Single scalar cosmology

The cosmology of flat FLRW universes dominated by a single scalar field is discussed. General features of the evolution of the universe and the scalar field are illustrated by specific examples. In particular the role of critical points, where the scalar field is stationary, is emphasized and their classification and interpretation as stable or unstable end points, or turning points is explained.

On single scalar field cosmology

Observations suggest, that there may be periods in the history of the universe, including the present one, in which its evolution is driven by scalar fields. This paper is concerned with the solution of the evolution equations for a spatially flat universe driven by a single scalar field. Some general theorems relevant to the cosmology of these models are presented, and several approaches to solve the equations are discussed. For some potentials special exact solutions can be found, and for the case of exponential potentials the complete solution is rederived in a new parametrization. For the general case solutions are constructed in terms of a power series expansion in the field. The issue of double-valuedness of such a series expansion in case of oscillating fields with turning points is addressed and resolved.

Geodesic deviations: modeling extreme mass-ratio systems and their gravitational waves

The method of geodesic deviations has been applied to derive accurate analytic approximations to geodesics in Schwarzschild space-time. The results are used to construct analytic expressions for the source terms in the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli-Moncrief equations, which describe the propagation of gravitational waves emitted by a compact massive object moving in the Schwarzschild background space-time. The wave equations are solved numerically to provide the asymptotic form of the wave at large distances for a series of non-circular bound orbits with periastron distances up to the ISCO radius, and the power emitted in gravitational waves by the extreme-mass ratio binary system is computed. The results compare well with those of purely numerical approaches.

Epicycles and Poincaré Resonances in General Relativity

The method of geodesic deviations provides analytic approximations to geodesics in arbitrary background space-times. As such the method is a useful tool in many practical situations. In this note we point out some subtleties in the application of the method related to secular motions, in first as well as in higher order. In particular we work out the general second-order contribution to bound orbits in Schwarzschild space-time and show that it provides very good analytical results all the way up to the innermost stable circular orbit.

Dynamical supersymmetry of spin particle-magnetic field interaction

We study the super and dynamical symmetries of a fermion in a monopole background. The Hamiltonian also involves an additional spin-orbit coupling term, which is parameterized by the gyromagnetic ratio. We construct the superinvariants associated with the system using a SUSY extension of a previously proposed algorithm, based on Grassmann-valued Killing tensors. Conserved quantities arise for certain definite values of the gyromagnetic factor: $\N=1$ SUSY requires $g=2$; a Kepler-type dynamical symmetry only arises, however, for the anomalous values $g=0$ and $g=4$. The two anomalous systems can be unified into an $\N=2$ SUSY system built by doubling the number of Grassmann variables. The planar system also exhibits an $\N=2$ supersymmetry without Grassmann variable doubling.

The gravitational field of a light wave

According to the classical Einstein-Maxwell theory of gravity and electromagnetism, a light-wave traveling in empty space-time is accompanied by a gravitational field of the pp-type. Therefore point masses are scattered by a light wave, even if they carry no electric or magnetic charge, or dipole moment. In this paper I present the explicit form of the metric and curvature for both circularly and linearly polarized light, and discuss the geodesic motion of test masses. This is followed by a discussion of classical scattering of point particles by the gravitational field associated with a circularly polarized electromagnetic block wave. A generalization to a quantum theory of particles in the background of these classical wave fields is presented in terms of the covariant Klein-Gordon equation. I derive the energy spectrum of quantum particles in the specific case of the circularly polarized block wave. Finally, a few general remarks on the extension to a quantum light wave are presented.

The Role of Conformal Symmetry in the Jackiw-Pi Model

The Jackiw-Pi model in 2+1 dimensions is a non-relativistic conformal field theory of charged particles with point-like self-interaction. For specific values of the interaction strengths the classical theory possesses vortex and multi-vortex solutions, which are all degenerate in energy. We compute the full set of first-order perturbative quantum corrections. Only the coupling constant g^2 requires renormalization; the fields and electric charge e are not renormalized. It is shown that in general the conformal symmetries are broken by an anomalous contribution to the conservation law, proportional to the beta-function. However, the beta-function vanishes upon restricting the coupling constants to values g^2 = +/- e^2, which includes the case in which vortex solutions exist. Therefore the existence of vortices also guarantees the preservation of the conformal symmetries.

