First-order transition in the itinerant ferromagnet CoS$_{1.9}$Se$_{0.1}$

Undoped CoS$_2$ is an isotropic itinerant ferromagnet with a continuous or nearly continuous phase transition at $T_{\rm C} = 122$ K. In the doped CoS$_{1.9}$Se$_{0.1}$ system, the Curie temperature is lowered to $T_{\rm C} = 90$ K, and the transition becomes clearly first order in nature. In particular we find a discontinuous evolution of the spin dynamics as well as strong time relaxation in the ferromagnetic Bragg intensity and small angle neutron scattering in vicinity of the ferromagnetic transition. In the ordered state the long-wavelength spin excitations were found to be conventional ferromagnetic spin-waves with negligible spin-wave gap ($ < 0.04$ meV), indicating that this system is also an excellent isotropic (soft) ferromagnet. In a wide temperature range up to $0.9T_{\rm C}$, the spin-wave stiffness $D(T)$ follows the prediction of the two-magnon interaction theory, $D(T) = D(0)(1 - AT^{5/2})$, with $D(0) = 131.7 \pm 2.8$ meV-Å$^{2}$. The stiffness, however, does not collapse as $T \to T_{\rm C}$ from below. Instead a quasielastic central peak abruptly develops in the excitation spectrum, quite similar to results found in the colossal magnetoresistance oxides such as (La-Ca)MnO$_3$.

First-order nature of the ferromagnetic phase transition in (La-Ca)MnO_3 near optimal doping

Neutron scattering has been used to study the nature of the ferromagnetic transition in single crystals of La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 and La_0.8Ca_0.2MnO_3, and polycrystalline samples of La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3 and La_5/8Ca_3/8MnO_3 where the naturally occurring O-16 can be replaced with the O-18 isotope. Small angle neutron scattering on the x=0.3 single crystal reveals a discontinuous change in the scattering at the Curie temperature for wave vectors below ~0.065 A^-1. Strong relaxation effects are observed for this domain scattering, for the magnetic order parameter, and for the quasielastic scattering, demonstrating that the transition is not continuous in nature. There is a large oxygen isotope effect observed for the T_C in the polycrystalline samples. For the optimally doped x=3/8 sample we observed T_C(O-16)=266.5 K and T_C(O-18)=261.5 K at 90% O-18 substitution. The temperature dependence of the spin-wave stiffness is found to be identical for the two samples despite changes in T_C. Hence, T_C is not solely determined by the magnetic subsystem, but instead the ferromagnetic phase is truncated by the formation of polarons which cause an abrupt transition to the paramagnetic, insulating state. Application of uniaxial stress in the x=0.3 single crystal sharply enhances the polaron scattering at room temperature. Measurements of the phonon density-of-states show only modest differences above and below T_C and between the two different isotopic samples.

Neutron Scattering, Magnetometry, and Quantum Monte Carlo Study of the Randomly-Diluted Spin-1/2 Square-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We have successfully grown sizable single crystals of La_2Cu_{1-z}(Zn,Mg)_zO_4 with up to nearly half of the magnetic Cu sites replaced by non-magnetic Zn and Mg. Neutron scattering, SQUID magnetometry, and complementary quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations demonstrate that this material is an excellent model system for the study of site percolation of the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (SLHAF) in the quantum-spin limit S=1/2. Carefully oxygen-reduced samples exhibit Neel order up to the percolation threshold for site dilution, z_p ~ 40.7%. Up to at least z = 35%, the Neel temperature T_N(z) of the experimental system corresponds to the temperature at which QMC indicates that the spin correlations for the nearest-neighbor S=1/2 SLHAF have grown to approximately 100 lattice constants. Neutron scattering measurements of the static structure factor in the paramagnetic regime allow the determination of the two-dimensional spin correlations, which are found to be in excellent quantitative agreement with QMC over a wide common temperature and doping range. Neutron scattering and QMC results for the temperature dependence of the static structure factor amplitude S(π,π) are in good agreement as well. The combined experimental and numerical data presented here provide valuable quantitative information for tests of theories of the randomly-diluted S=1/2 SLHAF.

