmospheric neutrino data

Neutrinoless double beta ($\znbb$) decay is considered within bilinear R-parity breaking supersymmetry, including the full one-loop corrections to the neutrino-neutralino mass matrix. Expected rates for $\znbb$ decay in this model are discussed in light of recent atmospheric and solar neutrino data. We conclude that (a) tree-level calculations for $\znbb$ decay within the bilinear model are not reliable in the range of parameters preferred by current solar and atmospheric neutrino problems. And (b) if the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems are to be solved within bilinear R-parity violating SUSY the expected rates for $\znbb$ decay are very low; the effective Majorana neutrino mass at most 0.01 eV and typical values being one order of magnitude lower. Observing $\znbb$ decay in the next round of experiments therefore would rule out the bilinear R-parity violating supersymmetric model as an explanation for solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, as well as any hierarchical scheme for neutrino masses, unless new neutrino interactions are present.

Searching for R-Parity Violation at Run-II of the Tevatron

We present an outlook for possible discovery of supersymmetry with broken R-parity at Run II of the Tevatron. We first present a review of the literature and an update of the experimental bounds. In turn we then discuss the following processes: 1. Resonant slepton production followed by R-parity violating decay, (a) via $LQD^c$ and (b) via $LLE^c$. 2. How to distinguish resonant slepton production from $Z'$ or $W'$ production. 3. Resonant slepton production followed by the decay to neutralino LSP, which decays via $LQD^c$. 4. Resonant stop production followed by the decay to a chargino, which cascades to the neutralino LSP. 5. Gluino pair production followed by the cascade decay to charm squarks which decay directly via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 6. Squark pair production followed by the cascade decay to the neutralino LSP which decays via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 7. MSSM pair production followed by the cascade decay to the LSP which decays (a) via $LLE^c$, (b) via $LQD^c$, and (c) via $U^cD^cD^c$, respectively. 8. Top quark and top squark decays in spontaneous R-parity violation.

Updated Global Analysis of the Atmospheric Neutrino Data in terms of neutrino oscillations

A global analysis of all the available atmospheric neutrino data is presented in terms of neutrino oscillations in the nu_mu -> nu_tau and nu_mu -> nu_s channels, where nu_s denotes a sterile neutrino. We perform our analysis of the contained events data as well as the upward-going neutrino-induced muon fluxes. In addition to the previous data samples of Frejus, Nusex, IMB and Kamioka experiments, we include the full data set of the 52 kton-yr of Super-Kamiokande, the recent 4.6 kton-yr contained events of Soudan2 and the results on upgoing muons from the MACRO and Baksan detectors. From the statistical analysis it emerges that the nu_mu -> nu_tau channel provides the best agreement with the combined data, with a best fit point of sin^2(2 theta) = 0.99 and Delta m^2 = 3.0 * 10^{-3} eV^2. Although somehow disfavoured, the nu_mu -> nu_s channels cannot be ruled out on the basis of the global fit to the full set of observables.

Light Stop: MSSM versus R-parity violation

We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest stops in models where R-parity is broken by bilinear terms. In this class of models we consider scenarios where the R-parity breaking two-body decay stop_1 -> tau + b competes with the leading three-body decays stop_1 -> W^+ + b + neutralino_1, H^+ + b + neutralino_1, b slepton^+_i neutrino_l, b sneutrino_l l^+ (l=e, mu, tau). We demonstrate that the R-parity violating decay can be the dominant one. In particular we focus on the implications for a future electron posistion Linear Collider.

Supernova Bounds on Majoron-emitting decays of light neutrinos

Neutrino masses arising from the spontaneous violation of ungauged lepton-number are accompanied by a physical Goldstone boson, generically called Majoron. In the high-density supernova medium the effects of Majoron-emitting neutrino decays are important even if they are suppressed in vacuo by small neutrino masses and/or small off-diagonal couplings. We reconsider the influence of these decays on the neutrino signal of supernovae in the light of recent Super-Kamiokande data on solar and atmospheric neutrinos. We find that majoron-neutrino coupling constants in the range $3\times 10^{-7}\lsim g\lsim 2\times 10^{-5}$ or $g \gsim 3 \times 10^{-4}$ are excluded by the observation of SN1987A. Then we discuss the potential of Superkamiokande and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory to detect majoron neutrino interactions in the case of a future galactic supernova. We find that these experiments could probe majoron neutrino interactions with improved sensitivity.

A potential test of the CP properties and Majorana nature of neutrinos

The scattering of solar neutrinos on electrons may reveal their CP properties, which are particularly sensitive to their Majorana nature. The cross section is sensitive to the neutrino dipole moments through an interference of electro-magnetic and weak amplitudes. We show how future solar neutrino experiments with good angular resolution and low energy threshold, such as Hellaz, can be sensitive to the resulting azimuthal asymmetries in event number, and could therefore provide valuable information on the CP properties and the nature of the neutrinos, provided the solar magnetic field direction is fixed.

On the Interpretation of the Atmospheric Neutrino Data in Terms of Flavor Changing Neutrino Interactions

Flavour changing (FC) neutrino-matter interactions have been proposed as a solution to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. Here we perform the analysis of the full set of the recent 52 kTy Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data, including the zenith angle distribution of the contained events as well as the higher energy upward-going stopping and through-going muon events. Our results show that the FC mechanism can describe the full data sample with a chi^2_{min}=44/(33 d.o.f) which is acceptable at the 90% confidence level. The combined analysis confines the amount of FC to be either close to maximal or to the level of about (10-50)%.

Neutrino Physics at the Turn of the Millenium

Recent solar & atmospheric nu-data strongly indicate need for physics beyond the Standard Model. I review the ways of reconciling them in terms of 3-nu oscillations. Though not implied by data, bi-maximal nu-mixing models emerge as a possibility. SUSY with broken R-parity provides an attractive way to incorporate it, opening the possibility of testing nu-anomalies at high- energy colliders such as the LHC or at the upcoming long-baseline or nu- factory experiments. Reconciling, in addition, the LSND hint requires a fourth, light sterile neutrino, nus. The simplest are the most symmetric scenarios, in which 2 of the 4 neutrinos are maximally-mixed and lie at the LSND scale, while the others are at the solar scale. The lightness of nus, the nearly maximal atmospheric mixing, and the solar/atmospheric splittings all follow naturally from the assumed lepton-number symmetry and its breaking. These basic schemes can be distinguished at neutral-current-sensitive solar & atmospheric neutrino experiments such as SNO. However underground experiments have not yet proven neutrino masses, as there are many alternatives. For example flavour changing interactions can play an important role in the explanation of solar and contained atmospheric data and could be tested e.g through μ\to e + γ, μ-e conversion in nuclei, unaccompanied by neutrino-less double beta decay. Conversely, a short-lived numu might play a role in the explanation of the atmospheric data. Finally, in the presence of a nus, a long-lived heavy nutau could delay the time at which the matter and radiation contributions to the energy density of the Universe become equal, reducing density fluctuations on smaller scales, thus saving the standard CDM scenario, while the light nue, numu and nus would explain the solar & atmospheric data.