The fate of conformal symmetry in the non-linear Schrödinger theory

The free Schroedinger theory in d space dimensions is a non-relativistic conformal field theory. The interacting non-linear theory preserves this symmetry in specific numbers of dimensions at the classical (tree) level. This holds in particular for the Phi^4-theory in d = 2. We compute the full quantum corrections to the 4-point function to show that the symmetry is broken by an anomalous contribution proportional to the exact beta-function

Covariant hamiltonian dynamics

We discuss the covariant formulation of the dynamics of particles with abelian and non-abelian gauge charges in external fields. Using this formulation we develop an algorithm for the construction of constants of motion, which makes use of a generalization of the concept of Killing vectors and tensors in differential geometry. We apply the formalism to the motion of classical charges in abelian and non-abelian monopole fields

Type III Einstein-Yang-Mills solutions

We construct two distinct classes of exact type III solutions of the D=4 Einstein-Yang-Mills system. The solutions are embeddings of the non-abelian plane waves in spacetimes in Kundt's class. Reduction of the solutions to type N leads to generalized $pp$ and Kundt waves. The geodesic equations are briefly discussed.

A note on BRST quantization of SU(2) Yang-Mills mechanics

The quantization of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory reduced to 0+1 space-time dimensions is performed in the BRST framework. We show that in the unitary gauge $A_0 = 0$ the BRST procedure has difficulties which can be solved by introduction of additional singlet ghost variables. In the Lorenz gauge $\dot{A}_0 = 0$ one has additional unphysical degrees of freedom, but the BRST quantization is free of the problems in the unitary gauge.

Conformal Fluid Dynamics

We present a conformal theory of a dissipationless relativistic fluid in 2 space-time dimensions. The theory carries with it a representation of the algebra of 2-$D$ area-preserving diffeomorphisms in the target space of the complex scalar potentials. A complete canonical description is given, and the central charge of the current algebra is calculated. The passage to the quantum theory is discussed in some detail; as a result of operator ordering problems, full quantization at the level of the fields is as yet an open problem.

Relativistic fluid mechanics, Kahler manifolds and supersymmetry

We propose an alternative for the Clebsch decomposition of currents in fluid mechanics, in terms of complex potentials taking values in a Kahler manifold. We reformulate classical relativistic fluid mechanics in terms of these complex potentials and rederive the existence of an infinite set of conserved currents. We perform a canonical analysis to find the explicit form of the algebra of conserved charges. The Kahler-space formulation of the theory has a natural supersymmetric extension in 4-D space-time. It contains a conserved current, but also a number of additional fields complicating the interpretation. Nevertheless, we show that an infinite set of conserved currents emerges in the vacuum sector of the additional fields. This sector can therefore be identified with a regime of supersymmetric fluid mechanics. Explicit expressions for the current and the density are obtained.

Kaehler manifolds and supersymmetry

Supersymmetric field theories of scalars and fermions in 4-D space-time can be cast in the formalism of Kaehler geometry. In these lectures I review Kaehler geometry and its application to the construction and analysis of supersymmetric models on Kaehler coset manifolds. It is shown that anomalies can be eliminated by the introduction of line-bundle representations of the coset symmetry groups. Such anomaly-free models can be gauged consistently and used to construct alternatives to the usual MSSM and supersymmetric GUTs.

Singular supersymmetric sigma models

Supersymmetric non-linear sigma-models are described by a field dependent Kaehler metric determining the kinetic terms. In general it is not guaranteed that this metric is always invertible. Our aim is to investigate the symmetry structure of supersymmetric models in four dimensional space-time in which metric singularities occur. For this purpose we study a simple anomaly-free extension of the supersymmetric CP^1 model from a classical point of view. We show that the metric singularities can be regularized by the addition of a soft supersymmetry-breaking mass parameter.