Inhomogeneous Magnetism in La-doped CaMnO3. (II) Mesoscopic Phase Separation due to Lattice-coupled FM Interactions

A detailed investigation of mesoscopic magnetic and crystallographic phase separation in Ca(1-x)La(x)MnO3, 0.00<=x<=0.20, is reported. Neutron powder diffraction and DC-magnetization techniques have been used to isolate the different roles played by electrons doped into the eg level as a function of their concentration x. The presence of multiple low-temperature magnetic and crystallographic phases within individual polycrystalline samples is argued to be an intrinsic feature of the system that follows from the shifting balance between competing FM and AFM interactions as a function of temperature. FM double-exchange interactions associated with doped eg electrons are favored over competing AFM interactions at higher temperatures, and couple more strongly with the lattice via orbital polarization. These FM interactions thereby play a privileged role, even at low eg electron concentrations, by virtue of structural modifications induced above the AFM transition temperatures.

New Aspects of the Temperature-Magnetic Field Phase Diagram of CeB6

We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic to the field-induced high temperature antiferroquadrupolar magnetically ordered phase transition is CeB6 from 0 to 60 T using a variety of techniques. It is found that the field-dependent phase separation line becomes re-entrant above 35 T and below 10 K. Measurements of resonant ultra-sound, specific heat and neutron diffraction show conclusively that the zero-field temperature-dependent phase transition is to a state with no ordered dipole moments, but with second order transition signatures in both sound attenuation and specific heat.

Unconventional Metallic Magnetism in LaCrSb{3}

Neutron-diffraction measurements in LaCrSb{3} show a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattices below Tc=126 K, with ordered moments of 1.65(4) and 0.49(4) Bohr magnetons per formula unit, respectively (T=10 K), and a spin reorientation transition at ~95 K. No clear peak or step was observed in the specific heat at Tc. Coexisting localized and itinerant spins are suggested.

Glass Transition in the Polaron Dynamics of CMR Manganites

Neutron scattering measurements on a bilayer manganite near optimal doping show that the short-range polarons correlations are completely dynamic at high T, but then freeze upon cooling to a temperature T* 310 K. This glass transition suggests that the paramagnetic/insulating state arises from an inherent orbital frustration that inhibits the formation of a long range orbital- and charge-ordered state. Upon further cooling into the ferromagnetic-metallic state (Tc=114 K), where the polarons melt, the diffuse scattering quickly develops into a propagating, transverse optic phonon.

Doping evolution of the phonon density of states and electron-lattice interaction in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the evolution of the generalized phonon density of states (GDOS) of the $n$-type high-$T_c$ superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (NCCO), from the half-filled Mott-insulator ($x=0$) to the $T_c=24$ K superconductor ($x=0.15$). Upon doping the CuO$_2$ planes in Nd$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (NCO) with electrons by Ce substitution, the most significant change in the GDOS is the softening of the highest phonon branches associated with the Cu-O bond stretching and out-of-plane oxygen vibration modes. However, the softening occurs within the first few percent of Ce-doping and is not related to the electron doping induced nonsuperconducting-superconducting transition (NST) at $x\approx 0.12$. These results suggest that the electron-lattice coupling in the $n$-type high-$T_c$ superconductors is different from that in the $p$-type materials.

Magnetic Order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ Superconductors

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction has been used to search for magnetic order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ superconductors. Most of the measurements were made on a high quality crystal of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$. It is shown that this crystal has highly ordered ortho-II chain order, and a sharp superconducting transition. Inelastic scattering measurements display a very clean spin-gap and pseudogap with any intensity at 10 meV being 50 times smaller than the resonance intensity. The crystal shows a complicated magnetic order that appears to have three components. A magnetic phase is found at high temperatures that seems to stem from an impurity with a moment that is in the $a$-$b$ plane, but disordered on the crystal lattice. A second ordering occurs near the pseudogap temperature that has a shorter correlation length than the high temperature phase and a moment direction that is at least partly along the c-axis of the crystal. Its moment direction, temperature dependence, and Bragg intensities suggest that it may stem from orbital ordering of the $d$-density wave (DDW) type. An additional intensity increase occurs below the superconducting transition. The magnetic intensity in these phases does not change noticeably in a 7 Tesla magnetic field aligned approximately along the c-axis. Searches for magnetic order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ show no signal while a small magnetic intensity is found in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.45}$ that is consistent with c-axis directed magnetic order. The results are contrasted with other recent neutron measurements.

Quantum Impurities in the Two-Dimensional Spin One-Half Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

The study of randomness in low-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets is at the forefront of research in the field of strongly correlated electron systems, yet there have been relatively few experimental model systems. Complementary neutron scattering and numerical experiments demonstrate that the spin-diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet La2Cu(1-z)(Zn,Mg)zO4 is an excellent model material for square-lattice site percolation in the extreme quantum limit of spin one-half. Measurements of the ordered moment and spin correlations provide important quantitative information for tests of theories for this complex quantum-impurity problem.

Effect of pressure on magnetic structure in heavy fermion CeRhIn5

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the incommensurate antiferromagnetic structure of CeRhIn5 is investigated with neutron diffraction using a He pressure cell. At 3.8 kbar, the staggered magnetic moment is 0.37(4) Bohr magneton per Ce at 1.6 K, which is the same as the ambient-pressure value. The Neel temperature T_N=3.8(1) K is also the same as the ambient-pressure one, although the curve of order parameter has changed by pressure. The incommensurability "delta" of the magnetic wave vector q_M=(1/2,1/2,"delta") has reduced from "delta"=0.297 at ambient pressure to "delta"=0.294(1) at 3.8 kbar.

Magnetic Properties of Heavy Fermion Superconductors CeRhIn5 and Ce2RhIn8

Some recent neutron scattering works on CeRhIn5 and Ce2RhIn8, together with related resistivity and specific heat measurements, are summarized. In spite of its layered crystal structure, CeRhIn5 is shown to be 3-dimensional both magnetically and in transport. We also find that the Fisher-Langer behavior is closely followed in CeRhIn5. This may circumvent the Kondo lattice model and support applying established Fermi-liquid superconductivity theory to heavy fermion superconductors.

Carbon Concentration Dependence of the Superconducting Transition Temperature and Structure of MgCxNi3

The crystal structure of the superconductor MgCxNi3 is reported as a function of carbon concentration determined by powder neutron diffraction. The single-phase perovskite structure was found in only a narrow range of carbon content, 0.88 < x < 1.0. The superconducting transition temperature was found to decrease systematically with decreasing carbon concentration. The introduction of carbon vacancies has a significant effect on the positions of the Ni atoms. No evidence for long range magnetic ordering was seen by neutron diffraction for carbon stoichiometries within the perovskite phase stability range.

The Structure of Nanoscale Polaron Correlations in La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7

A system of strongly-interacting electron-lattice polarons can exhibit charge and orbital order at sufficiently high polaron concentrations. In this study, the structure of short-range polaron correlations in the layered colossal magnetoresistive perovskite manganite, La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7, has been determined by a crystallographic analysis of broad satellite maxima observed in diffuse X-ray and neutron scattering data. The resulting q=(0.3,0,1) modulation is a longitudinal octahedral-stretch mode, consistent with an incommensurate Jahn-Teller-coupled charge-density-wave fluctuations, that implies an unusual orbital-stripe pattern parallel to the <100> directions.

Giant anharmonicity and non-linear electron-phonon coupling in MgB$_{2}$; A combined first-principles calculations and neutron scattering study

We report first-principles calculations of the electronic band structure and lattice dynamics for the new superconductor MgB$_{2}$. The excellent agreement between theory and our inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density of states gives confidence that the calculations provide a sound description of the physical properties of the system. The numerical results reveal that the in-plane boron phonons (with E$_{2g}$ symmetry) near the zone-center are very anharmonic, and are strongly coupled to the partially occupied planar B $σ$ bands near the Fermi level. This giant anharmonicity and non-linear electron-phonon coupling is key to explaining the observed high T$_{c}$ and boron isotope effect in MgB$_{2}$

Incommensurate magnetic structure of CeRhIn5

The magnetic structure of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 is determined using neutron diffraction. We find a magnetic wave vector q_M=(1/2,1/2,0.297), which is temperature independent up to T_N=3.8K. A staggered moment of 0.374(5) Bohr magneton at 1.4K, residing on the Ce ion, spirals transversely along the c axis. The nearest neighbor moments on the tetragonal basal plane are aligned antiferromagnetically.
